I have been working at Commerce Bank full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a great organization to learn and train within the banking industry, then take those skills to other competitors who can appreciate your skills. The bank operates on the same value system it was established on many, many years ago. They operate as a family unit, very tight knit and hard to penetrate the upper echelons.

    Cons

Employees are often pigeon-holed into a certain role, limiting upward mobility. Compensation is far below the competition and the "creative math" the company uses to justify the salaries is comical.

    Pros

Great coworkers. Salary and benefits are competitive with in market. Human resources department offers a lot of opportunities for community involvement.

    Cons

Talk a lot about developing and promoting from within, but reality doesn't support that. In addition, Sr. Retail Management manages by fear and intimidation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retail management manages by fear versus inspiring and supporting employees.

I have been working at Commerce Bank full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere, job stability since the bank is extremely conservative. Free coffee if that can be considered a "pro". Free water too (from the water fountain).

    Cons

Compensation for current employees is poor. Raises are maxed at 2 percent each year. New employees are being paid considerably more for the same roles of those that have been with the company for decades and performing well. Employee insurance is poor as well. Commerce has increased employee contributions, decreased company contributions and reduced benefits. Employee benefit reduction has been a "positive value add" noted in their SEC filings under the MD&A.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit neglecting your internal employees. Given the extreme bump in high-level employee turnover, I would think this may pop up on your radar.

I have been working at Commerce Bank

    Pros

    Good benefit and several locations

    Cons

Wasteful use of money with sales rally and sale brochures instead of decent raises to employees that would help with the increase of the cost of living. Bonuses and salaries of upper management should be frozen or cut because without the workers the goals of the company would not be met. Bank regulations have cut into revenue and customers and employees will pay the price. Customers will be charged for everything the bank can think of and employees raises will either for some no raise and others a very small increase that will hardly make a difference in their take home pay. Upper management gives themselves huge increase in their salary without a care of their employees and their struggle to make ends meet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If they care about their employees and want employees to like working for them, then start showing it. Give employees better raises and stop threatening employees with their job by not shoving bank products down customer throats because the more products sold to customers the more revenue for the bank.

    Pros

Can't take work home with you.

    Cons

Micromanagement by mid level managers. Absolutely no privacy, even to the point of timing of restroom breaks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating bankers as sales people. This should be a service position.

Commerce Bank could be great, but they drop the ball in unethical management and disrespect for entry-level employees.

    Pros

Good job for a college student. Opportunities to move up. Benefits package.

    Cons

competitive pay, but benefits package unattainable on the salary (which made it unusable), unethical managers, insignificant raises, men are paid much more than female employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the retail employees with more respect and appreciation, as they are the first person your customers interact with.
