    I worked at Deloitte full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    The ability to go to develop your presence internally and externally is a change especially if coming from industry where you have micro-management. There is lots of eager people, all willing to help and partners/directors supporting you, however. The working environment is really cool in London, the amenities are great. There are great opportunities to travel to meet clients. Challenging variety of projects not just in your industry who know so well, but for clients in other industries. This gives you breadth of experience which you would not get being in industry. Self development is left entirely up to you, and there are loads of courses to help you. You get to experience what and how consultancies operate in the market.

    Cons

    The people in the organisation have a huge ego, more prevalent in the younger generation (and even directors/partners) who have this notion that with little knowledge they know more than you with decades worth of valuable real-life industry experience. This I found is the nub of the organisation the lack of industry expertise. It is all a front of "we know this" and "we can do this" and so forth but lack the substance of "how to do it". It is a blame culture, and a very clicky environment. I found this off-putting especially when the focus should be in helping clients, leveraging invaluable experience and skills which is overlooked in favour of selling something which the client thought they are getting but actually didn't. They harp on how well they have delivered to clients, but not one comment from the client whether they were satisfied or not. My experience of talking to a client, was they were not. It is front, even down to how individuals look. The old cliche of "face-fits" well this place is just that with a dusting of ostracism. The final comment is for those considering moving from industry to consultancy, especially Deloitte, simply don't unless it is money motivated and even then it will be short-lived.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Remove the stigma and improve the culture rather than selling pretty people with no real skills and experience. Clients want problems solved.

    I worked at Deloitte full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good contacts; good colleagues; changes to work on a wide range of projects.

    Cons

    Expectations of unsociable hours; no work-life balance; very difficult to work through promotions at higher levels unless you can pull strings; extremely political and back-stabbing atmosphere; basically no bonus scheme since partners are overpaid - and yet are the reasons for the poor working environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You need to seriously look at the reward structure - either increasing salaries and particularly bonuses, or reducing the expectations of hours. Someone paid £70,000 should not need to bring in £800,000 of work just to break even - the overheads are extraordinary, and much of that is partner profits.

    I have been working at Deloitte full-time

    Pros

    Good for the CV.
    Training is good for technical and soft skills.
    Good exposure to some big clients.

    Cons

    Culture is harsh, dog-eat-dog! A lot of backstabbing and petty behaviour from people who will stomp on anyone to try to get promoted. It's uncertain whether you will get a trustworthy manager or not, there are way too many nasty people at this level lacking people skills. Anyone with enough intelligence and sense leaves for something better.

    You are just a resource.

    Expect to be in the office until 8pm+ and scorned at if you leave at a reasonable hour. It is expected that you "Become the brand", give up your social life and work like a dog for this corporate machine.

    Salary is rubbish when the working hours are taken into account.

    Promotions are rare.

    Bonuses are rubbish.

    I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    They hire smart, fun and social people into the graduate scheme. Lots of social events. Work hours aren't all that bad (9 to 7 is pretty standard). Opportunities for travel. Easy-going work atmosphere in the office.

    Cons

    Most projects are long, dull, dull, dull and do not require any particular intellectual skills. Analyst alignment process is chaotic and unfair at best, and dishonest at worst. Meritocracy does not exist, at least at lower levels. Don't expect anyone to care about your interests or experience despite whatever you've been told during recruitment. Lots of politicking and/or luck required if you want to work in a certain area or on a certain client. Leadership is seen with a lot of distrust. Low morale amongst the analyst cohort - talking about qutting is a popular activity. Pay is nothing to brag about either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I expected better management from a company that thinks of itself as a top-tier management consultancy.

    Pros

    Year group socials events and activities.

    Cons

    No work/life balance. Constant overtime with no compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Respect your greatest asset - the staff. In turn the best staff will stay instead of leaving as is the norm.

    I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Considerable variety of work. Ability to work with intelligent skilled people.

    Cons

    Long hours, lots of stress and very poor bonuses. Certainly not a long term option unless you make it to partner where the real money kicks-in. I would suggest working in investment banking if you want the best return for your hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Encourage staff to leave at a reasonable hour. How can you expect anyone to have a decent quality of life doing 15 hour days & regular weekends?

    I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    If you are doing well (performance at lower grades, sales at higher grades) you tend to be left to your own devices to manage your career.

    Quality of people, generally better than the other top 4 firms.

    You are not automatically pigeon holed. There is an ability to shift competences and even service lines if you have the will

    Cons

    The culture has changed significantly over the past few years, mainly due to a change in leadership. It's all about sales and margin now. Whilst this was always the most important factor in this or any other professional services firm, it is to the compete detriment of everything else now.

    Pay bands are very narrow, unless you are a Partner.

    Partners quite simply take too much out of the business, probably double what is taken by other big 4 partners. This has an obvious impact on pay.

    Social events and training events are now non existent

    Morale is currently low. It feels churn and burn is now the buzzword.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get back to the culture we had 3-4 years ago. Deloitte is successful only because of the goodwill of its employees to go that extra mile. I am not sure there is much goodwill anymore.

    I have been working at Deloitte full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    * As you would expect, Deloitte goes a long way on a CV;
    * People are genuinely nice, especially at the lower levels;
    * High quality people;
    * The pay package is sufficient and better than average employer pension; and
    * Great training and experience.

    Cons

    * Hours are very long and management is slow to hire new individuals to share the workload;
    * There is definitely a clear focus on money over quality these days in my department;
    * Higher levels are too busy to actually manage projects well;
    * Breeds poor managers as the focus is on expertise rather than creating a high functioning team;
    * High turnover rate and overall a distinct feel of dissatisfaction within teams; and
    * Over emphasis over simple utilisation metrics which prove to be one-dimensional and create incentives for cutting time at the expense of quality and unrealistic time projections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on developing your people again and providing enough resources and the financials will follow. Until then, you're just going to bleed people and money.
