I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This place is great to work at, the people, the culture, the benefits. In my time woking at Discovery, I have been provided with the training and tools to allow me to grow, as well as the motivation in yearly bonuses to stay committed to do better every year.

    Cons

You're never 100% happy with any job, but if I have to say that there's one thing I don't like about this company, it would have nothing to do with my job; I would like to get back the smart Discovery programming we used to have, and stop catering to the hillbilly audience. Again, that's just my own opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch Cosmos. Discovery should have done that, not NATGEO.

I have been working at Discovery Communications as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Culture is great. Easy to learn and move. The company truly invests in you if you make the investment in them. I have loved every minute at Discovery. Aton of career guidance and introductions are offered.

    Cons

Take advantage of everything offered as an intern. It seems like it is less accessible if you get hired full time regarding introductions and "special' treatment.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Discovery has great brands, most of which you can be proud to represent! The company is truly global, and there is a lot going on...everywhere. Benefits are strong, and the corporate culture is almost great.

    Cons

The company is almost great. Unfortunately, the gap between good and great doesn't seem to ever close. The emphasis on making it great for the employees will likely never be there as long as the financial results remain strong and people stay put. If it ain't broke...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider sharing the successes of the company with those who deliver the success. If not with money, with more complete programs that are actually supported by all levels.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Number one media company in the world. Work with the most creative people in the business. Company has outstanding benefits and great work environment. Always something fun going on. Great resume booster and where you work will always be a dinner party conversation topic.

    Cons

So many people want to work there and are willing to undercut on salary that the pay is significantly lower relative to what you can make at a less prestigious company. Pay isn't everything and it's a great place to work. Just don't expect to be jumping into a basement full of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck from DuckTales.

Great company to work for with wonderful work-life balance, however, not a lot of room for growth.

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work-life balance is great with awesome benefits. They have a great maternity program and offer quite a few extra programs (like exercise classes or seminars) at no cost to the employee.

    Cons

Not a lot of room for career growth. Job description does not reflect the position and we do not get credit for the work we are doing by senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review growth options for all employees

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Great perks
    - Good people
    - Relaxed environment in the research department (unlike ad sales)
    - Easy to take pride in the brand

    Cons

    - Feel like just a cog, very replaceable and undervalued
    - Low pay
    - Boring; management unresponsive when asked for more responsibility
    - I feel like my brain is rotting
    - Generally unorganized and no communication between teams and groups

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your new employees! They could be the ones to stay with the company and shape it in the future, but the turnover rate is so high...

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great work ethics. People have been there forever so it's like a big family. Nice people. Excellent benefits and pay. Beautiful offices. Great HR department.

    Cons

Very resistant to change. Extremely territorial. People work on silos. No synergies among departments. It's a company that does not believe/invest in digital. Old fashion way of thinking when it comes to original production. Limited growth opportunities. Could be frustrating if you come from an organization that values reinvention and change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop comparing against your own benchmarks. Start looking to other metrics, not only ratings.

    Pros

Good company and better-than-average benefits (though definitely, no Google or Facebook!)

    Cons

Hard to get your foot in the door
