I have been working at Dallas Independent School District part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You can choose when and where you want to work. You can even pick up jobs on the morning of the day you want to work. It's all computerized.

    Cons

It you get at a school where the leadership us not strong, it can be very, very stressful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Substitutes really should get paid better as every day is like the first day of school for them. I love when I have a class for long term, as the kids get to know what you expect.

Former Employee - Teacher, Department Head, Coach in Dallas, TX

I worked at Dallas Independent School District full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

DISD has amazing students, and I believe they have the right leadership in place now. The district suffered previously from some corrupt leaders. Excellent growth opportunities if you network and lead your students to gains.

    Cons

Long hours if you do your job right, but the children make it worth it. Pay for performance money began to run out, and I do not know where they stand on this now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure your principals are ethical people motivating their staff in the right ways. Teachers like clear expectations and transparent leadership.

    Dallas ISD substitute

Former Employee - Substitute Teacher in Dallas, TX
Former Employee - Substitute Teacher in Dallas, TX

I worked at Dallas Independent School District part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The school system was very helpful in guiding me to potential positions and was overall a great experience. Compensations is mediocre but for someone struggling in this job market, it was nice to have a paycheck. Plus the kids!

    Cons

Classes were not given specific directions to go over with kids, while the classes themselves were poorly maintained. This is probably a product of poor educational finance issues more than the school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to be more proactive in making sure teachers let substitutes go over what they need to.
