Excellent team members hard to get good shifts

Attractions Magic KIngdom Space Mountain (Former Employee)
Orlando, FL

I worked at Disney Parks & Resorts full-time for more than a year

ProsWhen I started out it was very easy to trade shifts. I picked up over time during hours I wanted to work and positions I wanted to work.

ConsEHH online shift manager change that made it nearly impossible to pick up hours

Advice to Senior Managementlisten to union board and switch the ehh system back

Treats contractors like garbage

Data Management (Former Employee)
Lake Buena Vista, FL

I worked at Disney Parks & Resorts as a contractor for more than a year

ProsCo workers are usually a great group of people. Mutual respect makes a workday enjoyable.

ConsBecause of uncertainty of benefit obligations, Disney hires contractors to perform essential duties that should be career path to future leaders. Many qualified people that work beyond the abilities of permanent cast members are disposed of after 18 months.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management needs to involve themselves with the workers - to see how financial policies affect morale and productivity.

Internship program is an experience not a career path

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Disney Parks & Resorts as an intern

ProsGreat life experience, best place to learn customer service skills, and you get to interact with people from all over the world. It feels amazing to work for such an incredible company.

ConsLow pay and no time off.

Everyone goes to intern at Disney with this "dream" that it will turn into a career some day. Here's what you need to realize- This internship is meant to be a learning experience. Few will manage to turn it into a career. However, many become obsessed with the idea of following this dream and get stuck in the job. Before they know it they'll have been doing custodial work for minimum wage for 8 years. It's extremely difficult to work your way up in the organization unless you're willing to devote the next decade of your life moving at a snail's pace. The only career path worth pursing at the disney resorts is hospitality. Working in the resorts is a great place to start.

Tip- If you really want to work for Disney some day get experience else where. Then come back and reapply for your dream job when you have the skills.

WDPRO - Confused, disorganized business unit, social cliques, blatant favoritism. Stay away.

Product Manager (Former Employee)
Anaheim, CA

I worked at Disney Parks & Resorts full-time for more than a year

ProsFree park entry (for cast) + 3 guests, access to amazing/awesome people in the broader organization (if you seek them out), decent discounts on hotels and vacations.

ConsCheap, cheap cheap! Lowball salaries, wouldn't even provide water (much less snacks) during 3-day training in a building with no running water! Frequent reorganization. Culture of fear, CYA, avoiding responsibility, delaying, blaming/scapegoating. Incompetent management. All-day conference calls/meetings and impossible expectations. Very little opportunity for advancement. Some good people have remained stagnant (job and salary) for 5-10 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure out the plan before you communicate and make changes to the organization. Practice what you preach - not one member of management (nor 90% of employees) exhibits the core value of bravery. Obsession with process, 20+ stakeholders, 100% consensus, 3 managers for a single employee, wasted time with mandatory training/meetings, and incompetent middle management. Any new/different ideas are dismissed immediately. Good people are laid off/fired for not conforming. 60%+ of the organization are contractors, treated as inferior to cast. (I was a cast member, and felt ashamed at the treatment I observed.) Shame on you.

Sucked. But going to the parks for free was nice.

College Program - Quick Service Food and Beverage (Former Employee)
Orlando, FL

I worked at Disney Parks & Resorts as an intern for less than a year

ProsGoing to the parks for free
Discounts at Disney stores and hotels
Buddy pass for friends and family

ConsInflexible schedule
Getting yelled at every day by management for stuff that's not your fault
Poor and dangerous working conditions

Advice to Senior ManagementLive up to your values. If you want your front-line staff to treat guests with "Disney Level of Service", then you must treat staff the same way.
