    Pros

Great culture, lots of perks. Nice gyms, great benefits. Very good starting salary, but the bonuses are not the best in the industry.

    Cons

In the recent downturn, they layed a lot of people off only to hire back just as many because they didn't want to go back on their offers. It doesn't make you feel particularly valued or safe for the next round of lay-offs. Lots of management. Even though they are the "Largest" independent, they still operate like a Major. Though they do seem to realize this and are working towards being more like an independent.

    Pros

COP has great values and supports safe operations. Good heritage company and heritage assets. Has good people that for the most part want to do the right thing.

    Cons

They are currently confused on how to act like an independent in downturn. They still don't treat people as their best resource, seem to value shareholders and execs much more than anything else. Good in good times, but in downturns layoff big.

    Advice to Management

Value people as your best asset. Act like an independent as that is what you are now.

    Pros

Great people and a pretty good overall environment

    Cons

Tend toward bureaucracy and an over abundance of political correctness

    Advice to Management

The new price environment is a good chance to make shifts in our culture and shed some of the bulk. The only way to really achieve this is to make real changes to our processes.

    Pros

-Good salary/benefits. Good peer group, reasonable medical insurance.

    Cons

Horrid middle management. Field personnel are some of the most uneducated in the industry.

    Advice to Management

Continue to see the long term with oil and gas. if you get rid of too many people there will be no one left when oil comes back.

    Pros

Reasonable chance to advance your career, good management, company split in 2012 with a focus on exploration & production spawned a more agile environment.

    Cons

Compared to other companies in the E&P sector, ConocoPhillips really is best of breed. Recent environment in crude oil price has meant layoffs and probably no hiring for a while.

    Advice to Management

    Continue doing a good job.

    Pros

Good base pay, opportunity to bonus very well, really impressive 401k company contribution and a pension plan.

    Cons

Too much focus on goals and selling yourself/accomplishments to management vs. recognition for actual/behind the scenes work. Poorly executed 'development' moves....they to how amazing their training is, but it's really more of a thrown into the deep end approach. Training is too high-level.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on employees' day to day contributions than on the BS they can muster for their performance reviews.

    Pros

Excellent company with strong senior management, a desire to succeed, and a very good value-driven employee culture.

    Cons

During the recent oil sector downturn, ConocoPhillips elected to maintain its dividend and Wall Street relationships at the expense of several hundred employees who were laid off.

    Pros

As a technical writer and editor, I found that most of the scientists I worked with appreciated the contributions I made to the quality of their papers, online help, reports, and other materials.

    Cons

Like most companies, COP upper management believes technical writers are a "luxury," rather than a necessity.

    Advice to Management

Compare the written work of your scientists "final" documents to the same documents after they were edited by a professional writer. You will see a stark difference in the clarity and effectiveness of their documents.
