I have been working at Corning

    Pros

Many of the employees are hardworking and dedicated. Corning is a large company with many locationsa and advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Some of the management team is too preoccupied with meaningless office politics and infantile games. Need to focus on building solid relationships within the ranks rather than trying to look good by throwing others under the bus. And the 7 day swing shift just flat out sucks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your eye on the whole picture and get a feel for what is actually happening. Promoting backstabbers will not keep your company strong and competitive.

I have been working at Corning

    Pros

Communication is constant from all levels of the organization. Depending on your role, work/life balance can be catered to meet your needs. Recognition and rewards for good performance is a huge plus.

    Cons

Locations are typical rural and remote. The industry is consumer driven so when demand is low there is a constant fear of layoffs and RIFs (although the compensation packages are typically very generous).

I have been working at Corning as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    Colleagues were friendly and helpful
    The workload wasn't overwhelming
The company provided really good training
The pay was good compared to a lot of other freshman internships

    Cons

The work I was doing wasn't the most interesting thing in the world
I felt a little babied by the head researcher that was in charge of the project I was working on

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Give interns slightly bigger responsibilities

I have been working at Corning

    Pros

High exposure to wide range of scientific areas.

    Cons

As a technician it can be tough to get out of the Contract Employee trap. Lay-offs often loom.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little transparency goes a long way. Managament would do well to be up front about permanent possibilites.

Former Employee - Human Resources Leader in Corning, NY

I worked at Corning full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture is highly rational, data-driven and innovative. Some of the smartest people I've ever met. Company makes long-term investments in fundamental research, then looks for opportunistic applications.

    Cons

"Build it and they will come" is a challenging business strategy. Remote HQ location leads to inward-focus and some interesting politics, including a culture that is indirect and opaque at times - not unlike a stereotypical Japanese firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nurture the next generation of leaders instead of focusing on feeding the egos of the current leadership team. Take more risks on products and people.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
