Sales not a priority

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Commerce Bancshares

ProsGreat sales management group, works toward common goals in sales department

ConsLegal and credit department are main decision makers in a very conservative vein. Sales management support is futile against these other two groups.

ProsFinancial strength of the bank. Above average ROE, ROA, total capitalization, and low loan losses. Flat management structure allows for quicker decisions from a seasoned credit team.

ConsSteady & slow approach to bank and loan portfolio acquisitions has lead to missed opportunities for growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease local lending limit authority.

Long time Commerce Bank Employee

Branch Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Commerce Bancshares full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat company culture. The top people in the company are awesome leaders. Commerce Bank hires some really good people and that is one of the many reasons why they've been successful.

Commerce is also very community oriented.

ConsMiddle management is a bit cut-throat at times. HR is very slow and tends to play favorites.

Cut backs can lead to a very unbalanced work/life balance.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease continue to promote within the company. I've seen outsiders from other institutions damage the culture and standards of the product at several branches.

Dependable corporate employer with solid fiscal presence in the mid-west.

IT Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Commerce Bancshares full-time for more than 5 years

ProsCommerce Bancshares is a very dependable financial services company. In the 2008 economic crisis the IT department only let go 5 of its 500 employees in order to reduce costs while others cut their work force in much greater numbers. The IT management is constantly looking to advance the careers of its own employees by providing leadership programs and opportunities to hire from within. Its quite possible to make horizontal and vertical moves in the company and a degree is not required to take on a leadership role. Because it is a corporate entity the experience you gain working with other teams in IT is quite valuable in the industry and looks positive on most resumes.

ConsMy experience at Commerce is only in IT. Because IT is a sub-organization of the corporation its services are rendered to internal employees which limits your experience to a more narrow range of problems. Additionally, being a stable company requires risk-averse moves causing what sometimes may seem like more than required "red tape". Although technology is an important area of focus for leadership at Commerce it is second to other things so working here would not bring cutting-edge technology to your fingertips readily. Also, the pay grade is mid-range for most positions.

Advice to Senior ManagementAn increase in compensation would assist greatly in employee retention. Emphasizing and requiring front-line leadership to provide training would also increase employee satisfaction.
