    Pros

    Technology company, location, work culture, nice people, great market positioning

    Cons

    DT has many parts, formerly independent companies now LOBs within Dealertrack. Each one is different and the work experience differ greatly by location.

    Some locations ( see Dealer.Com ) are much more like "technical company" where the programmers and the engineers rule.

    Some locations ( see Headquarters ) run more like a bank where the business would gladly outsource the whole shebang someplace if they could get away with it.

    Some other locations ( Sacramento ) are not that good at all, toxic culture, a lot of bitter and disappointed people
    In addition to typical growing pains

    Advice to Management

    This is a technology company where a lot of people do not realize that this is in fact a technology company. Promote engineering culture

    Pros

    The people are very friendly and welcoming, and strive to build a culture and be inclusive. Great business model; very visionary and very clear who their target customer is and how their products solve their problems. The sales team is a very happy group.

    Cons

    Infrastructure is a mess, with multiple systems and very little technical support. Internal resources are designed without user feedback. Systems are implemented that do not communicate with one another, leaving users to create workarounds. Silos abound and priorities shift often. Getting traction for projects and collaboration is difficult. People have great intentions, but true collaboration is difficult because the most senior leaders are not aligned in their mission and strategy. Accountability is low.

    Advice to Management

    Get senior leaders in alignment and hold them accountable for results. Request employee feedback and listen to it. Integrate the multiple cultures before the natural synergy is lost. Instruct IT on what a user story is.

    Pros

    There are a few things that are great about thus company. One is the dress code. It is very relaxed so the team members are comfortable. The other is the flexibility of scheduling.

    Cons

    There isn't much room for advancement unless you are gossip partners with the manager and supervisors. There is a lot of favoritism especially when the upper management "needs a favor" to bail them out. Family members of the executive (VP) get special treatment and aren't held to the same standard as everyone else. Internet usage (outside of job description) isn't allowed for privacy reasons (completely understandable) but the family members can shop while on conference calls? If the company is supposed to be one Dealertrack then all team members need to be held at the same standard. Don't create an exception based on the position or relationship. Better pay would be ideal. Minimum wage and less than 35 hours per week doesn't allow people to live, it only allows them to help get by week to week. We are broke from paycheck to Monday. Help those who line your pockets with bonuses and six figure salaries.

    Advice to Management

    Look at your employees and see where they can be better utilized. The pay needs to be adjusted drastically. Not all department's have the same work criteria therefore pay shouldn't be either.

    Pros

    The work-like balance and benefits are good. Corporate has a great vision of the type of employer and company Dealertrack should be.

    Cons

    The corporate vision is not applied at the business unit level. At other locations, professionals are not treated as such. They are required to leave coats, purses, etc. in small lockers or in their vehicle. Restrooms are on the "secure" side of the facility, making discrete transport of personal items to the restroom difficult if not impossible. Manager level independent contributors work in call center and production environments where it is very loud and difficult to concentrate.

    Advice to Management

    I recommend that Mark O'Neil ensure his vision is executed in all locations. I recommend personally visiting sites and interviewing employees. You lost this employee due to local culture and environment. Also, it should be required that Directors/Managers with direct reports visit the team members at their location for a minimum of 16 days a year, sitting in the cube farm! Please also not safety items.

    Pros

    Stable and growing!
    Has the resources to acquire what the company needs to reach it's goal.
    Leading the way in it's industry.

    Cons

    Due to aggressive company acquisitions over a short period of time, there is a lack of cohesiveness from department to department or from location to location.
    No opportunities to feed back ideas or innovations from the bottom to the top.

    Advice to Management

    Find out what talent you have acquired and help them find the proper position, title or team to best utilize their talents. Don't let them die on the vine.

    Pros

    industry leading company. Opportunity for movement both laterally, and upwardly. competitive salary in relation to industry standards. solid atmosphere depending on department.

    Cons

    company absolutely doesn't seem to know where it wants to go. convoluted directives that has various parts of the organization working in silos. Product development is very rarely inclusive of those in which industry knowledge can be leveraged. Which ends up harming the final result of said product. Competitors are capitalizing on this and the gap is shortening...quickly.

    Pros

    Company is firmly established as a one-stop shop for automotive retailing software. Anyone who buys a car today in the US or Canada will most likely use their software or services. The company's CEO is vertical integration wizard practicing A&D (Acquire and Develop) to really deliver value to shareholders and customers. From a high-level view this company is poised for exciting growth over the next few years.The acquisition of Dealer.com should help increase the company's bottom line. Work/life balance is a great benefit of working here. The work environment is good and will get better with a new state-of-the art facility being built nearby.

    Cons

    The current management system is an antique of the last century. Acquired companies get wrapped up in red tape and a lot of the company's net income has been been re-invested in non-value producing positions that increase bureaucracy and impede future growth. Generally, the company's internal management is risk averse and most people work in silos. Trust is a big issue with management describing itself as 'needs improvement but above industry average.' This is a terrible admission of settling for mediocrity. Many managers were promoted from the tech ranks and do not have proper training to be good managers. Location of the office is an issue because of it's proximity to New York City where most of the technology talent the company needs prefers to work.

    Advice to Management

    1) Required reading:
        a -- Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg's book "How Google Works"
        b -- Eric Ries' book "Lean Startup"
    2) Hire the best people. Take pains in doing so.
    3) Empower the best people you hire and get out of their way.
    4) Trim out waste and promote those who can lead and serve effectively.

    Pros

    Always busy, never any downtime. Room to move up, if you're willing to work.

    Cons

    Terrible insurance plan and pay was not proportionate to the work.

    Advice to Management

    Must get a better insurance plan.

    Pros

    People are great. Company is growing. The culture has gotten very lax. No real dress code as long as you don't push it.

    Cons

    Company is on an acquisition tear. Potential for advancement seems harder with each acquisition b/c of role "alignment". Benefits are not as good as you would think for such a large company.

    Pros

    Good benefits. Relaxed, casual atmosphere. Great coworkers. Pretty flexible with hours. If your field is not technologically based I would recommend Dealertrack.

    Cons

    Dealertrack is not a technology company. They acquire technology companies. Technological decisions are made by management and not by the engineers. Bad practices/solutions will be decided on by management and will be implemented by technology, Not a fun place if you like being creative or designing the best solutions.

    Advice to Management

    Leave the engineering to the engineers.
