Some benefits but a lot of bureaucracy and hypocrisy

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTelework opportunities are the best part for me. Without that, I'd probably really be struggling to stay positive.

ConsMany buildings/floors are terrible. Cubicle walls and furniture are falling apart and from the '60's and '70's. Everything is really slow - lots of bureaucracy and lack of action. Lots of "studies" done that don't seem to go anywhere. For many agencies. there is no $ for training, development, mileage reimbursement, equipment,..... No pay increases over the past ~7 years (except for 1 year). Disappointing considering many of the appointed political positions get multiple pay increases over their 4 year terms.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the Administration: don't tell employees that things are dire and $ needs to be saved when you provide significant pay increases for your appointees. Doesn't build trust or respect.

    Definitely different than private sector

    Health Educator (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsLeave policy is generous, so for those with small children the ability to be present for school activities is good. Not going to work weekends (office clears out after 8 hours) definitely very structured. There are not a lot of questions when it comes to policies; every conceivable iteration has been planned for.

ConsPay is terrible. No scheduled increases.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow for more free-thought.

    Great benefits!

    Environmental Specialist (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsBenefits, time, flexibility, predictability. Good for specialization in certain environmental focuses.

ConsPay, work interest/variety, often not-engaged colleagues, few if any financial or similar perks. Minimal inter-disciplinary opportunities without changing job.

    I worked for the VADOC

    Corrections Officer (Current Employee)
    Dillwyn, VA

ProsThe staff can make this an enjoyable working experience. Training is among the best.

ConsThe pay isn't the best or anywhere near the best. Some of the older employees need to retire along with their way of thinking. It is a true dichotomy there.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's time to retire some of the wardens and superintendents.

An opportunity to serve communities across the state

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsThe ability to make a difference in the lives of many individuals and their families in communities across the state.

ConsPolitical influences can sometimes hamper your ability to get work done, and governor's initiatives can end up pulling your agency resources.

    State Manager

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

ProsEmployees and management have a strong sense of public service and want to do the right thing. This is a great place to work if you want to make a real difference.

ConsWhile there are methods to discipline under performing employees, there are too few methods to promote and recognize strong employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn the state human resources rules and learn how to deal with difficult employees. Too many managers are afraid of long-term, entrenched employees and don't know how to deal with them properly.
