Beware of high compensation trap for a chaotic company

Senior Analyst (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at DIRECTV full-time for more than a year

Pros-High compensation
-Nice campus
-Highly intelligent and well-experienced coworkers (that don't stick around for long)

Cons-Fast turnover of strategic and innovative thinkers is highly evident as the culture does not value out of box thinkers.
-Directors lack leadership values and qualities. As direct liaisons between VPs and the working class, they lack the competence, confidence, and talent to inspire and mentor.
-Promotions are handed out mysteriously to those who spend more time on administratively sucking up than those that exhibit comprehensive skills and work ethic.

Overall, don't come work here if you want to be challenged, want to challenge others, or want to learn. It is a dire environment of PowerPoint decks that flip flop between clueless readers.

This is a sad story as Mike White seems to actually care about his employees. It is those below him that are running around lost and causing chaos.

Advice to Senior Management-Take risks and become less hierarchal
-Foster more cross-functional conversations

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Lots of turnover.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at DIRECTV full-time

ProsModerately decent pay for someone without experience or a degree of some kind. I would only recommend as a very short-term job.

ConsConstant changing of demands that appear to be created in order to weed out the lower-performing half of the workforce on nearly a monthly basis.

Good opportuity if you are willing to pay the price

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
El Segundo, CA

I have been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than 3 years

ProsCompensation is excellent.
Ample opportunity to move up if you are willing to go above and beyond.

ConsNever ending stream of meetings that only leaves what would otherwise be personal time to do actual work (before 8:00, after 6:00 weekends).
Very little guidance during projects or ramp-up training (you are on your own).
Extremely competitive and cut throat environment that dramatically hampers intra-team and cross functional cooperation.
Random transfers to other rolls or departments with no employee feedback asked for or explanation given.

Used to be a great place to work

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
Huntington, WV

I have been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-a lot of fun things to do.
-fun people to work with

Cons-We've had Mandatory over time almost every single week for almost four months now, it started by being "just this week." Now it is every week, and it just keeps getting worse.
-Not a lot of notice for anything, new practices, rather or not working a holiday will be requested...nothing.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some people, and stop being disrespectful to your staff.

Sad state of affairs

Business Analyst (Former Employee)
El Segundo, CA

I worked at DIRECTV as a contractor for less than a year

ProsNew campus being built makes for new startup feel

ConsManagement a bunch of scared ducks quacking behind each others back. Managers lie and duck respoinsibilties

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate the workers you have instead of trying to keep the peace with grumpy employees who have been ruining the system for decades

At this location, you must be a member of the 'good ole boys group' to be recognized.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Tulsa, OK

I worked at DIRECTV full-time for more than a year

ProsFree Directv service, very easy for girls to be sexually harassed by management. I witnessed girls being fired after receiving nude pictures from a member of the 'good ole boy squad'.

ConsBig corporation and upper management doesn't really get exposure to the games being played.

Advice to Senior ManagementAddress the games being played there and stop the turnover. You're one of the top 5 call centers to work for in Tulsa, but too much power is being given to those that have no people skills or real concern for the company they work for. This is evident when you fire 3 girls that very easily could have retaliated by filing suit against Directv for the evident harassment they encountered while working there.

Software engineering: Careless management, cronyism, lack of transparency, technical stagnation

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
El Segundo, CA

I worked at DIRECTV full-time for more than 5 years

ProsBroad customer base, complex technical problems, good salary, good benefits, room for advancement, many new opportunities

ConsOld boys network makes for a less female friendly atmosphere, management is not forward looking and will not innovate technically, management values clique membership over integrity and trust, anyone who compains will be targeted and harassed, too many unfruitful meetings, fear based decision making process dominates

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a very close and long look at all the Directors and above and make sure they are doing the job they are supposed to do. They should not be in the position just because they have been with the company for a long time. Don't reward people for who their friends are and don't punish people for speaking their mind. Challenge the status quo effectively and don't be afraid to change old processes simply because that's they way it's always been done.
