I have been working at Destination XL part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Been there almost two months as a GSA and genuinely enjoy the work. Some customers are annoying and my manager is a little racist but It's not a bad gig altogether.

    Cons

Some customers are a little extra and I was not given any kind of training as far as how to sell. It's really just a customer to customer kind of thing.

    Advice to Management

Aim a little higher as far as who you hire to run your higher volume stores, and you should pay them more because no one wants that job right now and I can see why.

    Pros

great coworkers and customers. Compost really serves a niche market and it's great to be able to help guys who otherwise cannot find clothes.

    Cons

where to start? Low commission that will not be raised. Low hourly wage that will also not be raised. Regional manager out of touch with employees and salespersons. Expected to work 4 hour shifts frequently. Not very family oriented. Benefits suck.

    Advice to Management

you are big on taking care of the customers but you need to be a bit better on taking care of your employees. We all have families and it's hard to stay with this company when I can barely afford to feed mine. You need to change the culture within your corporate structure to one that values its employees instead of simply seeing them as a means to an end.

    Pros

Great guest at times. Good standards. Best customer service, Unmatched in that department.

    Cons

Work life balance at management levels is not good. Upper Management only cares about making unrealistic goals.

    Advice to Management

Listen more and speak less. Spend time with your staff and learn their needs and likes!!!!!! they will stay.

    Pros

Decent salary as Store Manager Great customers

    Cons

Unorganized upper management right hand doesn't talk to the left. Be aware of bait and switch they will tell you one thing to get you hired and change policies once hired. Not clear of expectations and also are unrealistic the stores are not busy enough to produce certain metrics expectations. There is high turnover so you will always have different manager they call it restructure but it's an issue they are not trying to resolve. There is no trust in Store Managers from hiring their own staff, interviews and scheduling. If you want to have no work life balance or no consistency and love being micromanage this is the right place for you. There are always job opportunities because everyone is quitting or being fired this should be a red flag when applying. Do your homework compare Casual Male XL Glass door reviews to Destination XL the same complaints but yet management still isn't listening. Lack of ethics Their plan of hiring great people is not working great people get hired but they do nothing to retain the few great employees they have but they do a great job of causing employee dissatisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people at store level they have great ideas. Pay people what they are worth paying Key Holders 7.50 plus commission is horrible but you expect them to do the similar job as a Store Manager.

    Pros

The guest are incredible to work with and build long term relationships with. You are truly making the lives of guys with low self esteem better.

    Cons

If you are of color, this may not be the company for you. Upper management with this company obviously feels that black employees cannot cut it at the upper management level. Good enough to run successful stores but not good enough for the multi-unit level and up. Kinda reminds me of the days when the NFL had majority black players but no black QB's or Coaches. Run the ball but you're not intelligent enough to devise the play. They say metrics are what get you promoted while lower performing white employees are moved up the ladder. Black employees are starting to see the light and leave in large numbers.

    Advice to Management

Promote and give raises based on merit not the good old boy system. Race should not play a factor in giving an individual a promotion.

    Pros

There are a few very good locations to work at, for a few very good store managers. Power to negotiate your contract as an outside hire.

    Cons

"Your raise is on the wall, sell more." Driven sales environment where all training is geared to never leave the guests alone. This is obvious in our guests survey comments. I've worked at 6 different locations after being asked to help these stores get a pick up, and every move has been to "position me to get my own store faster". 4 yrs later, no store, and each years W2 has had less money than the year before. Done with it.

    Advice to Management

Trust in your staff, and allow them to read body language of the guests. These are grown men and do not need to be attacked at the front door. If you ask somebody to step up and take control, and they continue to do so...quite successfully...compensate them.
