I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay, good location, peer group close in age, 4 weeks PTO starting off. Can work from home or in office. Training from within.

    Cons

Hours are awful. They work you like a slave. Expect to work 7 days a week, 80+ hours during busy season and continie working crazy hours during the rest of the year.

    Advice to Management

Stop preaching work life balance. Actually do something about it. It's ridiculous that you have no idea how much your people are working and then you complain it's not enough.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-I had a great manager on all my projects so I enjoyed the work and the learning experience. -Good training and ability to work on different projects. -Diverse group of clients

    Cons

-If you are stuck with a bad manager on an engagement, could be very frustrating. -Hours could be long at times, but that is the same I feel with most CPA firms.

    Advice to Management

Invest in employee moral boosters. Have regular scheduled events to make everyone at the company feel included. Invest in employee happiness. It will go a long way.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work/Life Balance; Fair-pay to start; Flexibility; Good in certain industries; Entrepreneurial (you will need to do EVERYTHING on your own (Take charge of your career, but don't expect too much assistance/guidance along the way)

    Cons

Old-school, conservative culture; not much innovation; stuck in 1960's Midwest culture (things move like molasses), industry follower; lack of middle management (either old partners or new 1-2 year recent grads); Good place to start your career, but don't expect to too much support from your team/firm if you are a real go-getter.

    Advice to Management

Consider incentive alignment to stop losing good people, and avoid complacency; reduce useless admin staff and assign admins to specific groups.

I have been working at Crowe Horwath (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent opportunities to learn and many great people to work with.

    Cons

Supervisors have a tendency to avoid conflict by opting not to provide adequate constructive criticism.

    Advice to Management

Ask for, evaluate, and act on upward feedback from lower level resources regarding their supervisors.

    Pros

Much better work / life balance than big four accounting firms... Not much busy after normal busy season unlike busy all year around at big four firms.

    Cons

As the size of the firm is much smaller than big four firms, there is not enough resources when you have complicated issues and questions. You are pretty much on your own.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! Need to focus on home grown professionals.

    Pros

The pros are pretty standard to that of other accounting firm experiences: -Experience you gain -Travel opportunities -Exposure to a variety of industries, as well as firm leadership -Ability to move upward/clear career path

    Cons

The standard accounting firm/lifestyle drawbacks: -Pay/Bonus -Workload can be overwhelming at times -Competency of firm support services...ex. AP department, Office Support Staff -Travel when it's constant and to not so glamorous places -Hours

    Advice to Management

You are only as strong as your weakest link so the caliber of candidate needs to improve greatly than what it has been over the past few hiring cycles.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time

    Pros

Company has good values, great training and interesting clients.

    Cons

Partnership level in the NY office in need of major management training.

    Advice to Management

Send Partners in NY back to college to take a Business Management class. Clique's in a 2,500 person firm don't work. Everyone can see them playing favorites and it is embarrassing. Good talent will and is fleeing, time to look in the mirror. Crowe is not the big 4, not everyone is easily replaceable.

    Pros

Great atmosphere, great people to work with, good location, great benefits. The partners are readily available to all staff members

    Cons

Small clients, not really a great place to learn, extremely understaffed with hardly any executive level employees,

I have been working at Crowe Horwath full-time

    Pros

Work life balance much better than the big 4 People, including partners, were very down to earth and enjoyable to work with Nice benefits - healthcare plan is quite good Partners generally care about their employees' well being

    Cons

Compensation is not consistent with market value at the senior level or above Shockingly low engagement fees lead to unrealistic budgets Very unhelpful if you show interest in diversifying your experience - partners will tell you they want to help you and then you will never make progress towards your goals Incredibly cheap - trivial and legitimate expenses are often questioned both by administrative people in south bend and managers If you are a top performer, you will get worked to death while your lesser performing peers are on easy street.

    Advice to Management

Pay your seniors what they are worth! There is a reason the best ones leave.
