    Change to make an impact

    Marketing (Current Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsCompany has a startup feel where you can make a big impact if you want to. Compared to other places I have worked where every email/presentation/document needed several levels of approval, at DISH I regularly send my plans immediately to a General Manager or VP. In meetings they also listen to my opinion and I don't have to hold back on what I think.

ConsTo work at DISH you have to be ready for a crazily fast pace of work and that processes aren't always streamlined. Sometimes it feels like a constant scramble to get things into market.

Advice to Senior ManagementFaster isn't always better.

Continuing to improve employee focus. Lots of opportunity for those who want to have a career.

    Operations Manager (Current Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsDish is a great place to work if you want to be able to build things. As a company, doing projects in-house is almost always preferable to hiring an outside firm. This means plenty of opportunity to build your skills in areas of interest.
The people are outstanding - fun to work with and dedicated to good results.

ConsVacation time is relatively limited (2 weeks until 5 years).
Due to the nature if the industry things change often. If you like things to remain status quo for long periods you may find this frustrating.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up with the employee events at Corporate - they are fun and provide a nice outlet for the hard work people are putting in.
Consider sharing department profit/loss responsibility downward within management. Currently maintained at the highest levels does not allow growing managers to gain experience managing a budget on a small scale.

Phenomenal career and personal/professional growth opportunities

    Operations Manager (Current Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsLOTS of opportunity to learn and grow. I can't stress this point enough. Access to middle and executive leadership coupled with challenging, cross-functional work enables growth and experience.
Recent leadership additions (in the past 5 years) are great and drive positive cultural changes.
Some of the best people I've ever worked with are my coworkers.
A lot of investment in cultural issues over the past few years (credit to CEO for driving much of that change).
Work-life balance is a priority for my managers.
    Profit sharing.
    Excellent Tuition reimbursment program.
    Recent investments in leadership training.

ConsRemnants of the older culture still around (bad middle managers, not adapting to changing workforce).
Benefits are so-so. Would like more time off, smaller deductible.
Lots of red tape to get things done. Much of it seems like it's done because that's how it's always been done.
Workplace is getting a little outdated (older furniture, conference rooms could use a facelift, etc.).

Advice to Senior ManagementMuch less micro-management in Operations. COO is involved in WAY too many things. Leadership in his org should have more leeway to make decisions and move on their own. Focus on strategy vs. implementation.
Continue with the cultural changes. They're much appreciated.
    Be more competitive with benefits.
Continue to invest in leadership training.

Challenging but rewarding place to work

    Senior Manager (Current Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsThe people here are great, the work itself is always interesting, work life balance is excellent, and ambition and results are rewarded. The pay is also very competitive, and the company operates with integrity.

ConsLeadership has come a long way in understanding that people are the company's greatest asset and the cost of attrition is too high. That said, improvement still needs to be made in this area as I think some members of senior management are either struggling to change or are just unwilling to challenge the policies and practices that don't make sense. Don't be complacent -- fight the battles that need to be fought.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore work needs to be done to change the image of the company. Getting people to come in for interviews or consider employment offers has become very challenging due to the negative (and inaccurate)perception people have. I would start questioning executives (not just managers!) whose areas have high attrition rates and hold them accountable for improvement. The word will get out that this is a great place to work!

Awesome opportunities, good people, if you're good they take care of you

    Senior Manager (Current Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsThe pros at DISH are : 1. great, exciting products to work on. Major media company in Denver, don't have to move to NY or LA! innovative, disruptive and out in front of everyone else.

    2. The people here are fantastic. It's amazing how many smart, funny, outgoing people work here.

    3. If you are good and get identified as high-potential or a star, you get WELL taken care of. Not everyone fits this mold obviously, but for those that work hard and are smart, the sky is truly the limit. Good salaries (six-figures for good senior managers), stock options, etc. are all on the table for high-achievers.

ConsCan be really fast-paced, so those who like a easy 9 to 5 without any excitement need not apply. Lots of alpha types. Not super competitive between employees, but definitely competitive in terms of ideas and all-around pace. Gets hundreds of e-mails a day. Great for high achievers with energy.

Advice to Senior ManagementThings are getting good but don't take foot off gas pedal in terms of improving quality of life for employees. Lots of really smart talented people who deserve to be fairly compensated. not just high achievers. Health benefits still below industry standards.

    Love Working for DISH

    Customer Service Manager (Current Employee)
    Thornton, CO

ProsI have worked at DISH in excess of 10 years and have really enjoyed it. There are endless opportunities for upward mobility. As a leader at DISH, we continue to strive to make DISH a great place to work.

ConsBe prepared for change. We are in a very competitive market and that competition leads to a lot of change.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to re-evaluate compensation and benefits. In some of our more Customer Care Center markets, we risk losing excellent employees for these reasons.

Great opportunity for the self motivated person

    Senior Management (Current Employee)
    Englewood, CO

ProsBest things are that there is lots of opportunity to learn and improve. If you are self starter, you can create an impact. Company is entrepreneurial, can make fast upper management decisions and is focussed on long term value creation.

ConsNot very structured in career development and progression, and quirky policies. If you enjoy what you do, it is easy to overlook the quirks

    Overall good place to work

    Advanced Tech Agent (Current Employee)
    Christiansburg, VA

ProsGood money, good bonuses and job advancement opportunities FOR THOSE WHO DO THEIR JOBS

Consdealing with people highly irate (often to the point of verbal abuse) for reasons brought on by themselves (i.e.: not paying bill, ordering countless ppv/vod/excessive programming, sometimes time moves slow when you reach a pattern, too lenient on giving credits/retention offers (trains customers to complain)

Advice to Senior Managementeasier to use tools, some of us catch on to change easily but others don't

Dish is one of the best companies you should come work for us!

Call Center Support Staff (Current Employee)
    Harlingen, TX

ProsGreat pay and staff. Agent are highly motivated and it is easy to work with those who are not. Site leaders are always treating everyone with respect. Dish over the last two years has made a big effort to train its leaders to learn to lead not to just yell directives. Dish loves to show people that they care and this is the best thing. The supervisor staff is very dedicated and the training department is one of the best I have ever seen.

ConsSome management issues (not rare in call centers) but at the end of the day you come and work for you staff and your own personal growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementCertain management needs to reconsider if they can do the job. A staff member in particular seems to have no clue as to what is going on and assumes the worst of all staff. Every department works well together but when you have one person holding back a department things get tough. If a manager or supervisor is afraid for someone to take their job then they are not doing something right. Management should not be talking bad about others behind their backs because it will not resolve any issues. Confidential items should be just that. If a true confidential environment existed without a fear of retaliation then the company would be a better place.
