Current Employee - Associate Software Engineer in New York, NY

I have been working at Constant Contact full-time for less than a year

    Pros

High entry level salary for software engineers, awesome work/life balance, tons of opportunities to learn with in-house events during work hours (eg. Ruby lunch, sponsored trips to conferences), wonderful coworkers and great benefits.

    Cons

Because the company is larger, it can take a while to feel up to speed with all of the operations. New hire training does a good job trying to prepare you for this, but really it just takes some time to get accustomed to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to focus on growing a really attractive product, not just as a means of attracting new customers but to attract new talent to the company.

I have been working at Constant Contact full-time

    Pros

The mission of working for small businesses keeps management humble, and focused on the right targets. I've also never seen a company so willing to share information at all levels of management, and maintain constant transparency, which improves morale and helps employees maintain a sense of purpose. The emphasis on work/life balance is immense, and work hard, play hard mentality drives the success of every department!

    Cons

No cons yet! Just need to keep up the hard work to scale up to the number of customers, to maintain the same spirit that makes Constant Contact!

I have been working at Constant Contact as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

The company culture is great. The things you hear during the interview process about the culture have proven accurate - work hard/play hard, employees don't take themselves too seriously, flip flops are just fine work shoes, beer carts on Fridays, and if you have ideas, take them to your manager and at best you'll be given the green light and at worst they'll tell you that they appreciate your feedback and to keep it coming but they're going to go in a different direction. Flexible with schedules (start early/end early is just fine, although some start later and work later, which is fine too) and eager to get you settled and feeling comfortable. People seem to really enjoy their work, who they work with, and who they work for (small businesses). Super smart people. Approachable upper management. Stand up and treadmill desks available, which is awesome.

    Cons

My commute is awful, but not much to be done about that because I don't plan to move.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep coming out of your offices and making yourselves available to employees, it's good for morale!

    Pros

The people and the customers. Hands down. They hire smart people that you learn from, that can challenge you and that you'd like to have a beer with (or soda). Executive leadership works hard to keep the culture a work hard play hard environment.

    Cons

None really. They had some growing pains for a while, but knew it and focused on working them, they listen to employees and work to find a solution.

I have been working at Constant Contact as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    - Interesting Work
    - Knowledgeable People
    - Friendly Environment
    - Competitive Pay
    - Fun, Social Activities
    - Quality Intern Program
    - Relatively Transparent Management in regards to strategy for a company of its size

Constant Contact offers a great internship program. I was very lucky to have secured a position over the summer in my area of interest. I landed on a great team working on an interesting project, from which I learned a lot about being effective in the software world. The company has a good name, and that has opened doors for me in finding a full-time job. While I wish I could have stayed on-board as a permanent employee, I'm still happy nonetheless for the opportunity I had at a great company. I felt appreciated as an intern. I was being assigned meaningful work. And the pay was good, as well as the frequent free food and beer cart Fridays. HR went to great lengths to make our time at CTCT enjoyable. We had lunch sessions with the senior executives, including Gail, the CEO. We were treated to a Red Sox game. And a few other freebies. Considering that we were all getting paid to learn and grow in our respective fields, the attention and care we received was very generous.

    Cons

    - Product Suite not as cutting edge as some of our competitors
    - Size: Organization sometimes felt comprised of silos
    - Slow to Implement Change (So much buy-in and negotiation required)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Implement Innovation Faster
    - Look to the future, try not to be trapped by the legacy
    - Cultivate more cross-functional interaction among all employees, not just middle and upper and management
