    Good place to get experience

I worked at Delphi as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

My university was near a Delphi engineering center, so they put a lab in our research park to allow for electrical or computer engineering students to gain experience. I worked in that lab under a more senior engineer on a project. I gained a lot of experience with how projects flow in the automotive world. It also functioned as a sort of internship in the summer, which took a lot of stress off, as I was able to just stay in the same apartment and not have to worry about moving around the country for internships. The pay was also pretty good for a part time job, though a little lower than an internship opportunity would have been.

    Cons

The only issue I can think of is that because the lab I worked in was separate from the lab that the full time employees worked in, there could be a bit of a disconnect. But other than that everything was great.

I have been working at Delphi full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great team to work with. People are very smart and professional, and they treat me like family! The team is fairly small so there isn't much hierarchy. I got the freedom to solve problems my way and recommend them to the executive level and have my strategies implemented. And the pay was great! The job itself was also challenging and fun! Loved my job there! No complain!

    Cons

For the groups with a lot more people, things start to slow down, and you start becoming one of the "heads" just to get your job done everyday.

I worked at Delphi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good hours, can work overtime if you want, decent benefits. If you want to do something more in your position, you can sometimes find additional directions to move your resume into.

    Cons

Unless it's related directly to engineering for customers, internal processes are bureaucratic almost to a fault. Simple things can sometimes take forever to get through the system, if at all. Sometimes there can be too much emphasis on paperwork. Tried to donate stuff, but because of how it does its finances, it took two years for them to decide just to scrap the equipment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company has promise, but internal processes feel too much like trying to find fault where there isn't sometimes by calling it "ongoing improvement." Most people just want to work, and they often do their work well, making participation in certain programs a waste of time.

    I worked at Delphi

    Pros

As an intern I was given some of the most interesting and exciting projects, not only within the department I applied for. I got to work with interns and experienced colleagues from multiple corporate functions, had real responsibilities and handled cases that had real impact. It was invaluable exposure. The people I worked with were incredibly friendly, helpful, and competent, and I felt truly valued and appreciated for the work I was doing. Our manager and senior executives were also extremely approachable. They very often took time to guide our projects and sometimes had lunch with us to hear our professional interests. Overall, I felt very happy and fortunate that I took this internship. It was really a unique, unparalleled experience.

    Cons

At times cross organizational communication was lacking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to be open and receptive to interns and to prepare them for full-time positions at Delphi.
