    Challenging yet rewarding work

Bilingual Elementary School Teacher (Former Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsMy experience as a teacher at Dallas ISD was amazing. I got to work with some great kids and families. My principal was very supportive and I learned a lot from many of the teachers I had the pleasure of working with. (Your experience will largely depend on the principal you work for...)

ConsThat said, the direction the district is heading in is not for me. There is a very militaristic atmosphere from the top levels of administration. The amount of micromanaging that goes on is overwhelming and it feels like higher ups in central staff only want to make teachers' jobs more difficult instead of acknowledging how challenging our job already is.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to remember what if felt like to be a teacher. Recognize the current challenges we are facing and think of how to better support us rather than looking to add to our already frightening workload. Also, before implementing new policies for teachers to adhere to, try ironing out the details BEFORE you put them into place. Nothing is more frustrating than feeling that the people who you work for do not know what they are doing or do not respect you enough to have carefully thought out policies in place. We are here for the students, not as a stepping stone to propel you to your next career.

    High School teacher

    Teacher (Current Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsThe same as all teaching jobs: summer and winter holidays, benefits and the opportunity to work with other teachers.

ConsThis district is poorly managed, current superintendent has created a lot of havoc thus far. Teacher morale is low, teachers haven't received a raise in 4 years and discipline management from the campus administrators is poor.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire Mike Miles and put someone in charge who could finally make DISD proud!

Individual schools can be good, district is a nightmare

    Teacher (Former Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsMagnet schools are generally decent workplaces, salary is better than other nearby districts, though frontloaded

ConsSystemic disrespect for teachers as professionals, very little trust, racial tension, ugly and under-maintained facilities, expensive benefits for families, administrators are generally not good at management and leadership, long history of promotion to level of incompetance

Advice to Senior ManagementMan, if I knew, I'd apply for an admin job. Problems are too deep to tackle in an online review.

We are supposed to be there for the kids...

    Teacher (Former Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsMany different schools in different areas, seemingly more chances for job advancement in some fields, pays more than other districts in the area, large district with more chances for employment

ConsLack of support for teachers and other staff who come in contact with the public, bad public image, not enough subs, slow hiring process and certain necessary offices make it very hard to contact them, taking field trips is extremely difficult and paperwork changes often and is confusing, administrators are using the state's budget crisis to move people out

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport your staff, follow your own rules and help find and elect a board with good conscious and a backbone
