I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great culture. Great benefits.

    Cons

Turnover is high and the restructuring of departments and management causes a very unsettling feeling in employees. Not enough time off for the quantity of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider less work so a 8-9 hour day is the norm, instead of 10-12. More vacation time should we awarded to those who consistently work long days. Over taxing staff causes burnout and mistakes.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - For a large company there is still an embrace of individuality that exists within Discovery
    - Work life balance depends on your manager (mine at the moment rocks!)
    - Pay is on the upper side of the scale
    - Perks and benefits are some of the strongest in the industry with good time off, sick, 401K, and medical
    - Strong telework opportunities
    - Opportunity to work with incredibly motivated, smart, engaged people
    - Easy access from Metro, MARC, and other public transport plus employee parking in the building
    - Lots of great nearby restaurants within easy walking distance (a 1 hour lunch actually feels like a 1 hour lunch)

    Cons

    - There are politics - what company doesn't have them.
    - Innovations started in one area will be quashed in another
    - Little synergy between the different groups
    - The quality of the manager / director that you get can be a crap shoot - some are good at what they do but their interpersonal skills are non-existent.
    - In some areas of Silver Spring you can definitely feel a sense of despair (counter to the energy you see in other places)
    - Some of their policies and practices lag behind the times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Remember what made Discovery great and get back to that
    - Value and support your employees, without them, you have no product, no content, nothing to sell to your customers and viewers
    - Value and support your viewers by offering them quality, engaging, and compelling content

    Pros

Great place to work for those with families. Hours are stable, people are great, environment positive.

    Cons

Too much politics, pay sucks if you've been there for a long time. If you get promoted, don't think you'll get a high raise, you'll probably get $3k if that.

Benefits, Days off, Salary, Training, Gym!

    Cons

None really. Commute depending on where you live.

Too many meetings and unwillingness to develop talent from within.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great Benefits, including great medical and dental plans, vacation time, sick days, personal days, paid maternity leave, yearly bonus(based on individual performance and company performance) and federal holidays (depending on the your position). Promotions are based on performance, and not seniority.

    Cons

Boring, easy work, but perhaps I am bias coming from a high adrenaline industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gather employee input before forcing new SOP that will end up being changed several times over before being finalized.

I have been working at Discovery Communications as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Discovery has been a great place to learn. The managers are very open to questions, give constant feedback and advice, and make you feel like part of the team.

You will not be fetching coffee for people. As an intern, you will be part of the team.

    Cons

The company is very vast, and there can be a daunting "breaking-in" period when it comes to the "who" and the "why". Internal politics can get complicated.

Discovery Channel, still operating like it's 1995

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some fantastic in house benefits: on-sight wellness center; free yoga and bootcamp, daycare, an inflatable shark attached to the building every couple of years...

    Cons

... but the benefits don't make up for the lousy pay (it's TV, who needs to pay rent?); the little to no likelihood of advancement unless you're already walking out the door; and a senior management that's still programming and promoting like it's 1995 and diversity isn't a necessary part of building a successful brand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire everybody. This management is so co-dependent and dysfunctional, a therapist would recommend a divorce. Running your networks based on fear is not going to inspire anyone to great heights.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This place is great to work at, the people, the culture, the benefits. In my time woking at Discovery, I have been provided with the training and tools to allow me to grow, as well as the motivation in yearly bonuses to stay committed to do better every year.

    Cons

You're never 100% happy with any job, but if I have to say that there's one thing I don't like about this company, it would have nothing to do with my job; I would like to get back the smart Discovery programming we used to have, and stop catering to the hillbilly audience. Again, that's just my own opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch Cosmos. Discovery should have done that, not NATGEO.
