Mgmt does not get that having quarterly layoffs impact morale at all levels

    Pros

Very few pros, although they do have a decent client base.

    Cons

Enormous turnover, no brand, HR or internal communications. little regard for employees, its all talk. CEO is huge micromanager - employees just expected to react, never question the status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Welcome ideas, your employes are not robots. There is more to life than the IPO and money. If you treated employees and customers better you would reduce your attrition in your CPG customers who are flocking to other providers.

    I worked at Coupons.com as a contractor

    Pros

    Free lunch, drinks, and snacks
    Good location for commuters
    Pretty good pay

    Cons

Coupons has all of the trappings of a "hip" Silicon Valley environment: fridges filled with drinks, snacks galore, and catered (albeit pretty unhealthy) lunches. However, below the surface, it's a drab, lifeless place. Any idea you may get of this being a "fun" company is completely false; it's a sad cubicle farm with quiet, beaten-down employees. Lower management has an iron grip on their employees, often putting up roadblocks without giving any clear communication as to why. Though a lot of managers here are women, it's clear that they favor the men in the office, allowing them to push back more often when ideas aren't universally liked. Any new ideas that you enter the company with are quickly ignored in favor of doing things the way they've always been done. There is also little-to-no contact from HR or upper management if you need to voice concerns about your work environment.

If you're seeking stability, beware: this company's practice of hiring contractors is suspect. If you are entering in a contract role with the intent of converting, think long and hard if you want to be a contractor for a year or more. They started me on a nebulous 3-6 month contract, with the idea that I would be converted in about 2 months. That conversation never happened again; it's just more important that their bottom line looks good rather than if they treat their employees with respect by giving them full-time jobs with benefits.

If you're in your early, mid, or late twenties, don't waste your life here. There are much better places to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not let lower management bully employees. Create a system with HR so that complaints can be heard and addressed before they get out of control. Innovate - your company depends on it!

    Pros

Many friendly, nice, competent employees. The company is on the cutting edge for digital coupons. Good website. Market growth has been strong. Good location for commuters.

    Cons

Top management seems to have little regard for employee future in the company. Top management, and HR, has little regard for inter-departmental issues. High turnover. Also, some department hiring practices are very racially biased.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR and management should take a sincere interest in lower, and mid-level, employee moral and issues. You may learn much from disgruntled employees who just quit out of frustration. No opinion about the CEO - he was inaccessible.

    Pros

Free lunch in area with no restaurants
Company seems to have lock on on-line coupon market

    Cons

Founders have little grasp of technology used in OLTP at scale they do business at - still tied to processes that made sense when they started the company. Siloed development teams block one another. DBAs call shots. Not an environment where an engineer will progress technically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of half your management.

I have been working at Coupons.com full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Compensation & benefits are on par with other local tech companies
    - Free catered lunch every day

    Cons

    - Extremely low quality of employees - few have any prior experience in the Valley culture - the rare talented ones who accidentally ended up here have either left quickly or are actively looking to leave as the economy improves
    - Incompetent management - virtually none have tech experience or have ever worked outside the old-fashioned CPG industry - literally no clue how to run an innovative high-tech company - most never leave their offices
    - No innovation - company is just a rehash of an offline idea (newspaper coupons) with no re-imagining of how to transform CPG promotions for a digital world - this is where your career will come to die
    - Silo organization & no collaboration - you have never worked for a company (esp. in the Valley) with a more hierarchical structure or less cross-dept. collaboration
Clueless founders - they had an idea for starting the company 13 years ago and nothing has changed since then - they refuse to leave & won't go public because they fear losing control

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring only CPG industry experience for management & Sales. The company is desperately in need of new, talented staff from other smart tech companies. Founders need to go.

    Pros

Free food and best location to commute

    Cons

    - Managers are having very very rusty technical skill sets. Couldn't understand domain or technology.
    - More politics. 80% politics and 20% work.
    - No innovation or new learning. With in one year you will be saturated.
    - All good people are leaving just because of not getting opportunity as well as don't want to involve in politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers never listen to team members concerns and giving advice or feedback to them is of no use.

    Pros

free food, scooters, a few nice colleagues

    Cons

This place has unbelievable attrition rate, and HR's handling of terminating employees is very questionable. Incompetent management creates rampant politics. This company has potential, but not with current leadership. I cannot honestly recommend this place to my contacts in my network. Make sure what you are getting into when you apply.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please pay attention to good employees who are being punished for not playing politics.
