Good for learning but management is appalling

    Consultant (Current Employee)
    Hemel Hempstead, England (UK)

ProsThere is a good scope of learning, co-workers are nice in general. You will learn across the business and different verticals (if working on head office).

ConsSenior management is appalling. They treat employees as liabilities! Following merger with Carphone Warehouse, they have made hundreds of people redundant (and hiring contractors instead to show a head-count reduction in accounts – to please city investors). In stores, staff turnover rate is very high (because they are paid minimum wage). The people who worked 15-20 years in head office were let go in favour of replacing them by fresh graduates in Czech Republic.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees with respect rather than continuously trying appease city investors!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Cool tech, but high staff turnaround due to unprofessionalism

    Sales Colleague (Current Employee)

    Pros-Great people
-Pay increase opportunities are easily obtained
    -Hands on with new tech

    Cons-Low expectation of promotion
-Pay increases although frequent, are miniscule
    -Huge pressure to sell warranties
-Huge pressure on "numbers" and fixing of customer sales
-Threat of termination of contract from managers at every level
-Culture of avoiding customers to fix numbers
-Snake oil merchants with products and policies
-After working with them for 6 months it is no wonder they are frequently on consumer advice shows
-The company is designed around trying to impress unseen and unheard shareholders, NOT the workers or public.
-Praise for good work is awful, the company has created a computer system where colleagues can send a "thank you" and "well done" message to each other.
There is no need for this and is seen by most staff as a replacement for basic human contact.

Advice to Senior ManagementPound note & margin sales are just as important (if not more) as playing the numbers game with Solution Quotient.
    Sales=margin=profit
Improvement of customer service needed, colleagues are expected to be trained in customer service, this is not true of all staff however.
There is no need to threaten colleagues with dismissal after missing only small targets.

    Dsg

    Category Manager (Former Employee)
    Hemel Hempstead, England (UK)

ProsDsg are a powerful company with certain categories often with over 50% market share. Former CEO was very strong implementing much needed change.

ConsAn environment exists in Dixon where those who have the ability to put the best spin on a situation were likely to do well. This was improving but still not enough focus on wider performance.

Getting Better, but a lot of work to do

    Supervisor (Former Employee)
    Leeds, England (UK)

ProsIf you are in the right store, with the right management team then it can be enjoyable. Otherwise, head office don't care too much about those on the ground.

ConsLots of mis-communication to the store staff from head office both from a sales target and merchandising point of view.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust the staff more, rather than worry about if they are going to do something bad.

    Not honest company

    Customer Advisor (Current Employee)
    Brno (Czech Republic)

ProsGood for students to get some experience, young environment, social events, decent salary for students.

ConsPromised benefits never paid, promised opportunities for further development never came true, some of the branches are purely recruiting only certain nationalities

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove! It doesn't matter that you are dealing mostly with students you should act as professionals.

Some good people, a lot of inefficiency and far too much politics

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Sheffield, England (UK)

ProsThe people are mercurial; I worked with some of the best people I have ever met in their fields. The senior leadership team talk to the people on the front line in terms of customer experience and doing the right thing.

ConsUnfortunately, far too many are average at best, and there's a lot of incompetence and lack of accountability. Despite talking a good game, with their customer plan, the focus is consistently on reducing cost base. During times of unprecedented sales demand, costs continue to be cut driving a poor customer experience and lost revenue.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider budgets beyond single fiscal years. You lose revenue through over promised cost base cuts, which means you cut into flesh rather than trimming fat.

Work long hours, pressure to perform

    IT Support (Current Employee)
    Hemel Hempstead, England (UK)

Pros10% discount at store. Can't think of anything else

ConsLong hours, no career progression prospect, continuous redundancies and managed out of business. Staff appreciated by higher management just another number. No training provided and people moved out of business due to small reasons. old building, equipment and awful IT support from India.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen you your staff and appreciate the hard work they do.

As a place to work it has deteriorated significantly i the last 3 years

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe salary levels are OK but there is not much else positive to say currently

ConsThe management style is brutal. There is zero consideration to your life/work balance.
Your views are neither invitied or respected. Team members are openly berrated infront of the rest of the staff. The working atmosphere is very poor. My advice? If you work there - get out!
If you are thinking about working there - don't!

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be less focus on clever systems, processes and fancy store layouts and more focus on getting the basics right: right product, right quanitiy at the right price in the right place at the right time.

dsg- pay you to do the work of a higher payband

    Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee)
    Falkirk, Scotland (UK)

ProsEasy to get positions, but may not be the most flexible around holidays. Good to work for if you want part time, and also not bothered about actually getting bonuses etc- most are not really available. The team in some stores can be great friends that you will always remember- in the lower turnover (i.e. good management) stores that is! If you know someone who works at one- ask them about the management- it can make alot of difference. I went through management changes and boy were new management digging a hole for themselves in the store as morale plummets!

ConsNo christmas/new year holidays allowed, plus not much flexibility if you want more hours over fewer days. Expect to possibly get 'done over' when it comes to overtime, good faith work, and also working at the higher position and getting it paid to you in back dated pay- just do not fall for it. Although At times it can be quite a good place to be.

Whatever you do, try to enjoy it, and remember you do not need to go in for their pushing- you have the ability to do things your way- your not paid by commission so serve the customer in your personal advantage.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind out about the ones at your store- your store managers make a would of difference. One store management team were superb- and it refelected in the customer service- most others are terrible
