Great Engineering & Sales - Toxic Management. Mansfield is clueless on how to run a surgical device business!

I worked at Covidien full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

great products and technologies. people really care about the impact on patients.

    Cons

toxic management culture... some examples at US Surgical in CT...

one time... management decided that they wanted Covidien to be viewed by the market as producing strong talent. To implement this, they decided that a Marketing or Sales person or executive at Covidien was equivalent to an employee that was one grade higher at a competitor company. Therefore, they proceed to have everyone in the marketing and sales orgs to re-interview for their jobs and ultimately gave everyone a demotion of one grade in their titles (kept the salary the same). Talk about demotivating an entire team!!

another time... sales had always focused on selling via large hospitals. however, for a new product launch, the largest target was obviously in the alt. site. so, rather than compensating the sales org to go after the alt.site, the executive team decided keep the commission structure the same but give enormous sales targets for the product launch. unsurprisingly, the product launch revenues were completely off target, the sales org was not making any money, and the management team started pointing fingers to blame each other! eventually, they decided to fire all the sales people and lower level marketing people that didn't hit the ludicrous targets they had set. unbelievable!

finally, Mansfield is clueless about how to run a surgical device company. the silos of Pharma, Kendall, Valley Lab, and US Surgical from the Tyco HC days are all separate entities and managed like they are all the same business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the old dogs of US surgical still run the place, presenting an absolutely caustic environment, The engineering and products are absolutely top-notch, the sales org is well-trained and smart, but all the good people in marketing and executive team leave or get pushed out because the politics are so awful. Medtronic should clean house on the executives and marketing and promote from top performers in the sales org. and HR sucks, too!

Too many changes and company was sold in the end.

I have been working at Covidien full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I see none, the company was sold after so much work and changes embraced by competent workers. Management is all about shareholders, I guess that is the way it works today. Good for investors that's the pros.

    Cons

Long hours no work life balance. Management shows no appreciation.

I have been working at Covidien full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The best part about Covidien is that you get benefits right away. They also pay pretty good and are resonable about vacation, paid time off and over time.

    Cons

The management and most people need to retire. They are living in the past and are scared and nervous about change and young blood coming in and taking over. The management in SAS is condescending, passive aggressive and un truthful. It seems like Covidien also hires everyone from Asia and India so that no one complains about the BS that goes on. I swear there are maybe a handful of natural born US citizens in the company. I am all for diversity but you can tell when a company hires everyone from over seas because they dont want people to rock the boat. It s a company that needs to adapt and the management and leadership is doing a terrible job at that. Once they get with the times and sme of the 80% of employees that are over 62 start retiring I think things will get better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

retire, don't be afraid of young, ambitious bold ideas, let the younger people flourish and support them

I have been working at Covidien full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Product lines and diversity

    Cons

Terrible customer service, customers have to wait hours on the phone for no result outcomes. Hundreds of accounts have left for any better supplier.
Management is completely asleep or running in circles and unable to correct for poor service and support roles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people with a background in what you offer, not an Intern who has not one real experience to manage product lines, remove middle managers without ethics who are only here for there gain and advancement. No team work here at all.

I have been working at Covidien full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Solid salary and benefits. Lots of innovation going on in some areas of the company.

    Cons

The CEO has good ideas and a vision that I can believe in but senior IT management is not able to realize his vision and instead continues to focus on the bottom line by cutting jobs and shipping others offshore at the expense of the quality of services. Those who remain are overworked, I would know, I'm still there after 3 rounds of layoffs. Morale is at an all time low, the department is poorly regarded by the rest of the company and there is no sense of job security. Senior IT management talks endlessly about how employees can become better partners with their business customers but when push comes to shove individual contributors are handicapped by bureaucracy, politics and an overwhelming workload leaving little room for free thought or any semblance of having their ideas heard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Businesses today need to continue cost cutting measures to stay competitive but those in power should study how things work at the ground level before making arbitrary and ineffective changes.

    Pros

Good products and well known brands

    Cons

Earning potential is dependent on territory
    Salaries for salespersons are terrible

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to create a strategy and stick with it for more than a month. Remove the political machinations that are required to succeed and eliminate a lot of the subpar middle management. Management believes that fear is the best motivator and continues to replace quality salespeople with young, inexperienced people.
