Long hours, current management promotes an environment of mobbing

Current Employee - Senior Mechanical Engineer in San Diego, CA

I have been working at Cymer full-time

    Pros

    - Relatively well paid
    - Some people are really helpful and very willing to be out of their way to help
    - At the center of a dominated industry
    - the company size is small enough for everyone to feel like they can contribute to make changes happen
    - culturally and ethnically diverse
    - a lot of opportunities to get exposures to different technical areas

    Cons

    - Cymer, a much smaller sized organization, is being forced into adapting ASML's big organization's Way-of-Working, which does not work and added way too much paperwork
    - Part of the management created a distrust of management, where people worry about their career future and feeling being taken advantage of.
    - Very long hours (12-hour work day is normal), yet the management or HR does not officially address everyone's over-time by offering means of payment, compensation time off or equivalent.
    - Management created an environment that promotes workplace bullying, where certain groups of people would deliberately, for extended period of time (months to over few years), withhold resources, delay approvals and process, undermine legitimate business interests and secretively allocate resources where they were not approved
    - HR does not hold accountability of their own actions. Such as not impartially protecting the involving parties of their innocence, or not handling criticisms well to address the inherent problems, rather, the criticisms of HR are often dismissed by senior HR members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Address HR's action accountability, currently there is no real organization that could police HR's actions
    - Address the gross over-time issues by offering something in compensation
    - Address Management's protocol to dealing with individuals or groups that repeatedly bully people in need support, since so far, actions are so inconsequential that bullies continue to carry out bullying

I worked at Cymer full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

When times are good the money flows. The product is interesting. Very high tech.

    Cons

The semiconductor industry is very cyclic. When it is down the company cuts staff deeply. Even engineering is wiped out. They build up a new engineering staff every cycle. The cycles are on the order of 3 years. And each new cycle they tell the new comers that they've changed. They say their are turning around their reputation for lay-offs. But you won't be around on the next cycle when they tell the next group the same thing.

It's a laser company. Physics and optics are king. Engineering is a service organization. Everyone outside the inner circle is a temp.

I worked at Cymer full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good scientists.
Very good at what they do. However that doesn't seem to be good enough to make EUV work.

    Cons

Anyone outside of core R&D theoretically fills a 'transactional' role at Cymer and liable to be classified as deadwood at the next round of layoffs which isn't usually far away in the cyclical semiconductor market
    Top heavy, finger pointing culture
President is a micro manager- promotes yes-men and fires those who hold their line.
No career path unless you are on of the select few. HR is ineffective
    Terrible work/life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Please shake up management.

It used to be a cooperative culture, but that was improved with a dysfunctional system.

I have been working at Cymer full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Work on very complex technology. Learning opportunities.

    Cons

Deciding between doing what needs to be done, or what you are told. Repeatedly revisiting issues rather than resolving them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can increase profitability by using your experienced workers as business advisers, rather than going top down.

    Pros

Interesting technology. Decent compensation and benefits. Good location and weather.

    Cons

Weak and confused senior management. Inefficient operations. Politicized and unclear decision making process. Everything requires top management formal approval. New flagship product (EUV Source) release 3+ years behind original schedule. Lopsided work life balance causes burnout and high employee turnover.

I worked at Cymer full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great technology, good pay and benefits. EUV is separate division controlled by ASML, better run, more opportunity

    Cons

The Light Source division is run by the old CEO. No-one is empowered to do anything without his agreement. Won't hear any dissent, hence surrounded by 'Yes' men who simply re-enforce his views. Decision making is consequently painfully slow, which makes the customer support extremely difficult for the folks in the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get new management (Light Source Div), empower the employees to actually be able to 'do' what you pay them for.

I have been working at Cymer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with in a stressful environment.

    Cons

Management would rather hire someone from outside and current employees are not given opportunities to advance - long standing issue. There seem to be about 1/2 as many employees needed to support plans. This may be changing in the future, but it doesn't help the current employee base. I can't remember the last time I only worked 40 hours. Long hours needed to tread water.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your current employees an opportunity to grow into new roles.

I worked at Cymer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People have passion and desire to do well. They are truly on the edge of technology and one of the only companies in the market doing this type of work.

    Cons

Tightly held, micro-managed, respect for individuals as professionals is missing, ability to success and think on your own is great hampered by the strong central control of one person.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the leaders be leaders. Stop micro managing and creating an environment of fear.

I have been working at Cymer full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Employee events and community work would be the high points at Cymer followed by the technology.

    Cons

Too many managers and not enough people doing the work. Managers fail to give priority to tasks and when they do it becomes a moving target. Processes are not defined. You have to chase down a VP to purchase anything. They give you a company cell phone and you get calls at all hours. 80% of my job are tasks that do not require an engineering degree. Politics rule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit delivering schedules that can not be met so that employees can concentrate on work and not debating about the schedule. Put employees in tasks related to their strengths.
