Mostly nice people, but crappy talent retention, evaluation system, and projects, and you always feel like a resource

I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I am referring to Deloitte Consulting - S&O only. Compensation is quite good, and even better if you do the summer with the firm during your MBA (firm will pay for your second year tuition). Perks like any consulting firm.

    Cons

I am referring to Deloitte Consulting - S&O only. Projects are not aligned with interests. Many jerk partners, although it really varies - some are absolutely great. Talent management, retention, etc. is completely screwed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am referring to Deloitte Consulting - S&O only. Rethink EVERYTHING regarding talent management, compensation, evaluation system etc. It is so bad that it is embarrassing that a consulting firm does so badly internally.

I worked at Deloitte full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I worked with some great minds, and every once in a while got to work on a great project with great leadership

    Cons

When things were not so great - it was very bad. As a designer I don't like being asked to work for fast food companies, or other "bad for your neighborhood" kind of companies. Be it predatory lenders or global corporations responsible for massive oil spills I found my self in many morally compromising situations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While I had some awesome managers, when they were not so great it was also very bad. Be prepared to work on the weekend after putting in 60 hour weeks. The type of manager that asks their employee to do that should be fired, but they are rewarded. In my 3 years there the company changed a lot and it is because of Deloitte management, and the up or out philosophy Deloitte has. This is par for the course in the business world, but it is not a health environment for creative types.

    A tough place to work

I worked at Deloitte full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay is good (though I always figured that they had to have good pay to attract anyone), there are good time off policies (but can you *really* take uninterrupted time off?), and there's flexibility to work from home, which is great.

    Cons

Difficult to achieve work/life balance. Closed doors and lots of conference calls. I worked for Services. I can only imagine how tough it is to be one of the young auditors or consultants.

I worked at Deloitte full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Deloitte will give you a lot of chances to grow. It will allow you to try new things and expand your skills. They will teach you how to manage protects and people. You will be exposed to tried and tested methodologies.

    Cons

You will work long hours. You will be expected to do all training and mandatory activities on your personal time. You will be given tasks at the last minute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more realistic with your time estimates.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Deloitte is a great resume builder. You will make great network of professionals, and work on the biggest clients around the world. Good flexibility in terms of moving around physically (not always organizationally).

    Cons

Will get worked to death. They don't really care if you leave, they will just find another person to replace you - this is their business model and they know they can get away with it. Compensation is OK, and will reward high performers. If you are not the best of the best expect to be disappointed every year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Tell it to your employees straight - the smart people don't appreciate all the BS.

Generally good document reviews, especially larger reviews, but can vary drastically.

Former Employee - Document Reviewer in Jersey City, NJ

I worked at Deloitte as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Generally well supervised with full training for each project. Experienced fellow reviewers and team leaders. Some long-term projects as well as short-term ones; Location in Jersey City can be reached by public transportation.

    Cons

Salary is low, $29/hour with no overtime increase. Some of the supervisory personnel appear to want to intimidate people. One project poorly run by staff attorney from a law firm with document reviewers leaving/fired and new staff hired every few months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you see frequent document reviewer turn-over on a project, find out what is wrong with the project.

    Pros

Good teamwork on engagements, You can learn some good skills, good salary

    Cons

Partners own the company and run wild. I have worked with partners who break rules at will and will try and fire you for being ethical. I worked for them for 8 years and saw good employees leave constantly. In fact the turnover rate is VERY high. I worked in a division where several of my peers did not perform the minimum qualifications and were promoted. I did very well for quite a few years but eventually could not take it anymore.

Current Employee - Tax Consultant II in San Diego, CA

I have been working at Deloitte full-time

    Pros

Deloitte has the best benefits and perks of any company out there. In the next twos years or so, the San Diego office is looking at downsizing their current small office and having more people work from home exclusively which is a huge plus.

    Cons

Bad management in GES department. Department is too small for any real growth. Expect to remain a senior for 5-6 years. Current senior managers are either too busy to help in developing staff or don't like you personally and could care less about your career. Senior managers and managers hoard work and don't delegate down so micromanagement is high and extreme. The attitudes of certain senior managers have completely changed they way I view the company which is not good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed the current senior managers out and replace with some fresh managers with progressive thought whom everyone enjoys to be around. Management sets the tone for the group and right now the group sucks.

I worked at Deloitte full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Wonderful people, great technology & support, community involvement, fairly good "thank you" system if rewards in place.

    Cons

Totally awful compensation for Services employees. No possibility for advancement in Services. I was offered several jobs with Consulting that fell through for one reason or another, nothing to do with Me, I was assured. Treated very shabbily as a long-term employee. They gave me no choice but to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your people. An employee who's been there for almost 15 years with excellent ratings deserves a raise every year. When you make promises, follow through.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Learn alot about current technologies
    - Hands on in all phases of the SDLC
    - Experience gives you a phenomenal resume
    - You have a lot of celebration dinners

    Cons

    - You never see friends or family
    - Have to work holidays (and do not get a bonus for it)
    - Project Associates do more than Consultants but get no credit or financial rewards
    - If you become good at something you are expected to work at all hours of the day to meet the projects needs
    - Baseline hours become 60 -70 hours a week
    - If you want a raise you have to threaten to quit or have a job offer
    - Attrition

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Increase the pay of employees who work hard, have a high business/client value, and who fixed complex system issues.
    - Promote an environment where employees who are not travelers can see their friends and family regularly
    - Have bonuses for individuals who work holidays.
    - Listen to employees who are asking for more money.
