    Pros

Company culture stresses valuing others. Most employees care about one another. The environment is not necessarily cut throat. People who leave Colgate sometimes wish they hadn't and try to come back. Some are even let back in.

    Cons

Decision making, from the top down, can be very slow. This is partially due to the fact that C-P is a consensus driven organization, which can stick things in the mud. It feels like we should be moving faster than we do and being too conservative at times.

    Advice to Management

Make decisions faster, be less conservative. Increase focus on innovation. Don't rest on the same old thing.

    Pros

Very stable, often very caring. The benefits are great, and very comprehensive. As a global leader there are many opportunities to gain valuable experiences. If a person wants to work internationally there are lots of opportunities. In fact, promotions at times require that an individual accept moving around and even taking an international assignment.

    Cons

It can be hard to get promoted without political connections. Some folks appear to be fast-tracked and others who work very hard are overlooked. Recognition is seen by some as being inconsistent. The training program is weak. Employee turnover. The efforts to save money can be short sighted. Example: plant shutdowns and other budget restrictions.

    Advice to Management

Corporate and R&D functions should be more in touch with plants.

    Pros

Good compensation. Commercially Minded. Strong respect for others. Financially sound. Good company to stay in long term.

    Cons

Weak marketing competencies. Very limited in creativity. Too many stakeholders in process. No clear innovation process. Not the best place to learn marketing. Very old school in marketing approach. Local subsidiary marketing team too bogged down in operationals due to lack of strong support from peripheral functions (customer marketing, promotions, supply chain, etc)

    Advice to Management

Open up to external resources in teaching marketing basics to young managers. Inspire marketing organization to think outside the usual Colgate way of doing things.

    Pros

Excellent financial track record, very stable. Strong global coverage and focus. Very focused on a few product categories. With a few minor exceptions the company really walks its talk when it comes to values and managing with respect. Excellent opportunities for professional development with a global career. Excellent people and company culture - very open, team based, truly global

    Cons

Culture is quite conservative and consensus based, which at times limits abilities to try new things and limits risk taking. Some opportunities to be more innovative and push the boundaries.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what's working, especially the focus on developing people. Take a few more measured risks, especially with innovation.

Great brand name, stock stability which is important for company 401k,

    Cons

Conservative culture, salary is not on par with other sales jobs I've had

    Advice to Management

The sales organization is slightly disorganized, take pointers from the pharmaceutical industry, they are the best at training their sales folks and devising concrete plans for them

    Pros

Colgate truly understands the work-life balance. This is stressed by senior management and true for all employees. Some departments even include programs to work from home. While there may be exceptions during times of go-lives or product launches, management recognizes that we are a toothpaste company and work should not interrupt family life on a daily basis. The benefits package are fair.

    Cons

Management's understanding of who is really performing the work and providing the greatest value to to company is often misguided. Promotions are far too political and not based upon merit. Competition for retaining employees is a challenge due to local competition. Management only views other consumer goods companies as competition for employees, not recognizing that many skills are easily translated to other industries. Despite this, turnover is still relatively low, since it is a good company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on the employees, for it is the employees who make the firm and are its future. Improve efforts to retain employees, including improved internal training, and merit based promotions.

    Pros

Colgate Palmolive is one of the most multinational companies in the world, and offices exist in many, many different countries. With strong performance, Colgate is a good company to develop an international management career. People that work in the company are generally very nice. Within such a large company, there are always politics but in general, most people including management, are very approachable. The pay and benefits are comparable to most other CPG companies. If you need to raise a family, Kansas is an inexpensive place to do that.

    Cons

Conservative and bureaucratic. Management by consensus is a common practise, making it difficult to implement changes quickly.

    Advice to Management

Allow more decision making in the lower ranks. You've hired strong people to do their jobs - trust their judgement. Speed to market is key and with so much bureaucracy, this important competitive advantage is often lost.
