    Pros

This company is a great place with tons of resources and alot of opportunities... Many employees know that they are set for life once they get hired.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the company hires alot of contractors and escapes paying their contractors their sick or mandated government holidays... This is just another way to circumvent paying benefits...

    Advice to Management

Too many bosses with useless titles who are in charge of things they don't have the experience to know about.

    Pros

Chain of command works well. Easy to talk to anyone in the company about any issues. Everyone is friendly.

    Cons

As an intern there is not a lot of time I spend within the plant. Not too much work to come across my desk.

    Pros

It is a large and one of the most renowned electric utilities in America. There is a lot of flexibility if one wants to gain experience at different departments.

    Cons

The company is sometimes too large that it is difficult to get in touch with a person since there are too many intermediaries.

    Advice to Management

It would be much better if upper level management contacted relevant departments before making major changes that would affect a lot of departments.

    Pros

Con Ed is a good place to work. They generally take care of their employees and are loyal. Lots of opportunity to move around within the company, however being promoted to a manager level is very political (and unfortunately it seems many managers are hired based on their skin-tone and/or gender - not qualifications). Decent pay with some OT opportunities, decent benefits, great stock purchase program. They have started to come around with work-life balance and flexible work arrangements, however some managers/departments still believe you HAVE to be at your desk to get work done. Very stable - you can work here for your entire career - if you can stay awake.

    Cons

Typical big company bureaucracy. Work is procedure driven, which disallows thinking outside of the box. Very quick to finger-point and pass along blame - CYA culture. Work can be very slow paced and boring at times. There's an abundance of employees - 5 people to do 1 person's job. Years ago there were people stealing from company/taking kick-backs, so countless accounting measures have been implemented in an attempt to prevent these occurrences and make getting project funds/change orders incredibly difficult.

    Advice to Management

Re-think your "total rewards" compensation program. Several years ago Con Ed bench-marked to make sure benefits were "in-line with industry" which lead to cuts in benefits and increases in contributions. Benefit contributions are static across all job levels so VP's are contributing just as much to health insurance as the entry level employees. It's OK to be better than the rest of the industry.
