I have been working at CustomInk (more than 8 years)

    Pros

CustomInk offers a lot of perks, like free meals twice a week, comfortable work space and casual dress. We have many special events. Pretty much everyone is friendly, and whether you know them personally or not folks will always smile at you and say hello.

    Cons

We have become incredibly disorganized, especially from a personnel standpoint. Reporting relationships sometimes are confusing (why two people with the same title report to two different people in completely different departments) and we continually seem to bring in higher level executives who end up having little impact, or even worse an extremely negative impact that becomes difficult to undo when they ultimately depart. There was a time CustomInk believed in promoting from within to maintain and value our culture. This has gone by the wayside in favor of folks with outside experience and fluffy resumes with lots of big words. Ultimately, the influx of people in crucial decision making roles with mismatched values will be the downfall of a once great place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have many talented people within the organization already that have proven themselves. Train from within instead of looking outside. You won't regret it.

    Pros

There is plenty of office camaraderie and fantastic benefits!

    Cons

Busy season can last far longer than expected and become unwieldy, and customers can be dizzying in their demands as the company is known for being particularly flexible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When I worked there, there were sudden, jarring changes in management which made communication difficult and ultimately led to my leaving the company.

I have been working at CustomInk full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I love my coworkers. I've met some of the nicest, most worthwhile people at this job and it is possible to have a legitimately good time at work.

Also, I'm very pleased with the benefits package I receive. My health insurance is great and there are a lot of nice little perks, like a meal provided by the company on Thursdays and a frozen yogurt machine on-site at Fairfax.

    Cons

In Order Operations, a significant portion of your work is tied directly to performance. If you aren't able to meet your quotas, your pay will not be what you expect. And it's not as though each order you handle is the same with the same degree of work required. While one order might take 5 minutes, the next might take a few hours. In EPA, the values of the various order difficulties are staggered so it's certainly better than them being of equal value but it's still problematic.

Additionally, there is no system set up for annual raises, at least not based on company loyalty or seniority. Instead, there are Stride Increases, which are only available annually and are based on performance and accuracy. These increases can be particularly difficult to achieve and are barely in keeping with inflation.

Recently, the company had it's first $1 million dollar day. To celebrate, we're there bonuses? No. Instead, the CEO went around and handed out Hershey's bars with a little printed note thanking us for helping to achieve that milestone. I found it to be insulting and patronizing.

CustomInk is a company that is doing incredibly well in a short period. They are not passing that success onto their employees, at least not in my department.

    Pros

Benefits and perks of working for the company. Lots of fun events.

    Cons

Pay, cost of living is more than pay. Management isn't very organized and doesn't communicate very well in sales service. Not a lot of support for growing within the company.

    Pros

    - serve free meals twice a week
    - good coworkers
    - casual environment

    Cons

The company wants to be thought of as an industrious, Google-like company full of talented, passionate individuals having a good time. They tell you from the outset that it's very easy to move up or around in the company and encourage an open door policy to voice concerns or suggestions. But they put so much effort into superficial policies that there are a lot of structural issues that don't get addressed. Hours for production employees are bad and I found that they typecast me from the beginning then wouldn't let me prove them wrong. I was told I wasn't happy enough to do customer service even though I have 6+ years of job experience in that field with great references. Most people I worked with were vocally unhappy with their position, but felt they didn't have the resources to leave. Part of the problem was that most people hired for production were overqualified, creative people who needed a more varied environment. Employees had a lot to offer, but no one would hear them out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're great at hiring, but terrible at utilizing the talents and input of those you hire. Stop requiring forced happiness and start trying to see how you can make employees, particularly production employees, satisfied with the work they do. People might stick around if they felt valued.

    Pros

Great benefits, lots of room to grow. Constant (sometimes mandatory) overtime available during busy season. Free lunch twice a week and very cheap health insurance.

    Cons

Only existing employees are considered for increasingly responsible positions. Your Manager will probably be a "lifer," along with your coaches and everybody up to Rob K. These folks have no outside experience and the result is misguided incestuous mid to lower level management. Grow slow to get it right.

Ambitious marketing outpaced reasonable hiring capabilities which trickled down to the other teams like a Reaganomics fever dream. Best quote from busy season: "I am so stressed out, I haven't had a day off in over a week and this is all over (expletive deleted) t-shirts! I WANT MY LIFE BACK!"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A "lifer" there once told me "CustomInk is like a salad, I love the toppings but some of the stuff under them is pretty bad." Open up to outsiders for a healthy mix of promotions and new blood. Grow slow.

I have been working at CustomInk

    Pros

Great location, good benefits, free food, nice enough co-workers, fun and relaxed environment. No micromanaging and no scrambling around. Ok pay.

    Cons

Managers aren't really experienced, and it shows. This can be good on one hand, but bad when leadership is actually needed. When first hired, I felt tricked a little. My salary was lower than the minimum that was advertised and the schedule wasn't what was advertised either. It's not THAT big of a deal, but it does make me question the integrity of the company. It's like they advertised greatness to get you excited and then once you're hired, they take all that away. But you don't want to walk away because of the difficult job market. That's what happened. Overall, it's ok, but I'm not WOWed.
