I have been working at Consolidated Graphics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Due to the cutbacks in staffing and the resulting increase in job responsibilities, each employee is typically given additional responsibilities well above and beyond their original job description. So, while you won't be paid more for your additional duties, you will gain experience in a large number of print-related roles that prepare you for a position elsewhere.

    Free coffee. Always a plus.

    Cons

The LDP Associate program, lauded as one of the company's strengths, is in actuality one of its biggest weaknesses. This program takes recent college graduates, who typically do not even have a long-term interest in the print industry, and places them into roles that they are not trained or ready for. Many of the LDPs wash out once they work at CGX for a year or so. Some stay on, and are promoted to positions they are absolutely not ready for, to the great detriment to the individual operating companies and to CGX as a whole. When you combine this with the targeted termination of highly-paid printing experts, experienced managers and trade craftsmen that used to make up the companies that CGX cannibalized, you get a recipe for exceptionally weak/clueless management without any hope for internal promotion of more qualified individuals.

The IT group, TSSG, is particularly staffed with "warm bodies" that have no business remaining in an IT role. There are some diamonds in the rough that carry the rest of the TSSG division.

No tuition reimbursement or continuing education programs.

As a general rule, pay for CGX employees is lower than industry average, there are no in-house promotions for the "non-LDP" workers, and office culture is somewhat demoralizing and frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The outgoing CEO had a great plan for himself, he cut the individual 70+ operating companies that made up CGX to the bone, and traded off of their once-respected brands until the termination of experienced staff and lack of equipment upgrades caught up with each individual operating company. He and the board sold to RR Donnelley for what he could get when it became apparent that the CGX business model was about to collapse under its own weight.

Currently Consolidated Graphics has been purchased by RR Donnelley, and 3 months into the merger there does not seem to be any change on the horizon (Positive or negative)

Advice to the management of RR Donnelley? The CGX employees don't even know who their RR Donnelley managers are. I trust that the management of RR Donnelley will do a better job than the management of Consolidated Graphics, it would be difficult to do worse.

Decent company for some career opportunities in printing but just do not show that they care about their employees

I have been working at Consolidated Graphics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Variety of companies, expertise in industry, footprint across the country, local companies operate somewhat independently in their given market, national resources available for national program work

    Cons

Various companies are very fragmented, lack of care for employees (most evident by terrible insurance benfits and non-matching 401K), high turnover rate corporate-wide, corporate communication is very poor

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Turn over is very high and it's due to the fact that retaining valuable employees and advancing well-performing employees is a low priority to corporate.

I worked at Consolidated Graphics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Many of the employees here are great people. It amazed me how a company with such a bad tone at the top could have such great people working under it.

    Cons

The main problems I had while working at CGX could be gathered into: (1) Execs and upper management do not care the slightest bit about employee retention. The CEO believes high turnover is good for a company. The result? You are not valued (and they don't even try to pretend to make you feel like you are). (2) The lack of benefits. Literally any other company you go to will have a better health insurance plan at a cheaper price. I paid $250 a month (employee only) for their cheapest insurance option. They do not offer 401k matching. Salaries are not competitive with the market. If you are looking for a company that cares about its employees, look elsewhere. If you are unemployed and are desperate for a job, work at CGX until you find something better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase employee morale with benefits and programs showing the company cares about its employees. Pay your employees more. At least put the employees whose pay you cut 5 years ago back to their starting point. Offer 401k matching. At least offer better health insurance coverage if the costs are going to be so high.

I worked at Consolidated Graphics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It is a Job. And it is close to several good restaurants.

    Cons

Pay is low for the amount of work expected (after-hours and weekend work without pay).
    Expensive Health benefits.
The different groups do not work well together (Developer vs Project Management).
Some managers do not have any managerial skills (programmer promotion to Manager).
Too much turn over - people leaving every week (some people have left after only a few months there).
Never park in the bottom of the garage, because it floods.
And do not go to HR about any issues, they will let you go...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some people as manager that actually have a Management degree.
The lack of an actual Sick Day policy in the employee handbook make life confusing.

I have been working at Consolidated Graphics full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

If you are a graduate straight out of college, this is a great starter company and a good way to pad your resume.

    Cons

There are no raises, only steady pay and/or eventual pay cuts. CGX does the bare minimum possible for their long term employees. While I am fully aware of the economic situation, CGX does nothing to provide real, motivating incentive to be loyal to their company. In my experience, people only work for CGX companies because they have to due to the economy, not because they necessarily enjoy what they do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your on the ground employees, they are your biggest asset.

I have been working at Consolidated Graphics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As part of the Leadership Development Program, you are able to learn a lot in a short period of time and work in different parts of the company (customer service, estimating, accounting, etc.) to garner more experience than most recent college grads.

    Cons

The Leadership Development Program boasts that you could become a company president one day, but they give you no visibility of how to get there.

They expect you to work to the bone and "pay your dues" for little or no respect.

They view everyone as "replaceable", and they aren't afraid to tell that to your face.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fairly compensate your employees and show that you value them.
