  1. What one reads in the paper about the upper management, their behavior, salaries and severance payments disappoints me.

    Pros

Working with the children can be so rewarding. Many teachers are helpful but with their responsibilities they have little time to give you. Of course one does not need to accept a job every day.

    Cons

Feet that substitutes are taken advantage of in some schools. The pay per diem has not changed for years. If you are long term you buy supplies on your own and spend many hours beyond the school day preparing and doing paperwork so the pay turns out to be even less. When called by a school feel that I need to take the job or might not be asked again.

    Advice to Management

Clean up your own house so that there are people who truly care about the children and the teachers. Every one who works in a management capacity should have spent time in a classroom to see what it is like. Don't pay tutoring companies as much per hour for one student as you pay a substitute teacher with 25 students in a classroom per day. Try to clean up the budget waste.

    Pros

The pay is great for a new teacher, and the students are amazing. I worked with a lot of very intelligent, dedicated educators.

    Cons

My principal made my first year of teaching an absolute nightmare. The district pushed arbitrary policies and offered no support to teachers who were in need of help. Our school was COMPLETELY out of control--veteran teachers felt helpless and unsafe at work, and nobody was willing to help. Instead, teachers were constantly threatened with termination, and everybody was just miserable.

    Pros

Good people, rewarding job. Amount of time away from the job is great and about the only real positive to being a teacher.

    Cons

Awful pay and benefits, high stress environment. Administration loves to breathe down your neck. Policies come in the form of trends. Next year, there is a new buzz word that will magically solve every problem.

    Advice to Management

Stop being hypocritical. Remember what it was like being a teacher.

    Pros

My experience as a teacher at Dallas ISD was amazing. I got to work with some great kids and families. My principal was very supportive and I learned a lot from many of the teachers I had the pleasure of working with. (Your experience will largely depend on the principal you work for...)

    Cons

That said, the direction the district is heading in is not for me. There is a very militaristic atmosphere from the top levels of administration. The amount of micromanaging that goes on is overwhelming and it feels like higher ups in central staff only want to make teachers' jobs more difficult instead of acknowledging how challenging our job already is.

    Advice to Management

Try to remember what if felt like to be a teacher. Recognize the current challenges we are facing and think of how to better support us rather than looking to add to our already frightening workload. Also, before implementing new policies for teachers to adhere to, try ironing out the details BEFORE you put them into place. Nothing is more frustrating than feeling that the people who you work for do not know what they are doing or do not respect you enough to have carefully thought out policies in place. We are here for the students, not as a stepping stone to propel you to your next career.
