I worked at DIRECTV full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Broad customer base, complex technical problems, good salary, good benefits, room for advancement, many new opportunities

    Cons

Old boys network makes for a less female friendly atmosphere, management is not forward looking and will not innovate technically, management values clique membership over integrity and trust, anyone who compains will be targeted and harassed, too many unfruitful meetings, fear based decision making process dominates

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a very close and long look at all the Directors and above and make sure they are doing the job they are supposed to do. They should not be in the position just because they have been with the company for a long time. Don't reward people for who their friends are and don't punish people for speaking their mind. Challenge the status quo effectively and don't be afraid to change old processes simply because that's they way it's always been done.

  2.

The intern program wasn't terrible, but it had all of the cons of a huge corporation and didn't get to work with others.

Current Employee - Intern in El Segundo, CA

I have been working at DIRECTV as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The manager who I worked with definitely knew what he was doing - he did his best to help me out with all of my work. The workload as an intern was light as expected. I did like the onsite campus feel, though personally I didn't get to stay on the campus. The internship did pay fairly well.

    Cons

HR and IT support was pretty slow at solving internal problems, which meant a lot of time sitting around. In general as an intern, you don't get to work with others very much (if at all), which could be a plus or a minus, depending on how you view it. I wish I got to do a little bit more lasting work, since the work I did felt rather insignificant. I don't see a lot of career benefits or opportunities for growth - it feels like a company that you settle down with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get IT out of the BT building! It's isolating having the entire corporation running locally, while a small segment of the company is completely in a different location. The feel of the company just wasn't there for me, as an intern.

Former Employee - Customer Retention Agent in Boise, ID

    I worked at DIRECTV full-time

    Pros

Generally, the compensation was above-average for the area. Additionally, working in a "team" environment helped alleviate stress. The benefits package was also nice and helped job performance.

    Cons

The difficult responsibilities associated with retention were disproportionately and overwhelmingly concentrated. Too many of the daily tasks were associated with hostile customer negotiations. The strict metrics compounded the stressful interactions with customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would challenge the management to re-imagine the workload distribution for retention specialists and to find a way to offer positive reinforcement over negative reinforcement.

I have been working at DIRECTV

    Pros

Name recognition- possibly help your resume.
Great gig if you can be an FTE - lousy if you are not an employee

    Cons

Contractors, particularly the more expensive PM types, are treated disrespectfully and to many in IT management, as disposable as yesterday's razor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want a stable contractor workforce who would seriously entertain any entreaties of "conversion" and not be a perennially revolving door, you need to treat their knowledge and expertise with a minimal semblance of respect - otherwise you will be bad mouthed in the IT industry and continue to have a sub-par coterie of employees supplemented by a few junior converted contractors - not improving your sad gene pool.

Former Employee - Project Management in El Segundo, CA

I worked at DIRECTV as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Compensation. But you should be wary of any employer who has an unusually high compensation package of comparable jobs, it can mean they have issues with retention - which was the case in this situation.

Very fast paced environment. This is good if you're a go getter, self sufficient and like constant challenges.

Almost everyone was friendly and solicitous.

    Cons

Poor communication skills. This is a very fast moving environment and dealing with managers with poor communication skills is death, and creates a lot of unnecessary and extra work. Employees seem to tiptoe around poor managers, and try to sort things out on their own.

Lack of respect for time management.

Glossing over issues until they become volcanic.

Onboarding/Administrative support. Being a new hire there made you feel like you were dropped into the Amazon jungle with little to no orientation, no point person for inquiries and set up support.

Everybody was stressed out. This had a lot to do with poor senior management in place that just should not be in those positions who created confusion and double work for staffers

Terrible knowledge transfer, nothing was documented/lack of SOP's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to move poor managers, the quality of work of professional staff downstream will improve, probably immediately.

I have been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Above average pay and benefits including complementary television service. Generous bonus and stock awards for those at the right level with sufficient tenure. Smart people willing to work hard.

    Cons

Very formal, corporate environment with long hours - business attire four days a week. Frequent need to work weekends.

Culture of politics and infighting. Employees who embrace and create conflict are rewarded ahead of those who work together.

Lack of transparency in the promotion and review process - very little in the way of career development

Innovation is at a standstill - company is leaning on Latin America business to drive growth while it treads water in the US and puts all profits into stock buybacks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

CEO has tried to change the culture of Directv, but progress has been slow. This is a company in a rapidly changing industry that is trying hard to hold onto profits and fight change.

Current Employee - Call Center Supervisor in Englewood, CO

I have been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Over all a good company to work for. The agents and Supervisors where treated fairly and with dignity. Coming in from the outside it is hard to get the shifts you want.

    Cons

No upward mobility from the supervisors position. Good shifts are taken by the folks that have been there the longest and there is no chance of moving up. Plan on working all weekends.

Former Employee - IT Principal Analyst in El Segundo, CA

I worked at DIRECTV full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I worked with some amazing people. All employees get free DiRECTV. The overall benefits were good.

    Cons

I worked with some horrible people. Constantly shifting organizational structure, no real advancement benefits, Sr. management were the only ones being promoted, less than cost of living wage increases, horrible HR department. Although it is one company, the business units exist as separate entities, which makes it difficult to have any uniformity in procedures and processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees. They are he ones who ultimately drive your success. Be fair and impartial. Just dint take the word of the manager blindly.

Current Employee - IT Project Manager in El Segundo, CA

I have been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Free DIRECTV programming and services provided to all full time employees. The company is certainly an industry leader and employees take pride in the role they play in bringing about this success. Executive Management is sincere and committed to providing the best value possible to our subscribers and in employee development or career opportunites.

    Cons

There is a disconnect between organizational and executive support in value shown towards employees. Long hours and lack of management support and recognition are common within the IT PMO and project teams. Frustrations are openly displayed but little genuine concern or action is taken by management. If you are looking for a career opportunity with growth this is may not be the place for you. If you want a job and are satisfied with little value or interest placed on your individual needs then you will not be disapointed.
