I have been working at Crowe Horwath full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice people, made some life-long friends
    Great clients
Good culture of team work developed by certain managers

    Cons

Coming from Big 4 to Crowe, I found that Crowe was very unstructured. For instance, there was no set internal audit standards followed, therefore, each manager handled an internal audit their own way. From the processes and procedures to the actual report write-up, no two internal audits had a cohesive approach. Also, there was no clear path of advancement. You set goals and was judged at year-end, but there was no clear developmental plan. Finally, communication from some managers was non-existent and you didn't know whether you did a good or bad job until you got your review, which gave you zero time to remedy a negative situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better training across offices and departments within offices. Create a clear path for advancement. Teach managers how to manage PEOPLE, not just projects. This involves clear communication.

I have been working at Crowe Horwath full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Younger employee base, Fast-paced deadline and client driven environment, opportunity for advancement of job title

    Cons

Focus is on the chargeable hour rather than client service, you can basically kiss your social life goodbye. The reason there is an opportunity for advancement is due to the turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Public Accounting is a client service industry. Shift focus from the chargeable hour and "realization" to a client service view.

I worked at Crowe Horwath as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

They are a global firm who continues to grow.
    People seem friendly
Those who wish to stay in one location can do so.

    Cons

    Limited performance feedback.
Hard to get noticed unless working directly with a partner.
    Limited growth potential internally.
    Training seems very generic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more feedback to the staff and interns as they work. Don't wait until the end of an internship or until the staff has worked there for 2 years.

Crowe has a mixture of good team oriented people and others who are out only for themselves.

    Pros

Opportunity to prove yourself, support services, friendly environment, telecommute when you need to as long as you don't abuse it

    Cons

There are many senior people who are in over their head and don't know how to run high growth practices. Unrealistic expectations. They used to be very transparent but not any more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on your people and the clients will come.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The culture of the Nashville office seems better than other locations. I think this mainly stems from the quality people managing the Nashville office. I feel valued on a personal level, and not just as an employee.

    Cons

I don't know for sure, but I believe pay is below average to average. However, I think the work-life balance is probably better than it would be somewhere else where the pay would be better.

I have been working at Crowe Horwath full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Wonderful people to work with, great environment.

    Cons

Placement in the organization is key to professional development. Most partners and senior managers are focused on their own career goals and don't take time to develop lower staff. There are some wonderful partners that work with staff on career goals and development, but if you don't get one of those, stay a couple years and move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk regularly with your staff/senior staff about career topics. Not just once a year for annual reviews.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

There are some truly amazing contributors and leaders at Crowe, in all locations. If you are looking for an environment where you can learn and grow your skills, this is a solid one.

    Cons

The focus has shifted over the years to be much more bottom line oriented and less on the individuals. The mentality seemed to become a 'we can recruit more' instead of 'retain the strong talent we have', which is saddening considering the focus that once existed on the team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your people are your strongest asset, especially in a consulting organization where knowledge is your service.
