I have been working at Deluxe Corporation full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good people who try hard
Good compensation
Lots of revenues from checks
People spend more when they call (heavy cross-selling) so online investments are poor
Marketing team is good at "one and done" deals that drive immediate sales
Brand team is all about "building the brand" (not demand)
Call centers drive all the revenue - people are not called "sales" but they do cross-sell and upsell and get $10 gift cards for doing so
Cons – Ask what the net promoter scores are for small business services - customers don't recommend/refer others and they don't want to keep buying
CEO is a bean counter. Culture is measure-measure-measure again... SOOOOOO many meetings and reports of what happened last week that it's hard to get anything done
Wrap crappy online services in the veneer of "work happy" marketing campaign
Acquire companies...can't figure out how to sew them together
Horrible back-end fulfillment and processes for creating small biz websites and handling SEM
Revolving door of executives brought in to "turn it around" and "get leads and sales"
Lots of silos that don't work together (call centers are king)
They try to drive the business forward by looking in the rear view mirror
Advice to Senior Management – Keep the cash cow checks business going
Focus on improving the quality of the product/services offered to small businesses for online marketing and then invest in sales/marketing to drive leads and sales. Learn from JC Penny where they focused on marketing "wrap" and not what was sold and the customer experience.
Measure success for small biz marketing services on customer sat, referral rates, net promoter scores (not just getting a lead or an initial purchase)

I worked at Deluxe Corporation as a contractor for less than a year
Pros – There isn't much of an IT market for Deluxe to sell to anymore, or in the future based on their strategic business direction. Hence this area of their business is drying up fast.
Cons – About 7 years ago, Deluxe outsourced all its IT (development, and internal infrastructure). Last year they began to take this back. Understandably, the foreign outsourced personal collectively resist this. And therefore, this company's IT is 'owned' by the outsourced personal since they maintain all the knowledge. Deluxe IT struggles to get back this control. If you want to work here in IT, prepare to get very involved in this.
Advice to Senior Management – Dump your IT leadership, they DO NOT have the competence to support an effective IT business direction, nor do they have the character to take back control of Deluxe IT.

I have been working at Deluxe Corporation full-time for less than a year
Pros – Good comp plan. Everyone who's not in management is fun to work with.
Cons – Meetings meetings meetings and more meetings. Spend more time in the conference room than you do actually on the phones making sales. Have a new manager that was given the position because of his friendship with the sales director.
They have your entire day mapped out via your calendar. Seems like they don't trust their sales reps to manage their time properly. Company had a record month, and instead of giving credit to reps, they create more meetings and add new technology that is supposed to help us manage our time better.
The back end is terrible. The product rarely does what is promised to clients. Constant billing issues that sales reps are responsible to fix. Customer service calls are routed to sales reps. Not sure if there is actually a real customer service department.
The current supervisor comes from a call center background and is turning this office into that. Management has 0 experience in outbound dialing and prospecting.
Advice to Senior Management – Quit and let qualified people have your positions.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Free checks
Great co-workers
Cafeteria on-site
Great PTO structure
Cons – Multiple layoffs every year
Inexperienced supervisors
Favoritism is rampant unfortunately
Outsourcing to save money
Advice to Senior Management – Go back to checks...you have the brand strength there - you took too big a leap with your small business offerings in the Deluxe name. Get rid of the consultants that don't have the experience to develop your programs. All they do is use bully tactics and outsource everything to cut costs. Nothing works as far as systems go and make team members jobs very difficult. You say the difference is Customer Service - it's not. Select services sold to customers are things that they can do for free!
If you are going to continue with the small business items, go back to the drawing board. Get real experts in there, utilize the companies you purchased and look at it from the Customer's perspective and offer services that are meaningful to them and their businesses. Deluxe was a great company who cared about it's employees and customers. I wish you future success by remembering how you got there in the first place.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time for less than a year
Pros – Many nice people that have worked there for a long time (10- 25 years).
Cons – Very low moral. Positions eliminated quarterly to help acheive profit goals.
Advice to Senior Management – Get a plan. I don't think they have a 1 year plan let alone a 5 year plan on how to evolve away from their shrinking check printing business.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time for more than a year
Pros – On the "face" company is headed in the right direction. They have incorporated many process improvements and cost savings. When I listened to their ads or Corporate messages, I thought, I want to work for "that" company. The reality at this site was far from the Corporate message.
Cons – Lack of respect for employee work/life balance.
Management disfunction
Constant struggle within leadership team
Definite favoritism
Penalty for not siding with site leader
Advice to Senior Management – Corporate office needs to pay attention to what is really happening at this site. Instead it takes the easy way out and turns it's back on the little guy. Achieving production numbers outweighs respect for employees. A change in management is needed. There are to many long-term employees in leadership roles that feel entitled. The company has slowly taken the quality of life from their production employees and it needs to give back. Employees are dissatisfied overall.

I have been working at Deluxe Corporation full-time for less than a year
Pros – - Colleagues genuinely care about their work
- Caring and satisfying our customers
- Diverse projects
- Virtual teams across many work sites
Cons – Rather than buyer beware...future applicant beware as they sell you a story about working for the company that isn't true. Instead you soon realize:
- ancient tools
- no training
- poor leadership as unable to set strategic direction especially in the online space
- no work/life balance as I thought that I was offered a fair pay, but once you consider the hours you work, the pay is terrible
- poor communications
Advice to Senior Management – Need to find strong leaders to set directions and start caring about employees.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation
Pros – 95 percent of the people that work at Deluxe are absolutely fantastic to work with. The problem is that the other 5 percent are in charge.
Cons – There is a revolving door. Many great people were let go because of constant schisms in upper and mid-level management. People that remain are severely overworked and are doing the job of several people.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation
Pros – Benefits and salary are great. On site cafeteria. Flexible work hours. Travel arrangements. Free checks for all employees. Co-workers are well-intentioned.
Cons – Leadership lacks experience in the industry the company provides products for (financial services). Inexperienced management and no effective coaching for those managers. No confidentiality between human resources and direct managers when there are issues. Product development process very poor for a process-oriented company. Company culture very unforgiving to outsiders. Average length of employment for Deluxer is 20 years so change is highly unlikely.
Advice to Senior Management – Not everyone is designed to immediately fit in to a closed culture. If you hire outside with the stated expectation to bring in fresh thinking and approaches then coach and hold your leadership team to that expectation. Establish a no tolerance policy for retaliation and breach of confidentiality between HR and management when employees notify HR of any issue. Not everything should have to be submitted through the compliance hotline to make senior leadership take this seriously.
