ProsCompany culture - promotes working from home, and even allows this during busy season; Love my co-workers

ConsLong hours during busy season; Evaluation system doesn't really allow differentiation between employees, so people are less motivation to work hard; Don't think we are compensated enough for all the hours we put in

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the evaluation and goal hour system so that people who are efficient and work hard will be compensated, or else they will just leave

Great for learning, great for leaving.

ProsIn the fire, you learn to learn fast. Your co-workers are pretty sharp, and everyone is highly motivated, which can be invigorating.

ConsYou've got to be reasonably sharp, but that won't stop you from getting tired. Average weeks are 55 hours; busy season weeks can average 70.

    Deloitte Audit Senior Assistant

    Audit Senior (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

    ProsPractical experience
Exposure to accounting issues, guidance, and wide knowledge base.
    Great people.
Good benefits relative to other big four accounting firms.
Some flexibility on remote work and unassigned time.
$5K bonus for passing the CPA.
25 days PTO and 10 Holidays is pretty good for time off.
They match up to $500 in fitness expenditures every year. This allows you to buy fitness equipment cheaply.

ConsConfusing and counter productive performance management.
Difficultly managing ones career, ie getting on important client.
    Constant silent lay offs
    Poor work life balance
    Stale, uninspiring leadership
Poor advancement opportunities, no one makes partner anymore, so you would have to be Jesus or leave at some point anyway.
Talent is silo-ed such that you practically never meet or work with people from different functions, and transferring is close to impossible
Pay and raises are practically insulting, barely matching inflation (outside of promotion years)
Managers in the audit practice are either the superstars who expect too much or the under achievers who are hanging on because they are afraid to try something outside of their comfort zone. Either way, many managers here are difficult to work with.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop promoting people in classes, promote people based on experience and value added. Accordingly, there needs to be a better way to assess talent and reward it. Give people the courtesy of a hint, or counsel them out, do not blind side people with lay offs, it destroys any loyalty surviving employees have to the company. People get laid off based on how individual offices/regions are doing so why are ratings determined (usually to the detriment) at national? Seems unfair. Think about letting people stay at home when they are unassigned, its green and it will be better for your servers to avoid all that Netflix travel. Internal firm economics are useless, there are teams where people are working 90 hour weeks and there maybe 300 staff hours weekly sitting un-utilized at the office. Those unassigned staff are collecting paychecks, why not use them. Its good to be able to compare managers and engagements, but at a certain point, you need to take a step back. Are you really doing anyone a favor by letting one staff burn out and another watch 40 hours worth of reality shows at the office, just because you don't want to give you a charge code. This needs to be reworked.

Great 1st job out of college, excellent hands on experience

    Audit Manager (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsIf you can get on the firm's best clients, you will learn a lot and get exposure to talented senior professionals both at the firm and on the client side.

ConsTerrible hours, Terrible pay. After a few years (2-3) leave for a better work/life balance and better pay. Its unfortunate, but all big 4 accounting firms have the reputation for over working and under paying their people. Perhaps that is part of their business model or else everyone would stay.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe monetary difference between performance ratings is less than 100 bucks on a biweekly basis, that only disenfranchises and disincentives people. If you are going to use a performance rating system, compensation should be meaningfully different between rankings.

    Great Benefits but Bad Leadership

    Solutions Architect (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsGreat salary and benefits. Probably a good place to start your career... then its easier to navigate through the company.

ConsVery cut-throat leadership. People are used and tossed very easily. Not a good work/life balance. Emphasis is on getting billable hours in as opposed to gaining valuable skills and focus on customer quality. Technical skills are not valued. So perhaps a great company for people who are interested in business development and marketing. Stay clear if you have technical skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to figure out whether they want consultants focused on selling or technical people who actually have skills.
