Great on paper... tough on your moral

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at Devon Energy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsDecent flex benefits, beautiful building.

ConsMoral is painful. Reporting to an american side makes it a very difficult place to adjust to. As canadians, we have a different work culture that outperforms counterparts in the US without the use of fear or intimidation to manage people. (my way or the high way type attitude)

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Founder died, heir will retire and CEO has no clue on how to run the company

Business Analyst (Former Employee)

I worked at Devon Energy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat compensation package for you to travel and forget your annoying coworkers.

ConsLots of nepotism in a classicist driven environment. People DO get fired due to brown nose puppet masters.

Advice to Senior ManagementSell the company to anybody who is willing to do what used to do when you were a leading company and not the sap (pun intended) company you currently are.

Your "leadership" base is smartly fooling the vice presidents and the stock holders to their hearts contempt. Put some good auditing practices in place to avoid so many resources leaks.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Some departments great, others terrible

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at Devon Energy full-time

Pros- Able to purchase up to 2 weeks of holidays with flex dollars
- 6% pension, 2% stocks "gift", and 4% contribution match to savings plan is one of the best in the business

Cons- Totally disorganized implementation of SAP accounting system, still in shambles
- HR department not helpful with resolving issues
- Some really great younger talent that deserves to be promoted, but have to wait until someone quite or retires to get recognized
- Drilling and Completions departments have very low morale
- Once a good project gets identified Devon has a way of stepping in and over-complicating and over-managing it, thereby taking away the ownership from the workers

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a really good look at the people that you have managing the business - there are some great managers and some terrible ones. Listen to what employees have to say.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
