    Pros

Good experience. Good direction. Made plenty of connections and learned a lot.

    Cons

Worked for the news channel and was obviously not as important as the music side.

    Cons

Although a great company, media sales was not a good career fit for me.

    Great Company

I have been working at Cox Media Group

    Pros

The company is very straight forward about what they want from employees. It has always been a great work environment.

    Cons

Buy-outs! Over the years Cox has sold serval different parts on the company and employees never know which market is next, so it makes things a little hostile and give that crabs in a bucket feel.

I have been working at Cox Media Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Privately owned companies have much more freedom to run their businesses as needed. CMG has only been organized for five years under Cox Enterprises and has shown incredible growth. The formation was a consolidation and right-sizing event which resulted in hundreds of layoffs. Bitterness from former employees is understandable.

    Cons

Navigating Cox Enterprises is challenging externally and internally. I see negative reviews for Cox Media Group (broadcast, publishing and digital) that are clearly intended for Cox Communication (cable, internet, phone). When employees do not clearly know for whom they work, there are obviously internal communication problems. Internal movement is nearly impossible. Once hired into a position, an employee is there to stay. There is security in stability, but some people never grow to their full potentials.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is actively working to change things. Movement within any company can only be justified through growth or restructure. If the businesses are working well (and they are), there is little need to change. Quarterly employee meetings are held. They are very informative and inclusive. Management members at all levels are approachable. That is rare and it is a quality in which CMG excels. CMG and Cox Enterprises (parent corporate entity) manage cutting edge technologies and growth opportunities. It would be assuring to employees to see management looking from within to staff these areas instead of using external recruiters. The Most Wanted site and internal employee referrals are encouraging work tools. Some employees register with Cox recruiters for opportunities to move. That is dysfunctional and discouraging. For the most part, the management teams are in-sync and they work well together.

I worked at Cox Media Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of support to help you with a project. They really care about us and they show it.

    Cons

Too many meetings. Too much top down direction as opposed to listening to the little people. They really will stay on you till you secede.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage the long time employees more as you embrace the young and dumb.

I worked at Cox Media Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The culture, employees, and opportunity to make really decent money.

    Cons

Middle-management seems a bit lost on the direction and how to figure out revenue producing initiatives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good employees are leaving left and right because there is a constant sense of uncertainty in their daily roles. The job itself is stressful enough- no one wants to wonder whether or not their position will still exist day-to-day.

    Pros

The benefits and support for training opportunities is good.

    Cons

However some opportunities are not open to all employees to help advance. And when does anyone have time to take some of these courses offered? Unless they are mandatory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Cox Media Group full-time

    Pros

Fun working environment. They treat employees with respect and dignity.

    Cons

If you're not PERSONAL friends with people working there, especially management you have no chance of advancement. They do not like people who keep to themselves when not at work. If you're an extrovert, Cox is the place for you. If you're an outlier, don't bother.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take some time when hiring to look outside your circle of personal friends. Promoting from within is great, but not always, especially when it comes to on air talent.
