Deb has been going through some major operational changes since october of 2013 since the new CEO has taken over.

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time for more than 3 years

ProsIt can be fun and challenging at times, it sells a great product to a great customer base

ConsThe current operational (promos, visuals, markdowns, payroll budget) changes are sometimes poorly planned so you end up working almost 50 hours while you are salaried which takes away from your personal life. There is a lack of DM longevity. I have worked for the company for almost 3 years and only had a DM for 1 year of that.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe prepared to work at least a min of 44 hours up to 70 in order to get all the operational tasks done in a week.

Hectic stressful chaotic!

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time for more than a year

ProsPeople whom you work with. Everyone strives to do their best and wants to reach goals or standards set.

ConsConstantc change in standards, day to day. What is ok on one dm visit will not ok by another. No consistency. No rhyme or reason for rules or visual standards or changes to them. Upper management not only is on different pages but in different books. Benifits are costly. Constant schedule changes because of last minute floor changes or markdowns or other random non-customer service oriented activities.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure it out before the ship sinks, we all know its flooded on the lower level. You have many passionate ememployees, show appreciation for long term ones. Most of what your trying to change or introduce has been done before.

Been in the business for a long time hoping for change, but not much changes yet.

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time

Prosemployees get 40% discount on clothes

ConsVery stressful, because they expect you to be able to do everything
High turnover! Lots of changes in upper managers constantly and associates.
Raises sucks. Sales and priorities always are changing, they can never make up mind on what sale to do, or figuring out priorities.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease give more higher raises! Don't be afraid to get rid of incompetent people including management.

Horrible Horrible experience

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time for less than a year

ProsHonestly the only thing good was the pay but it's not worth giving your life up for it.

ConsThe hours are horrible, I was required to work 44 min a week but I ended up working anywhere from 50-70 hrs a week! Upper management is horrible, I had extreme customer issues and had no backing from my DM, RM or corporate office. Also crazy human resource issues, like no breaks and working multiple opening to closing shifts in a week or my personal favorite, only getting one day off a week....

Scheduling with this store is a joke. They really don't follow a payroll matrix and you are mostly on a two person coverage even though I was over a T60 store (aka part of their highest shrink program) and I was in a high volume store. (And they wonder why they have a high shrink....)

Overall being pulled in a million different directions...There is no cohesive trend to the clothing styles and they push trends that are not current. Multiple customers would love to inform me that they should really stick to just dresses (Not gonna lie I have to agree with them!)

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to hire quality people who know what they are doing. I had more retail experience than my DM did and it really showed. The DM belittled my staff and treated everyone like they were not valued and always replaceable. (Doesn't make for the most welcoming and motivating atmosphere)

Also, need to really think about what direction they are going and really work on their policy and procedures....I have never ever worked for a company that was so vague on policies and had no reference binder set for employees. I had an ASM who had been with the company over 2 years and had no idea what some policies were... like you are required to take a 30 min break if working over 6 hours at a time.... Completely inexcusable and no one is there to enforce it....

I wouldn't recommend applying.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Plainfield, IN

I have been working at Deb Shops part-time for less than a year

Pros-The discount is pretty great if you like the clothes.
-In-store employees tend to be agreeable, personally adore my manager but that is for this store
-The work isn't terrible. Unboxing clothes is actually pretty relaxing.

Cons-The pay is terribly for the work you have to do.
-Expected to do the work of five employees all at once.
-Two people in the store is not enough to get everything done that is expected, even when it isn't busy.
-There is a constant feeling of distress that your job may be at risk.
-DM's show obvious favoritism and nepotism. They recently appointed an employee at our store and told her to have all her friends apply despite the fact that we have no job slots available. Essentially, they were told to find our replacements.
-Even if you accomplish everything you need to in the store, you will be berated by upper management that you did everything wrong, despite following everything to a T (not the store managers mind you. They are essentially doing your job with you)
-Schedules are never approved by upper management and they change them on a whim. This makes it difficult to know when you should be there. I've had hours randomly cut or tacked onto my shift.
-They don't care about you. Period, end of story. You are considered an all-purpose tool, and they will frequently use their screwdrivers as hammers.

-We were also told during inventory that we were not allowed to take breaks, talk, get a drink and/or food, or go to the bathroom for 7 hours straight. They were not kidding. I wish there was a way to bold this.

Advice to Senior Management-Become more empathetic towards your employees.
-Replace your DM's with people that are capable of the job and know how to handle interpersonal relations properly, or you are looking at several thousand human resources lawsuits. Being told we are not allowed to use the restroom is not only unethical, but also illegal.

LOVE IT!

