    Pros

Company has great people, incredibly loyal and smart. Still sells great brands - Word Perfect, WinZip, Roxio, PaintShop Pro, Pinnacle Studio. Marketing is challenging with PC and Mac software sales declining...but working on the Corel team has been a great experience in integration and co-marketing. Decent benefits, and flex hours too!

    Cons

Tough situation to have to cut every year despite hitting sales targets and goals within the company. Communication is lacking due to it being a private company and each division was unaware really, of what the other was doing. Staying focused and motivated was challenging so it really came down to the people you were working with which made it ok.

    Advice to Management

Communicate. Realize people are more than just money makers - make decisions that benefit all aspects of a company in addition to the bottomline.

    Pros

Flexible work environment where the results are the most important thing and not when you do it. I often telecommuted. Note: this was in the US and I do not think that other locations have as much flexibility. The pay was very competitive and benefits ok.

    Cons

Corel is HQ in Canada with offices in Taiwan, US, and China. They have had many layoffs and have moved most development to Taiwan and China. They laid-off a very experienced team in the US and moved the development to a smaller team in Taiwan with less experience and little knowledge of the code base.

    Advice to Management

Not all engineers are equal. A person with extensive knowledge in the product space can not be replaced with another just because they cost less.

  3. Good place for learning technology but too hard working

    Pros

Good place for learning technology. A bunch of good engineers there to work with. All are hardworking and prefessional

    Cons

Managers try to make you work over time most of the time. Don't have much chance to grow up management-wise.

    Advice to Management

The management should give employees opportunity to give feedback. More resource is moving to Taiwan so people start worrying on that

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Some interesting work, good technology, friendly and talented coworkers, reasonable benefits,

    Cons

Limited opportunities for the future, work is not divided well between overseas offices, projects get moved to other groups with little notice, upper management only wants to make "safe" choices, leadership vacuum leads to lack of coordination among managers, upper management is too dependent on middle managers to know what is going on.

    Advice to Management

Keep non-manager employees more in the loop about what's going on, talking with each person to hear what they are doing. Also, allow people to take ownership of their work -- it's difficult to be motivated to make a long term investment in your project (work hard or be creative) knowing that your project may be taken away from you at any moment.

If you are a grunt level employee, don't bother, but if you are middle-high management, this place is for you.

    Pros

The roles are always evolving with market trend and market technology in the software multimedia space and Corel is the market leader in this particular market in many ways. Never boring and always learning (unless again, grunt level)

    Cons

Very very top heavy for a small-medium sized company.

    Advice to Management

Consolidate each senior managements direction into one and negotiate with the holding interest in the back to make sure the goals are aligned. Too many directions and too many opinions leads to competitor stealing business away.

    Pros

Very good professionals, relaxed working environment, flexible hours, good work-life balance in the sense that the work can be done anytime as long as it gets done. However the workload was heavy.
    Great products to work on.
    Good, efficient processes in place.
People used to collaborating a lot.
    Great location and building.

    Cons

    Constant insecure feeling.
    Highly political.
Some leaders are not very good at communication and collaboration.
Seems to be a preference for male employees.
    No room to grow.
Little money for training or career advancement, however you learn a lot on the job.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your people and the passion and effort they put into their work.

    Pros

Great company to get started in the industry
    Fun products and projects
    Great coworkers
Flexible hours. I can pretty much come in and out as I'd like, as long as I do my work and attend meetings.
Flexibility to work from home occasionally
Good ownership of your own work and freedom to explore other areas

    Cons

    Lots of politics
Little room for career development as very rarely new openings are posted (internal or external)
Low pay, practically no pay increases ever
Little investment in innovation, most of the products are just trying to catch up to the industry
Big disconnect between executive team and front line, lots of resentment towards executive team
Layoffs constantly which impacts overall morale and fear for job security

    Pros

Atmosphere is relaxed and results-focussed. Managers are generally friendly. Lots of fun people. There isn't a lot of middle management with nothing to do but supervise people, so you're treated like an adult and left alone to do your job.

    Cons

The company is currently being stripped for parts due to tough market conditions. Saw so many good people get let go over the years. Half the product portfolio now managed out of Austin so probably more job losses coming to Ottawa. It can be a good place to work and I know people who've had good career's there, but the threat of restructuring and layoffs is always around no matter how you perform.

    Advice to Management

I think they have their hands full trying to keep the place above water.

    Pros

Very talented and open minded front line people to work with, lots to learn from them.
    Advanced and efficient processes.
Very good products with passionate users.
Flexibility in work hours as long as work gets done.

    Cons

Some of the high level management has not proven strong leadership skills.
People are often laid off on political reasons, overlooking the performance and importance of their role in the company. It can happen to anybody.
Stressful environment to work in due to multiple layoffs, lack of trust in management and strategy and job uncertainty.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the company growth, product quality and the employees.

    Pros

People are friendly and the hours are flexible. Some managers let you work from home once or twice a week.

    Cons

Company is short sighted. The focus is always on revenue for THAT quarter. Lack of employee development along with annual layoffs make it a difficult place to succeed.

    Advice to Management

Please consider investing in your employees and keep salaries in line with inflation.
