    Pros

A good company to start a career. Very conservative which allows for a stable job. Heavily involved in the community.

    Cons

Managers do not do a good job at growing their employees to full potential. Not a lot of room for growth unless you are part of the inner-circle. A good company to begin your career with but would need to look elsewhere for higher level positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to get to know your lower level employees.

    Pros

    Good money. Easy job.

    Cons

Part time was 33 hours but 6 days a week every week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Branches should have consistency. None of this 6 day a week part time at one branch and the next one 5 miles over has 2 days off a week for everyone.

    Pros

Security is probably the real key to working at Commerce or, really, any bank. They don't pay a whole lot but they are fairly generous with promotions and titles. Not sure they've ever had a layoff. Very driven by admirable values and a pretty clear mission of customer service.

    Cons

If you have even the tiniest bit of creativity in you they will find a way to kill it. It's bank and they're pretty darn conservative. No way you'll get rich working for them. Benefits are average at best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should look to improving the benefits.

    Pros

The rest reason for working here is the banking and sales experience you gain.

    Cons

The time off policies was a con.

    Pros

Financially stable, well established / long history in the banking business.

    Cons

Compensation plan is too complicated. The penalty aspect built into the plan is de-motivating.

Not sure they can catch up to the competitors in the solutions marketplace

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lagging behind in the application of technology in the marketplace. Get rid of the complicated comp plan - show you really value your employees in deed not just words.

    Pros

Great Developing Teller Excellence class. Work with charities, raising money. If you like badgering customers with selling products and services they don't want, this job is for you.

    Cons

Inconsistencies in running branches. Greeting customers by name is seldom done and even though it is mandatory, it is seldom enforced. Pay raises are small to none, unless you are upper management who receives bonuses and huge raises. Mandatory teller referral goals, that if not met you will receive warnings and termination, which causes tellers to cheat in reporting referrals. Staffing is a joke. Seen plenty of times 3-4 customers standing in line with only one teller window open. Managers see the long customer lines, but ignore the situation. Teller training downtown is adequate, but there are a lot of areas of banking that are not taught. Many tellers have expressed they received better training at their branch than in the teller training program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enforce the policies in the employee handbook. Seldom hear customers greeted by name. Cell phones that are not suppose to be out on the workstation are allowed. Even with a customer standing at the teller window, tellers will check their cellphones. Give staff better wages, instead of worrying about shareholder's profit. Why should employees perform well when they feel the company does not appreciate the job they are doing? Mandatory teller referrals that causes tellers to cheat, by entering referrals into the system they did not make, in order not to lose their job. Customers who have expressed constantly they are annoyed by employees trying to sell them product and services they do not want. Customers have even threatened to close their accounts because they are tired of the selling. Staff the branches so customers are not waiting so long to be helped.