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time for less than a year

ProsThe company is in the midst of a turn around/rebrand and there is not one new decision that the company has made that I disagree with. I have great communication with my DM and can see myself staying with the company for a very long time! It is a challenging environment that constantly keeps you on your toes and develops your strengths and weaknesses as a manager. Once you are able to staff your store yourself, it is a very fun work environment! You get a great discount and they run special employee appreciation days with even greater employee discounts from time to time and offer a GREAT bonus incentive program....better than any other retailer I have worked for in the past.

DM's...mine is absolutely amazing. She knows how to show you just the right amount of support and allows you to "own" your business as a manager.

Any time I have put in a work order, supply order, or needed to receive pay for travel expenses, etc...it has all been done in a VERY TIMELY MANNER. I can reach anyone at corporate with a single phone call and get any question answered and/or problem resolved...GREAT COMMUNICATION.

It's honestly a very exciting time at Deb Shops, Inc and I am very happy that I decided to become apart of the Deb Shops team....I expect great things to come of this company.

ConsPayroll-who wouldn't want more?
SM's are expected to work A LOT of hours...hard to maintain good work-life balance.
Allocation & Distribution-I don't need 10 runs of the same top in 10 different colors that don't sell to my customer...I have seen improvement in this department.
Visual Integrity-They have implemented new visual standards which are great...need to create visual accountability to new standards however. And spend some money REMODELING the stores....I expect to see a lot of remodeling in the near future and better real estate in higher profile malls and shopping centers however.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue with the new philosophy's of the company and allow yourself to CHANGE WITH THE COMPANY. Also, pave ways for advancement for those of us who are pursuing a CAREER rather than just working a job. Invest more money in internal candidates. IT TAKES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY.

Discrimination against black and plus size employees

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)
Grapevine, TX

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time for more than a year

ProsGood discounts on poorly made clothing . Good lower level staff

ConsHigh turn over, company frowns upon plus employees and very discriminatory toward blacks and Hispanic employees. They sell plus size clothing but what their image to not be plus size only juniors. The DM sucks you never can get in touch with her until she wants you too. If you're gay/lesbian they don't want that as their image either . The pay sucks for all the work you do. Upper management is horrible and they have one black employee but that's only for show.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you have good people in you shouldn't be worried about their color or weight.

No such thing as common sense

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time

ProsOnce you build a stable and enjoyable team, it can be a fun place to work with enjoyable coworkers.
40% discount

Consbudgets cut tremendously
not enough payroll to cover the store
forcing employees to work under unsafe conditions
scolding those who speak out against the unsafe conditions
underpaid
poor communication from home office
unproductive tasks
high stress levels

Advice to Senior ManagementThis company sets you up for failure so that they do not have to pay you and bonuses/raises. They take overworked and underpaid to a new level. Expectations are not clearly laid out, and then you are penalized for their lack or organization later. Anyone can say they are turning over a new leaf, but it is the actions that define that.

Horrible company to work for, Even worse environment to work in.

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Deb Shops full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe employee discount is decent.

ConsHR/Payroll;
Turnover rate company wide is is very high. Employees are not valued and are treated as "dime a dozen". Expected floor coverage vs. payroll given is unrealistic on the weekdays. You receive emails from DM scolding you for not using all of your payroll one week (when it is not needed) and doing the same when you go 1hr over when needed.

You do not receive additional support from upper management to ensure you staff your store successfully during a tough time.
Getting an open position posted is very difficult.

RM's/DM's are only for the company for a few years and then move on to something better.
DM's gossip to everyone who will listen. i.e. who stole what, who is being investigated, who she is trying to fire.

Upper Management;
DM is not involved at store level and threatens Store Management jobs when DM is under "hot water". Managers are not allowed to take vacation time around any holiday but corp. office and RM/DM's are off every Holiday. DM's and RM's are so extremely tough to speak to. I have personally overheard my DM take personal phone calls on her company phone and ignore calls from stores to talk about "dinner and drinks later?".

I don't see this company standing in 2 years. They should have used the "revise" to get their priorities straight instead of opening new stores that are just going to close next year.

Personally, working for this company was the worst decision I have made.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe new CEO needs to take a closer look at the DM's workload and how they contribute to their team. Sending job threatening emails and text messages are unprofessional and in no way will motivate staff/management, this causes an immediate shut down.
Value your employees you currently have. Especially those who stuck it out during bankruptcy. Make frequent pop-ins to ensure your RM's/DM's and stores are performing and providing "Positive Feedback".
Another big tip; Take care of your stores appearance. When a store looks like it is closing because of poor upkeep it will lose business for good.
