Highly Political and Self Important Working Environment Stuck in the Past

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFor the most part, the atmosphere is one of low expectations. It's very difficult to feel like you are underachieving. Pay is decent.

ConsEverything about this company is traditionalist. There is no sense of new ideas. Creativity is undervalued. Little to no young professionals with fresh ideas. Management is highly politicized and unwilling to compromise.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit the nepotism and shake up the management structure. Allow those with new ideas the chance to make them work. Stop hiring and retaining poor, complacent talent.

    PROFITS BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsScratch cooking, No Late nights & Holidays were shared and early.

ConsHard working Under-paid Skelton crew, Old equipment in disrepair. Unskilled or under-skilled managers. Constant threats of firing if over budget on labor or food costs. Bottom line came above Seniors we served. If you tried to speak to corporate it's a run around. Getting anything approved is a nightmare. All that matter was getting apartments filled all else is second at best.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember service first. If you provide quality food and housing it will speak for itself. That will be the best marketing campaign you could very pay for. Visit and work. Yeah work with those who are in daily contact with the seniors who PAY your salaries. Looking at the bottom line of a P&L will never tell you anything about the future profitability. Actually, going into the trenches will. A general cannot lead form the comfort of his office.
Corporate is always to busy or too lazy to figure out the problem. It's a get them in and get them paying. It's unfortunate that seniors pay all this money and corporate seems to think as long as the checks come in; they're doing their jobs.

    Nepotism at its finest

    Sales (Former Employee)

ProsStrong portfolio of services. Market leader and well known name. Strong training program for sales executives. Nice benefit package. Profit motivated which leads to creative ways to make deals work.

ConsVery political. Not open to new ideas or perspective. The "Compass Way" is the only way. On the sales commission side, the rules for getting paid changed throughout the year. You never were completely sure of how much, when or if you would get paid.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen up to other processes, techniques or styles. You may learn something.

I had an ok time working for terrible managers.

Food Server (Former Employee) Chattanooga, TN

ProsThere was decent pay and enough hours to keep me happy. I would have preferred a better experience, but it was alright.

ConsSome of the managers were great, but there were also some who just didn't know how to handle employees. They berated and harassed employees who didn't do what they were supposed to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire better managers.

    Low pay, oblivious management

    Dishwasher (Current Employee) Galesburg, IL

ProsSome high quality people work here. They take their jobs seriously and for the most part get along with one another. The sniping/gossiping problem is relatively mild.

ConsOffice management is oblivious to the staff. My last year's employee evaluation was almost 3 months late with no explanation. I was highly rated, but then management reneged on my raise, cutting it by two/thirds. Equipment breaks down and stays busted sometimes for weeks(this is partly a hospital management i.e non-Compass failing). Management has cut expenses to the bone and got rewarded for doing so. My hours have been cut twice in three years. My employee evaluation for this year is already a month late, again with no explanation. Some office people don't even want to talk to kitchen employees. Management thinks they can cure all problems with slogans and rah-rah pep talks. And we have more company meetings than Dilbert.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire people who have some people skills. Read W. Edwards Demings' book "Out of the Crisis".

Look for career opportunities beyond Canteen Vending

Customer Service Manager (Former Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsIf you would just like a Monday thru Friday job. The guys who work on the vending trucks have a lot of independence but they must follow their route.

ConsVery poor work atmosphere. It was managment vs. labor all the time. Distrust throughout the branch. As a customer service manager coming from outside a union environment it was very hard to encourage the route drivers that the company really had their best interest in mind. I constantly heard that management didn't care so they were not going to care. As I checked the work of the route drivers I saw this was true of most of them. They filled vending machines not following guidelines and often just skipped machines altogether.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to improve relations with labor so that the union can be voted out.

    Poor managment

Cleaner (Current Employee) Haverfordwest, Wales (UK)

ProsGood supervisor. Fun crew to work with all 3 of them

ConsLow pay, no pay rise now since 2010, wanting too much to be done in the time limit given normal clean is two hours but yet if done right would take 2 hours 30 mins. Not enough hours so run on skeleton crew so if some one is sick or on holiday no one to cover them since been there they have cut 100 hours a month just for pure profit for who could I guess

Advice to Senior ManagementUp the hours, if you say your coming down come down, put uniform on different budget instead of cleaning budget ( part of icm compass group) produce ids for the staff.

One big lie. They trick you into thinking you are secure in your role when really they are holding a knife at your back.

Sales Assistant (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsThe co workers, definitely not including management, you meet some of the most amazing and hardworking people and certainly build great friendships. We're a real team and that is something I'll miss when I quit.

ConsManagement will do anything to cover their backs! They will lie, commit fraud, you name it and odds are they've probably done it.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive your employees some trust, rather than expecting us to blindly follow and throw ourselves in front of a knife (job loss) for you.
