I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

26 years of employment before I had enough and jumped. Pay and benefits were decent. In it's day was an exciting place to work and grow your knowledge. Place you were proud to say you worked. I worked hard to get hired by Delco, worked hard throughout my career as a dedicated employee. NEVER expected to leave Delphi... Didn't realize how bad I despised what Delphi had become.

    Cons

High level management no longer valued people or experience of their senior engineers. Continual rounds of cuts just to make budget so exec's got their bonuses. People overloaded and worked 7 days a week on projects without pay over 40 hours because project managers agree to development schedules that are not achievable because they don't have a clue what work is involved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put management back in the hands of people that have a clue of engineering and design cycles. Realize it's the people that ultimately make the money. They deserve to be treated as human- not robots that have no life outside of work.

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of interesting projects to work on.

    Cons

Treated like a number. When quarterly results aren't good, management cuts expenses by getting together to decide who they can fire next. Older workers and those that are on sick or pregnancy leave are especially targeted. Management hides this by getting the workers to sign legal releases to prevent them from suing before they will give them any severance money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your older workers humanely. They have invested much of their lives to help out your company, and now that they are near retirement, you are dumping them on the job market at an age when they will have a difficult time finding another job. You expect loyalty from your employees yet you are not being loyal to them.

Severe "Brain Drain" Has Crippled Former Technology Powerhouse

I have been working at Delphi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the most brilliant engineers I've ever worked with until the company was taken over by the hedge fund owners. A technology leader that has fallen due to the exodus of the many of the most talented.

    Cons

Constant layoffs, forced retirements, continual salary and benefit cuts, terminated pension plan employees in their 40's and 50's with huge losses to make up in the short time remaining before retirement. Horrible Morale due to employees being viewed as disposable liabilities. Systematically bleeding US locations to death while moving the work offshore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your attitude toward your workforce. Morale will not improve until they see that you have a plan to grow the company and value the contributions of a talented workforce.

    Systemically unethical.

I have been working at Delphi full-time

    Pros

Loving home for people of mediocre education with poor grammar.

    Cons

Systemically unethical. Very top-down, poor management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Having already been bankrupt, time to clean up your integrity issues with management and handling of subordinates. Inadequate oversight down the chain. Instead of part of the solution HR is also part of the problem.

    Pros

A funded paycheck. If you are bored, you will spend all your waking moments doing what management thinks is important.

    Cons

Employees are simply a means for the owners and executives to line their pockets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees like assets, not dirt.

Not a stable place to work, and employees are not respected!

Former Employee - Engineer - Power Electronics in Kokomo, IN
Former Employee - Engineer - Power Electronics in Kokomo, IN

    I worked at Delphi full-time

    Pros

Good and highly experienced engineers, good pay.

    Cons

Power electronics projects are neat but need much better support from advanced engineering. Advanced engineering managers have no vision of what works and what doesn't and just act nice to keep their jobs. Production is always under pressure and the amount of work per engineer is unreasonable. Management recently laid off many engineers and Kokomo's workforce is shrinking but media is not talking about it! HR is not professional when dealing with employee issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management up from the CEO down to group managers should be changed. This change should include advanced engineering and HR of power electronics. The company needs fresh vision to succeed, and more respect to employees who are always worried about losing their jobs.

The company has lots of potential but projects are always driven in the wrong direction.

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Delphi is fortunate to have a lot of talented, hard working engineers and other professionals. Throughout Delphi’s extended bankruptcy, most employees continued to work hard and stay focused with good teamwork.

    Cons

Delphi uses strictly bottom line management. There appears to be no good vision for the company. Delphi lied to employees regarding pensions and health care. The standard contract with employees is now “day to day”.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep outsourcing your engineering and manufacturing and I think you will continue to struggle to maintain let alone grow market share. When you do things like have one of your vice presidents address an all employee meeting and state you will protect your employees’ pensions then dump the pension to the PBGC, you lose all credibility with your employees. The quality of your current employees is the only reason you are still in business at all. You need to work hard to regain their trust. It may be too late.

    Pros

Difficult to mention anything you could be proud of working for Delphi.

    Cons

Not a team culture. Individuals working for their personal benefit. Their are no entrepreneurs in this company. No culture of true business management. If your area of resposibility loses money and does not make budget, no problem, as long as you are on THE LIST.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The low approval rating of the CEO tells the whole story

I have been working at Delphi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good, intelligent co-workers. Some very intelligent people still employed there.

    Cons

Salary increases below industry average, when they are given at all. As of late, if you're over 50 years old look out- you are most likely to soon be looking for a new job (you are "too expensive" and may push insurance costs up due to your age)! Experience and performance don't seem to hold much weight; advanced degrees are given much more consideration. Not many new, exciting/interesting opportunities due to lost business and/or the inability to staff (or even quote) new business. Management is, most often, top down and their compensation is excessive given their performance and their ability to grow the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire; put new management in-place that can grow the business. Treat your employees better (compensation, their ideas/feedback) and stop treating them like human capital. Stop recruiting/hiring minorities with green cards that all too often do not "work out" and require too much time from experienced employees to train them. Make real investments to grow your existing employees instead of using them to train new and inexperienced employees (which may take the existing employee's job later!). Yes, we lower-level employees do see this and know what you are doing!
