I worked at Corner Bakery Cafe

    Pros

The environment is great. You get to learn different ways to make coffee, great sandwiches and get up close and personal with Catering. They provide uniforms which is always a plus.

    Cons

It seems like the happiness of a manager in a particular region depends on his/her director and how they run their region. My region was ran by someone who was very hard-nosed and pushy. There was inclement weather and he made everyone stay and work in the midst of it, and then re-opened the next day forcing employees to get back in the same inclement weather that paralyzed the city less than 24 hours before. It gave the impression that business and making money was more important than the safety of their people. There also appeared to be "shady" politics, managers were being told that they were promised certain stores which led to tension amongst other managers, and other low performing GMs not being terminated due to supposed personal connections with leadership. Also the hours vary by location which is unfair once you get used to certain location hours and then you are working much later throughout the night. Also, some managers would be too scared to fire employees with tenure regardless of attitude problem which led to them sometimes running the store. Employees should never be given that type of power unless they are formally promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you hire leadership, managers and regionals based on quality and not immediate need. Also, stop cutting corners to save costs. Putting dressing in a bag wont save as much money as reducing the number of new stores that end up opening then immediately underperforming.

I worked at Corner Bakery Cafe part-time

    Pros

You get to work with food, designing display plates and catering trays. Employee discount.
Decent work if you're going to school, as there is usually weekend/evening hours available.

    Cons

Low pay. Some deep cleaning (front of the house walls, floor drains, etc). Some managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't look down your nose at entry-level employees, and stand over their shoulders micro-managing. Trust them to do their jobs.

Great coworkers that are now close friends, however the work is stressful due to a few unfortunate factors.

    Pros

Great Managers, Great team and co-workers, decent to average pay, and flexible hours. Learn the in's and outs of cafe/restaurant style work.

    Cons

Understaffed, and what would otherwise be an average job becomes a terribly hard due to the covering of many different positions at once. For example we have three main positions in the front of the house including server cashier and expo, yet due to our staffing problem often times one person may have to do all three which truly is a stress and is definitely not worth the pay you get for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people, although i know first hand how hard management is trying to hire people.

I have been working at Corner Bakery Cafe part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Fun atmosphere, GM and other managers very personable, half off of food with special comps if your manager sees you working really hard and going above expectations. Other employees are fun and interesting.

    Cons

Managers rarely watch the clock to make sure you make it out on time, i.e. never knowing what time you actually get to clock out. The work week schedule is never posted until the night before. Also, at closing the cashiers have the biggest job, which should actually be split between 2 or 3 people... too much to do. Never get caught with a closing shift!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please take more effort to watch the clock, knowing when you go home would be appreciated. Please keep your personal fun at home and business in the office, meaning, don't stay on your cell phone or chit chat when we need help. Also, not everything is a priority, please don't say that wrapping apples is a priority then get angry if the customer is waiting for 10 seconds then get angry again for not wrapping the apples. There are priorities but they must be manageable.

    Pros

Good if you like to work with people and stay busy. The company is pretty classy and has a certain style that all employees maintain

    Cons

Bad if you don't like to work with people too much. The only way to get a raise is to learn a completely new position, and I already feel like I'm working 2 positions, because I get "borrowed" for other positions that I wasn't hired as. Not really worth the raise amount to learn a new position.

I worked at Corner Bakery Cafe

    Pros

Coworkers were friendly and in the majority of the cases ready to help you

    Cons

Long hours. Difficult to balance with free time if you are looking that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk with your employees. They have a lot to say. At the end they are all day in the front desk knowing what costumers want.

I worked at Corner Bakery Cafe part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I met some great coworkers at my location, but the restaurant was mismanaged and highly understaffed. On the other hand, the pastries were downright fantastic.

    Cons

The "regular" managers were actually as personable as the fellow servers/cooks/etc., but the general manager (in charge of the restaurant as a whole) struck me as disconnected, and hardly empathetic. This might not have been his own fault, though, as the restaurant was poorly staffed (one person responsible for the roles of far too many people, etc.). That can make for some pretty stressed out supervisors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate the work of the servers/cooks/other hourly employees; at the end of the day, these are the faces with whom the guests will interact, and it's not in anyone's best interests for them to (understandably) come across as grumpy and overworked.
