Hard Work and Patience Are Rewarded

Operations Manager (Current Employee) Englewood, CO

ProsI've been at DISH for 5 years and I've seen quite a bit of improvement in moral and employee engagement on a corporate level. If you aren't willing to work hard DISH isn't the place for you - if you are someone who thinks they are entitled to be promoted every six months just because you are there and not based on merit - go work else where.

I've moved quickly into a management position during my time at DISH and I've been given opportunities to learn and expand my skill sets. Although I've had one or two bad mangers - overall I've always worked with managers who care about me and my goals.

ConsOne of the things our CEO and Chariman has asked employees is to "know their business." Select departments know their business and understand other's roles. Many departments though don't know their business and how decisions impact other departments -this often means they end up creating more work for everyone else.

Vacation time is not ideal - and I believe we lose employees because of this. Employees only receive two weeks of vacation time until they hit 5 years and then they get 3. Not very competitive in today's job market. To attract the best employees DISH should be at least offering 3 or 4 weeks initially.

Although corporate has made retention a focus some department heads have not. We've lost a lot of great people as a result.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on retention - recognize that we have talented people and focus on keeping them here.

Department heads need to do a better job of communicating - a lack of communication has caused countless issues.

    It was a learning experience.

Inventory Specialist (Former Employee) Columbia, MO

    ProsExcellent pay.
    Some Overtime.
    Decent benefits.
Some computer work; data entry. Not on my feet the entire shift.

ConsThis office is a smoking establishment, so be prepared to breathe cigarette smoke all day, every day.

Extremely high stress. You are expected to do the work of 2-3 people; you're expected to be exceptional. If you're the average employee, that makes mistakes, you're head is going to be on the chopping block every day you show up for work. Especially when upper management visits to inspect the office and warehouse.

DISH has been by far the best organization that I have worked for!

    Coach (Current Employee) Harlingen, TX

ProsDISH has been great on career growth. DISH get us the proper training we need to succeed and prosper at our craft. Great pay and flexible hours are a great benefit to our employees!

ConsI can honestly say that i don't have Cons towards DISH, but what I can say is that it's very challenging from one day to the next. If you are very adaptable, you will succeed and if you have trouble adapting, you will struggle. That is constant here at DISH, but for the better. I do not like being complacent in my job, change it up from time to time.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep listening to your employees, they are your bloodline to DISH. I know there are things agents and management ask that can not be met, but other things are!

An enjoyable experience that I would definitely do again.

    Intern (Current Employee) Denver, CO

ProsThe location of Denver, CO is obviously a huge plus and all the interns are housed in a long stay hotel where they can get to know each other well. The corporate headquarters is located on a beautiful campus right next to a golf course. My superiors were generally interested in my learning and the benefits I would take away from the internship experience.

ConsNot all interns are created alike, with some schools receiving more salary compensation than others.

Operations Manager (Current Employee) Englewood, CO

ProsIf a person applies themself they can go far at Dish in a short amount of time.

ConsThe salary and health benefits could definately be improved for such a large company

Advice to Senior ManagementAdvancement to management can happen quickly and now with great development plan and tools to be a good manager if the tools are used and you apply yourself

Awesome opportunities, good people, if you're good they take care of you

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Englewood, CO

ProsThe pros at DISH are : 1. great, exciting products to work on. Major media company in Denver, don't have to move to NY or LA! innovative, disruptive and out in front of everyone else.

    2. The people here are fantastic. It's amazing how many smart, funny, outgoing people work here.

    3. If you are good and get identified as high-potential or a star, you get WELL taken care of. Not everyone fits this mold obviously, but for those that work hard and are smart, the sky is truly the limit. Good salaries (six-figures for good senior managers), stock options, etc. are all on the table for high-achievers.

ConsCan be really fast-paced, so those who like a easy 9 to 5 without any excitement need not apply. Lots of alpha types. Not super competitive between employees, but definitely competitive in terms of ideas and all-around pace. Gets hundreds of e-mails a day. Great for high achievers with energy.

Advice to Senior ManagementThings are getting good but don't take foot off gas pedal in terms of improving quality of life for employees. Lots of really smart talented people who deserve to be fairly compensated. not just high achievers. Health benefits still below industry standards.

Challenging but rewarding place to work

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Englewood, CO

ProsThe people here are great, the work itself is always interesting, work life balance is excellent, and ambition and results are rewarded. The pay is also very competitive, and the company operates with integrity.

ConsLeadership has come a long way in understanding that people are the company's greatest asset and the cost of attrition is too high. That said, improvement still needs to be made in this area as I think some members of senior management are either struggling to change or are just unwilling to challenge the policies and practices that don't make sense. Don't be complacent -- fight the battles that need to be fought.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore work needs to be done to change the image of the company. Getting people to come in for interviews or consider employment offers has become very challenging due to the negative (and inaccurate)perception people have. I would start questioning executives (not just managers!) whose areas have high attrition rates and hold them accountable for improvement. The word will get out that this is a great place to work!
