Corel is going down the drain.

    Principal Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Eden Prairie, MN

ProsFlexible work environment where the results are the most important thing and not when you do it. I often telecommuted. Note: this was in the US and I do not think that other locations have as much flexibility. The pay was very competitive and benefits ok.

ConsCorel is HQ in Canada with offices in Taiwan, US, and China. They have had many layoffs and have moved most development to Taiwan and China. They laid-off a very experienced team in the US and moved the development to a smaller team in Taiwan with less experience and little knowledge of the code base.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot all engineers are equal. A person with extensive knowledge in the product space can not be replaced with another just because they cost less.

Good place for learning technology but too hard working

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsGood place for learning technology. A bunch of good engineers there to work with. All are hardworking and prefessional

ConsManagers try to make you work over time most of the time. Don't have much chance to grow up management-wise.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management should give employees opportunity to give feedback. More resource is moving to Taiwan so people start worrying on that

can be worse, but could be much better.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsSome interesting work, good technology, friendly and talented coworkers, reasonable benefits,

ConsLimited opportunities for the future, work is not divided well between overseas offices, projects get moved to other groups with little notice, upper management only wants to make "safe" choices, leadership vacuum leads to lack of coordination among managers, upper management is too dependent on middle managers to know what is going on.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep non-manager employees more in the loop about what's going on, talking with each person to hear what they are doing. Also, allow people to take ownership of their work -- it's difficult to be motivated to make a long term investment in your project (work hard or be creative) knowing that your project may be taken away from you at any moment.

If you are a grunt level employee, don't bother, but if you are middle-high management, this place is for you.

Part of Grunt Level Manager (Current Employee)
    Mountain View, CA

ProsThe roles are always evolving with market trend and market technology in the software multimedia space and Corel is the market leader in this particular market in many ways. Never boring and always learning (unless again, grunt level)

ConsVery very top heavy for a small-medium sized company.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsolidate each senior managements direction into one and negotiate with the holding interest in the back to make sure the goals are aligned. Too many directions and too many opinions leads to competitor stealing business away.

I grew in my profession working at Corel

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsVery talented and open minded front line people to work with, lots to learn from them.
    Advanced and efficient processes.
Very good products with passionate users.
Flexibility in work hours as long as work gets done.

ConsSome of the high level management has not proven strong leadership skills.
People are often laid off on political reasons, overlooking the performance and importance of their role in the company. It can happen to anybody.
Stressful environment to work in due to multiple layoffs, lack of trust in management and strategy and job uncertainty.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on the company growth, product quality and the employees.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Disappointing because it could be so much more.

    Senior Web Producer (Current Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsPeople are friendly and the hours are flexible. Some managers let you work from home once or twice a week.

ConsCompany is short sighted. The focus is always on revenue for THAT quarter. Lack of employee development along with annual layoffs make it a difficult place to succeed.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease consider investing in your employees and keep salaries in line with inflation.

    People are great but . . .

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsThe best part of this company is the employees. A relaxed but professional environment combined with friendly staff makes going to work enjoyable. People, including middle management, are working hard, and everyone is treated with respect.

ConsThe worst thing about Corel is the VC ownership cloud hanging over it. The staff never knows when the next re-org is coming, so that ownership can take a little more money out of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have a tough road ahead. Take the pulse of the worker bees more often. Keep being honest.

Good place to learn about business operations

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Taipei (Taiwan)

ProsIt demonstrates how a M&A based company runs a business.

ConsIt ignore core technology development. The organization changes frequently.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood luck to you.

Prosgreat culture and work/life balance. Good pay for a small consumer package company.

ConsVenture Capitalism driven - cash out as much as possible. No growth plan or long term strategy. Very low innovation and R&D investments. Cost reduction mode is on for a while....

    Good place

    User Experience (Former Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsIt was a co-op job. In my third year. Started off great, although I thought it was a little slow. But it was my first job in the field, so I'm sure they weren't expecting me to hit the ground running anyway.

ConsMy hiring manager got laid off. At the same, I was supposed to get a few terms out of it but because of the cutbacks, my contract was not renewed. (I was supposed to get a few terms out of it.)
