    I worked at Dillard's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Pay above average for retail. Friendly co-workers. I had a great department manager.

    Cons

Sales quotas can be stressful. Hours are ridiculous, I was supposed to be part time (I was a full time college student at the time) and by the end of my time there I was working 32-40 hours per week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider relaxing strict stance on sales quotas.

    I have been working at Dillard's full-time

    Pros

If you're going to work in retail, this is the company you want to work for. They start wages much higher than other retail companies. They reward genuinely hard-working people with raises and promotions (they also promote from within more than other companies). This company doesn't run on politics and promote whoever is tight with management. They promote successful people. My other favorite thing is that Dillard's doesn't make its employees work on Thanksgiving, and after working for them for a certain amount of time, you even get holiday pay for your birthday. I don't know any other retailers that give you a birthday present like that. Registers are very simple to use.

    Cons

Some locations are truly looking outdated. It doesn't look good to the clientele to have one store looking shiny and new with beautiful fixtures and another store to look sad and rundown with fixtures falling apart. Also, a lot of the computers are older than dirt. They invest a lot of time and energy into the money making departments like cosmetics and tend to forget about other departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'd like to see them invest in their older locations. A huge part of retail is visual presentation and new fixtures and some well constructed wall fixtures can make a huge difference. Also, I recommend a training program for visual managers. Update your systems into the 21st century. A new system can help avoid client issues.

    I worked at Dillard's full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay for retail. Quality products. Electronic scheduling. Bonuses and "spiffs." Product discounts. Not open as late as other major retail stores.

    Cons

Sales quotas. Not much flexibility in schedule (a lot of nights, weekends, holidays). Management cares more about sales than anything else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More flexible schedules, realistic quotas, reward good work, even if it didn't get a sale.

    I worked at Dillard's part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

They worked with me on my schedule to a point and gave me the option of part-time or full. The pay was better than most part-time jobs in the area. Do your job well, and they will reward you. Great discounts!

    Cons

Since you worked on commission, you had a lot of competition among the employees. You better be strong to withstand mean spirited employees and stand your ground with your customers. You have a goal that will be reviewed every month. You get moved among departments frequently, and the atmosphere is very high tension.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a better working environment for the employees. Too much pressure placed on employees to compete. I believe the customers are the ones that truly suffer because of this fact.

I worked there for about 6 months in the customer service department and enjoyed my time there. We were very busy during the holiday season wrapping gifts.
