I have been working at Cummins as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Management is helpful and supportive. Job and work balance is acceptable. Local community is thriving. Diversity is aplenty. Good ethics encouraged.

    Cons

Sometimes it seems like the company is too big for itself. Too much focus at times on political agendas. Benefits are good, but not great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the hard work done by the employees at the base level and reward those who commit themselves to the life of the company.

I worked at Cummins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The flexibility of scheduling, and good relations with coworkers

    Cons

Vertical hierarchy, rating and ranking system, average to below average pay for industry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More feedback from Personnel Management needed to ensure employees know where they fall along the track, base pay needs to be higher

I have been working at Cummins as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

The company is very conscious of its effect n the environment and on communities worldwide. It also provides many opportunities and benefits for employees.

    Cons

Most of the benefits for full time employees are not extended to full-time contractors. Some systems are unavailable for contracted workers, and as a contractor, I do not receive any paid time off. I found this surprising in a company that hires so many workers on extended contracts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

extend more benefits to full-time contractors.

I 've had a great experience working for Cummins. Good Managers and fun working environment. However, as any other company this might differ as per function.

    Cons

Locations - most Cummins locations are smaller towns, headquarters is in Columbus, IN. Good place to live with kids. Can be boring for singles

I have been working at Cummins full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Focus on community service, accessible leadership, internal movement capabilities, international opportunities.
If you are a self-starter and "fit the profile", you will do well here. If you are more reserved but a hard worker, it's difficult to get noticed. There are a lot of opportunities if you can build your network and it's a great place to build a career.

    Cons

Must be individually driven, diversity is lacking, "old boys club" definitely present
Though highly ranked in the diversity rankings, all you have to do is look at senior leadership to see that Cummins is not all that diverse, especially when it comes to management opportunities. In the past few years, there seems to be major turnover when it comes to diversity candidates who are just fed up with the glass ceiling and lack of access to higher level opportunities. It's very sad because this is a great company in many ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Truly listen to employees and make change. Town hall sessions with little action begin to be demotivating. Look at the trends, especially when it comes to attrition and diversity, and address it head on. Everyone is talking about it, but no one is addressing it.

I worked at Cummins as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people, has been a solid supporter of local economy. Improved short term leadership.

    Cons

Direction in going global may diffuse core strengths that makes it an icon in it's industry. Long term leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's a fear that playing catch up on going global has missed the shift to a balanced local strength. Current leading companies seem to recognize they have to keep their US strengths while competing globally. Being strong locally and the culture established in doing that is what made the brand what it is. Not having the systems to support global while at the same time losing local talent through attrition (due to shift of emphasis to global) is resulting in losing the "formula for product excellence".

I worked at Cummins as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Great team, a competitive yet helpful team. The office culture is quite laid-back, with plenty of opportunities to rise to the top. The fact that it is HQ'ed in Indiana gives a very nice work-life balance.

    Cons

I found a lot of engineers and technicians spend time in discussing personal details of life. While some think it builds camaraderie, I personally felt that I had to sit through their stories to get a simple and quick answer.
