If they can get way with paying you less, they will.

I worked at Covance full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great training, very interesting work, the company culture is very focused on quality (quite rightly), everybody knows their role. Constantly striving to improve. I loved my job at Covance. Most of the people are nice, but there are some toxic colleagues, who should be avoided.

    Cons

Less room to try something new, a real lack of career progression. Seriously under-trained line managers often with poor interpersonal skills and issues of their own, creating an an evironment of favouritism and crass decision-making. Some colleagues do not seem to have a handle on quality, but they are carried by their colleagues who are. The promotion criteria seem arbitrary to most people, including those promoted!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider giving your staff who turn out high-quality work - consistently - a better salary, rather than giving others a raise just because they did something 'more' than their job. If they weren't doing their original job to high quality standards, why are they getting a raise if they are joing more, but badly?

Covance - too much talk and not enough substance

I have been working at Covance

    Pros

Can be a fairly dynamic work place. Opportunities do exist to move upwardly within the organisation if you are willing to tow the company line.

    Cons

Poor systems, unwillingness to change, static thinking, lack of togetherness. Attracts some good staff but doesnt retain them. Most managers appear to be people who have stayed at the company for years and have created there own little kingdoms. This tends to result in a lack of cooperation and an insular approach to the other departments. More emphasis needs to be put on performing quality work and producing a quality product. This may impact on throughput and cost but the client retention is likely to improve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to have a thorough update of in house reporting systems and listen to staff about the problems with these systems. 6 sigma is too slow to remedy many of the immediate faults.
