Financially Strong Company, Good people but HR support is severely lacking

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Auburn Hills, MI

I have been working at Continental AG full-time for more than 5 years

ProsSuccessful company, very international, good opportunities (if your boss supports you), very skilled people, good compensation.

ConsVery centralized, little cooperation between departments, No HR support (little training, no career follow up, poor recruiting, HR is completely disconnected), Company is struggling to define a culture. It is good work there as a start but you might quickly find the limits.

Advice to Senior ManagementPeople are your main resources, re-think the way you manage them and do it fast. There are many very successful companies famous for the way they manage HR. Take their example and make some major changes.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

okay place to start

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Continental AG full-time

ProsLaid back place to work for the most part and the pay is average for what you do. Free ice and coffee in the break areas.

ConsToo many managers. Need more recognition and incentive to some of its dedicated employees. Rotating shift schedule for production workers.

Its a simple work place to get involved into but nothing much beyond that.

Line Operator (Current Employee)
Seguin, TX

I have been working at Continental AG full-time for less than a year

ProsThe pros are that you its a simple job if your a line operator like I am, easy to get into and maintain. Bosses are way more lenient than what they make you believe at first. Relaxed work place.

ConsThe communication between the work force and management is lacking. Sometimes both have completely different expectations and often leads to very frustrating moments and interactions. Management does a poor job of keeping its workers motivated.

Advice to Senior ManagementI cant speak for the whole company as a whole but so far the plant in seguin has proved to be mediocre. Good enough to get the job done but so far away from the potential it has. It's sad that workers are only there because it pays the bills rather than to have a great time working for an international company. Upper management is awesome but lower and middle management is really lacking. The models for meeting production are there already. Start focusing on lower and middle management to be more of leaders and less of bosses. They are great at making things sound pretty and intelligent but lack the leadership skills to connect and set a waypoint for its workers. Besides throwing orders around they are really never there to build up their team or enhance the experience. Its almost as if they hated their jobs as much as the workers did! As for the production capabilities, a lot of line production workers don't care much for the company only doing the bare minimum. Thus reflecting on the lacking ability of its leaders to motivate them. Maybe better leaders would push away those type of workers and attract the right type? And i don't mean make them more up tight and meaner. Some already use intimidation with their rank as a method which is pretty sad. But besides from all that, the business model itself is fantastic. Congrats! Your business will keep growing, thats for sure. Just wonder how long it will be able to sustain itself with the people you got working for you.

ConsSlow automotive pace, no stock options

Fantastic learning experience! But burned out from managment mis-management

Senior Hardware Engineer (Former Employee)
Auburn Hills, MI

I worked at Continental AG full-time for more than a year

ProsLarge company, good resources, diverse jobs, diverse people, interesting projects.

ConsGeneral Cons: Pay below median, benefits sub-par, Germany reigns, Germany gets the interesting work. Specific Cons: Depends on your department, could be none. In mine, and some others I knew, very over-worked. These guys will not hire appropriate staff. Also, the Motorola, Huntville, Siemens merger resulted in a "Brady Bunch" style clash of personalities, cultures, and organizations that is not being managed well.

Advice to Senior ManagementHard to say, they have, almost, a "Mission Impossible" or, at least, indredibly difficult. They need to A. Have the strenght to say "No" (will not deliver) to Germany and to customers and B. Address inter-personnel cultural, career goal, and interactive issues, not ignor C. Deliver with quality or else, do not deliver.

Don't push too hard

Associate Software Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Continental AG full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLaid back working environment with little overtime or weekend work required, good pay and benefits. More aimed at people looking to spend a lot of their career in one place than climb the ladder. They did do a good job of staying slim during the recession and are generally thoughtful of their employees.

ConsSmall possibility for advancement on the technical side. They say they have a technical ladder but there are very few positions on it.
Not proactive about R&D, only build based on requests.
Subservient to German HQ, antiquated processes and software.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's hard to change corporate culture especially after acquisitions of Motorola and Siemens divisions, but prototyping technologies that OEMs may be interested in for tomorrow will help Continental compete instead of waiting for business to come.

Great benefits when I started - loosing more each year

Engineer (Current Employee)
Fletcher, NC

I have been working at Continental AG full-time for more than 10 years

ProsBenefits are still better than most companies in this area.
Pay is at the higher end of the scale for the area.
New management is trying to turn the company around

ConsForeign managment doesn't understand American culture and are unwilling to accept it.
Departments that need help don't seem to get it. Other departments are having to find work for all the people they are hiring.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more Manufacturing Engineers so they don't have to stay in the plant 60+ hours a week - with out overtime. These people have families and childern that they are missing growing up.

I have been working at Continental AG full-time for more than a year

ProsJobs/Benefits, Nice Location, the workers care

ConsSame Old Problems Reoccur. Not much gets fixed. Daily Fire Fights. Lots of Change.
