Improvement is possible

Customer Service Representative II (Current Employee)
Hilliard, OH

I have been working at DISH full-time for less than a year

ProsA great focus to committing changes that will improve company to employee relationships. Open door policies make it possible to get to know the management team. Newly designed career paths give a focus for employees follow. Education is encouraged. Excellent hiring process and the training program is excellent. The tools are the best I have worked with.

ConsAlthough education is promoted intelligence is not. Thinking outside of the box, literally outside of the dialogue box, is discouraged. Tool adherence is a huge focus leaving little room to deviate even if it better suits a particular customer.
The benefits package is disgusting. There is a focus on retirement and savings which is great in the long run. Having mostly free satellite service is nice. Yet for employees that have families the medical and dental benefits are unattainable. After premium, and health savings plan to meet the annual deductible, an entry level employee can expect half of their earning to be deducted for a moderately sized family.
The salary is definitely deficient compared to the amount of work stress involved in meeting the standards of excellence expected. The metrics required to excel are set to a nearly unattainable level and only are rewarded if all metrics are surpassed. An employee that excels in creating company revenue will not be compensated if all metrics are not met. The goals are met and in most cases by employees that have learned to cheat the system. The work environment is friendly but a shared desk policy does not promote health. The work spaces are often filthy, the chairs are uncomfortable and most are broken, the cubicles although spacious are a dull gray and barren place to be trapped in.
Identity and individual flare are discouraged from the moment an employee walks in the door. Not an environment for creativity. Schedules are impractical and leave no time for a personal let alone family life.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook to the health of your employees and the metrics that are the main focus of the company might be attainable. It is hard to take care of a customer that is disgruntled when fighting an infection picked up at a shared work place and no chance of treatment because going to a doctor is impossible after payroll deductions. Pay more or provide reasonable benefits.

Long Hours - 60 hour weeks

Sales (Former Employee)
Littleton, CO

I worked at DISH full-time for more than a year

ProsLots of money to be made while people are still paying for cable.

ConsNo work life balance. Big dollar punishments for skipping a word in the script up to 300.00. Never be a minute late you'll lose any bonuses you earned that week. Mom's don't apply. Health benefits have high deductible. According to many, expect to be fought on unemployment insurance if let go for whatever reason.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the health benefits so people don't have to evaluate whether they can afford to go to the doctor.

FSS I (Current Employee)
Greenville, NC

I have been working at DISH full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPlenty of work/overtime if wanted. Pay is better due to an market adjustment. Co-workers become family. Get to see all of the area you are located in and see new things.

ConsHired supervisor right off the street, didn't know anything about the job or what it takes to get the job done he only cared about numbers. Long nights no family time and working in the weather.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the techs they are on the front lines of the company.

Large company with lots of rules

Installer (Current Employee)
Denver, CO

I have been working at DISH full-time for more than a year

ProsSteady paycheck from a large company. Generally there's overtime available. Free satellite TV!

ConsTechs are always compared by performance metrics which can be difficult to meet. Bonuses depend on performance and expectations are very high. Do not think that this is the kind of job you can sleep through.

Advice to Senior ManagementBenchmark metrics don't take into account geography. In a rural zone, techs have to drive 40-50 miles to a job.

A job you like, but you wish you could love it instead...

Coach (Current Employee)
Christiansburg, VA

I have been working at DISH full-time for more than 5 years

Pros-Opportunities to earn VERY good compensation (bonuses, profit-sharing, etc)
-Overall a very friendly and approachable management staff, coaches included
-A great opportunity to build a career, or build a strong foundation as a launching pad into another career

Cons-Broken Reporting: This could possibly be the biggest item of concern amongst our center. Almost on a monthly basis, something is broken. Either a report goes missing, a tool stops working, or communication breaks down between departments, causing mayhem (for lack of a better word). Every moment of every employee's day is tracked and evaluated, so it's a huge deal when you hold someone accountable for metrics that are unfair, simply because they are being measured with a broken tool, or if they can't be measured at all for several weeks. Mistakes happen, and that is certainly understandable. What is not understandable is not making it right with the employee whose performance appraisal was hindered by one of those mistakes.

-Skill Training: You wouldn't ask the hospital janitor to perform surgery on a patient, right? So why do we ask agents to handle call types that they haven't received proper training for? We're smart enough to understand that we need to meet the customer's needs and that sometimes we will need to help with overflow if call volumes get extremely high. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, this causes many employees to become discouraged since they feel they cannot properly assist their customers. More importantly, it can sometimes cause the customer experience to be less than world class. We either need to invest in more training, or we need to leave specialty skills for the agents that have been trained to handle them.

-Insurance: Even before the Affordable Care Act, a lot of employees felt the insurance/coverage plans were very lacking. For a company as successful as Dish, I would think we could see more and better options for health coverage.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere really is no comparison if you look at the management staff from 5 years ago to the present staff. There has been massive improvement across the board, and for that I am very thankful. I personally think that many people do not appreciate the efforts management has made over the last few years as much as they should. However, we have to improve on the way we handle feedback from our employees. We have training videos and seminars and meetings all requesting feedback and asking employees to bring items of concern to light. When issues are brought to attention however, it seems that often times nothing is done. If the perfect word doesn't make its way to the perfect ear, the feedback gets lost. This starts at coaches/supervisors and only goes up from there. We have all been guilty of it, and we simply have to do better.
