This was such a great place to work before they announced the shutdown.

    Lean Line Assembler (Former Employee)

ProsThey really treated their employees well... even the contract/temporary employees (which is rare for most companies). I was a contract/temporary employee for almost a year. They had awesome employee moral. During the end of the quarter, they would treat their employees to a meal coupon and snacks coupons for their cafeteria. The management that I dealt with (team leaders and their managers) were great. They were always willing to help and offered excellent training. They weren't afraid to come down on the floor and work along side those of us on the floor. Their facility was SO nice!! I have never worked at such a clean, safe facility!

ConsThey had a lot of overtime... lots of 12 hour shifts with 5-7 day work weeks. Although it doesn't apply to me, I heard that some people were not happy with how the shut down was announced and/or how the layoffs were executed.

Advice to Senior ManagementCome back to North Carolina! ;-)

Dell was a fun place to work with a customer base that took me everywhere.

Outside Sales Specialist II (Current Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsCustomer base, compensation, cache of Dell, they gave us most everything we would need to be successful in the job.

ConsThe synergies were lacking because the teams that you were supporting had too many things in the bag to sell. Selling at Dell is a team sport. You can't go it alone and with little focus by means of compensation to the Core Team, your product can easily fall to the bottom of the bag.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Core Teams should have a quota or be spiffed for everything that Dell sells so that everyone can have success.

Dell is a great career builder with great opportunities.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsWith Dell I worked in multiple areas and expanded my knowledge of supply chain systems. It gave me the opportunity to explore all aspects from pricing and procurement, through the manufacturing floor applications and processes and logistics and distribution. I also had the pleasure to expand my expertise into infrastructure and eventually emerging technologies.

ConsI grew up thinking if you worked hard you were rewarded both monetarily and with promotions. Dell pays great and as a high performer I was paid well and had a great work life balance. However as with many large companies you must also be savvy and manage the political landscape just as much as you manage your work. If you fail to do that you will stagnate.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the development of people is truly important, start using the tools that have been available for years such as the Individual Development Plans. Hold the managers accountable to review these with the employees. Make them usefull. There is still not a good system in place.
