Good learning opportunity, some advancement possibilities

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at CorVel full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe company does promote from within and changing from one team to another is possible if the option is given. My immediate manager has an excellent leadership style, promoting both personal and professional development. Our team works well together, with cross-training going on at all levels. There is a good atmosphere for inter-team cooperation. Most of the people in my office are friendly. Every day is a challenge; I am learning almost constantly.

ConsThe benefits are not consistent with other companies, especially the 401(k) and healthcare options. Quick turn-around on projects are frequently required, making the pace frenetic and somewhat stressful at times. There are multiple naming conventions across the company, making it difficult to communicate exactly what is needed or expected. Environments are always being updated and revised so it's difficult to keep accurate documentation.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease provide better benefit options for your employees. Also, more team-building exercises across teams would be beneficial.

Lots of Questions, Very Few Answers

Credentialing Specialist (Former Employee)
Portland, OR

I worked at CorVel full-time for more than a year

ProsHealthcare and Workers Compensation is a growing field and it was nice to be a part of it. It was actually fairly easy to communicate with people in the different CorVel offices and stay up-to-date on company news.

ConsIt was always very difficult to get definitive answers from the higher ups. We would ask, "do you want a, b or c?" They would respond, after a few days, "yes." This isn't anything unique to CorVel, but it does happen often.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great recognition doesn't translate into career path

Senior Analyst Programmer (Former Employee)
Portland, OR

I worked at CorVel full-time for more than 5 years

ProsIf you have good manager, you get recognized for your work. Management is willing to bet on latest technology.

ConsRecognition doesn't translate into career success. Pretty much no career path. You get promoted if you're in the right place at the right time. 100% agree with Anonymous Programmer Analyst from Portland.

You can be in the same position even after years. Not-so-bad annual raise keeps pushing pay up. After many years, one finds hard to move on to other jobs because, for the same position one can't get as much pay outside. So, only option is to look for a job higher in career path which becomes difficult after being in same position for too long.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook for opportunities to fill higher posts from internal. This will provide opportunities for rank & file to move up the ladder.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at CorVel

ProsProfessional work place, Flexible schedule, competitive salary, telecommute option, reasonable project deadlines makes it desirable company to work. Very stable company.

ConsIn software development no proper career improvement path. Health care benefits are basic, 401k benefits are minimal makes Corvel less attractive.

Advice to Senior ManagementEstablishing proper career development path, create 360 degree review, improve HR department it feels like no HR department. These changes will make CorVel great company to work.

Solid company with good opportunity for advancement

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at CorVel full-time

ProsCorVel is focused on technology, innovative, entrepreneurial initiative, with results, is rewarded. The company is financially very strong and growing. CorVel has a track record of attracting and retaining top talent.

ConsThe business that CorVel is engaged in is extremely competitive. Most departments run extremely lean, the pace is fast. Some personalities thrive in such an environment, some do not.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter communication, top down. Define career paths for employees. CorVel has great talent, there should be better processes for 'listening' to employee feedback.
