Maybe an overall good company to work for, just not my restaurant.

    Bartender/Server (Former Employee)

Prosflexible hours, ability to make quick money

Consvery poor management whose incompetence was problematic to day to day operations, corporate culture that embraced cost-saving measures that directly impacted employee wages, (e.g. cutting busser and bartenders' hourly pay and compensating by implementing a mandatory, sales (not tip) based "tip-share", and value-based promotions that often involved much more labor on the part of hourly employees without adding to their compensation (e.g. AYCE shrimp and four-course meals)

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper level management should spend more time reconnecting with the operational aspect of the company. If the upper level managers observed first-hand the impracticality of many of their policies, as well as the deficiencies in their lower-level managers, I believe that many policies would be changed and appropriate candidates would sought to fill the restaurant level management positions.

    Sales Manager

    Sales Manager (Former Employee)

ProsThere are no pros with this company except maybe the Credit Union

Constoo many to list and they don't care when you do list them...they are too big to care...they just let good people quit because they know they can always sucker someone else...the turnover rate for managers with Darden is well over 30%...that should tell you something. Darden invests about $30000 to train a manager...its really irresponsible for them to just let it all go to waste.

Advice to Senior Managementbe careful to know what your managing partners are "really" like....when noone is watching.

    HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Server (Former Employee)
    Salina, KS

ProsThe opportunity to experience what a hostile work environment is truly like and to appreciate the opportunities that have presented themselves after experiencing this form of discrimination. The few and far between genuine and honest guests and relationships that were made. Wrongfully terminated and sued for unemployment AND WON!

Conswage theft, harassment, bullying environment, low class no class management and diners with an "entitlement" type attitude. Management does not and will not stick up for their servers.

Advice to Senior ManagementI won't waste precious airspace on the lowest form of human garbage that have been carelessly given any kind of "management" position. I now work the type of environment that if a guest mistreats or is a poor tipper, they will be asked by management to not return.

Trial policy will drop your wages 20%

    Server (Current Employee)
    Schaumburg, IL

ProsI love my co workers and schedules are very flexible.

ConsNew trial policy of a suggested tip before tax printed on the guests check is reducing server tips by 20%. This means server salary's have dropped by 20%. If they value us they will remove it. Our competitors that put a suggested tip on the check calculate after tax and show 18%,20% and 22% values.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave all management staff take a 20% pay cut.

Olive Garden Lost Sight of Who Makes Them A Success

    Bartender/Server (Former Employee)
    Fort Worth, TX

ProsGreat coworkers, friendly guests, nice atmosphere.

ConsOlive Garden treats their employees as if it were their first day on the job. Management is inconsistent and shows favoritism. 10 year+employee and I saw it all. Was good for many years but 2 years ago started spiraling down. Management never stands behind their employees. People with bad behavior/work issues were rewarded while those who were not were left by the wayside or smart enough to get out. Olive Garden is in the business of giving away everything for free should a guest complain. They can do this because they pay their employees a substandard wage. Granted most front of the house people make tips, not all do, and those that do are often "stiffed" yet must still pay taxes on unearned income. I could write a thesis on Olive Garden's shortcomings but I can spend my time in a more productive endeavor.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can begin by telling your employees "thank you" for a job well done, rather than harassing them during TIP(talk into position) over issues like guest counts or matters that are out of our hands entirely. Stand behind your employees and make them want to come to work. We're on the front lines and the guests see us first. If we've already been beaten down before we get our first table or before the doors are open, it will reflect in the guests experience. Pay your employees what they're worth. Two or so years ago Olive Garden cut the pay of bartenders and bussers from their previous wages to $5.00 per hour. This was the beginning of the end for Olive Garden. You get what you pay for. After the cut in wages I saw the decline in morale escalate exponentially. While management and corporate continued to receive their usual income the people who make it all possible continue to struggle and then hourly employees had their hours cut to save on labor costs. Stop hiring new employees when those who work there can't even get enough hours to make ends meet. Doing so would help you with your high turnover rate.
