    Pros

The reputation for a collegiate work environment and rewarding, cutting edge work is well deserved. DPW is also becoming a leader in compensation.

    Cons

In the litigation department, slim to no long term advancement opportunities; no transparency or guidance as to promotion decisions

    Pros

People are friendly, office is nice, support staff are helpful, resources are amazing.

    Cons

Biglaw is biglaw; the firm owns you, and while they're nice about it, don't expect clear boundaries between your time and theirs.

    Advice to Management

Law needs to find a way to treat its lawyers like people with needs for independent, non-work time on a more regular basis than four weeks of vacation a year.

    Pros

The environment is highly intellectual, which makes it interesting to work in and the people employed by DPW are great to learn from. I find the cafeteria to be a plus (the breakfast is top-notch).

    Cons

The hours can be quite long and unpredictable, but that's as expected, given the nature of the work. Sometimes the work/life balance is a bit difficult.

    Pros

People treat you with respect and make a real effort to avoid needless late night and weekend work, firm morale is very high, consensus is that the firm is headed in the right direction and expanding strategically both from a practice area perspective and geographically. Vacation time is absolutely sacred and everyone takes all 4-5 weeks.

    Cons

Hours can be long and very unpredictable, but this is the nature of the industry. Not a lot of firm-wide events, would be nice to have some more opportunities for social interaction with colleagues.

  9. One of the best places to work in Big Law. But you're still working in biglaw.

    Pros

The best reason to work at Davis Polk is the people. People are (generally) kind and interested in getting the work done, not interested in embarrassing one another or being rude.

    Cons

Because people are kind, they often fail to give good feedback for fear of being rude. Also, working in big law is crappy, no matter what firm you work at. Davis Polk is the best of a bad bunch.

    Advice to Management

Management doesn't need my advice, the firm is very well run. Big law is probably in for a decline in the coming years but DPW management is very good and the firm will weather the decline better than most.

    Pros

Highly professional and brilliant lawyers across the board. Don't think you'll find any other law firm with a deeper bench and that will give associates as much responsibility so early in their careers.

    Cons

The hours can be long and communication about partnership prospects can be opaque.

    Pros

The people are great. Everyone is exceptionally smart and dedicated to their work. Some might see big law firms as being terrifying places where everyone is out to make a buck and move up the ladder and, although that may be some peoples intention, everyone is a team-player and wonderful to work with.

    Cons

I find that the firm's ability to train its' staff and incoming interns, associates, employees, etc on the technical programs and procedures of the company--which can be stifling.
