I have been working at Dollar General full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They usually work around your schedule, Kids home and school

    Cons

there are a lot of double standards. Sometime SOP is followed the next week you don't have to follow SOP the only time you get a raise is when you are promoted into management. There are no evaluations unless you are in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, seems the only time there is anything done is when a manager sees the wrong. My manager was never held accountable for their actions

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The mission, if followed is a worthy cause but in practice there's a lot to be desired.

    Cons

Upper management, like regional directors, so not back the store managers. Have policies making mankind out to be a bunch of thieves and after the first few months of honeymoon period you feel as if you're being treated as suspect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train managers in stores similar to the one they'll take over or have training take place in that store after 5 days in a model store. Stop leaving store managers out to hang with no support.

I worked at Dollar General part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

lots of sku's and you get a small employee discount. Laid back atmosphere and the managers are fairly easy and not too pushy.

    Cons

Well with the pro's being not too pushy managers, let me elaborate. The store managers seem to come from all walks of life and none seem to have a real stable background as to corporate management skills. Some store the managers is yelling at the associates and at others it's whatever is just alright and you can work at your own pace. No wonder you can open a newspaper or click on the internet and constantly see that Dollar General is looking to hire store and assistant managers. The turn over rate is the highest I have EVER seen with a retail company. Not to mention the hours are long and the pay is definitely below average standards. You can work there if you want but after 6 months of topsy turvy,I couldn't take anymore and you won't either. You have been warned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do some actual sit down interviews and some REAL screening of who you are hiring to represent your stores, some of these people surely must have come from a traveling circus show somewhere.

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a good place to start and move up, but tops out quick.

    Cons

Low labor hours and if you are on salary you will be pressured to work unpaid ot.
Company does not understand the needs of the store on the ground,
Upper management changes every six months and so do the priorities.
Do not expect any help with your shrink. Any theft is blamed on employees and external is never acknowledged.
Don't count on that shrink bonus.
"Serving others" means paying them as little as possible and driving them as hard as possible. No respect for human beings.
Turnover is high at all levels. SM's have a 60% turnover rate in my region.
If you are brand new you will be dumped into a dirty broken store and will be lucky if you receive any help.
Pay is the lowest for any retail I have seen. Family Dollar and Dollar Tree pay better

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start treating people with respect. Instead of another convoluted ad campaign try a banner that says "We pay a living wage" and raise prices by a penny. Give your store managers a voice we are the most important people in the company.

    Pros

If you stay and take the abuse you might move up to management. Most are hiring

    Cons

Even managers are not respected in Dollar General. You will not want to remain with the company and employee turn over rate is high

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep options open and dont stress out

I have been working at Dollar General part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Meet new people and make friends.

    Cons

Only two workers there during the afternoon/night shift. Mainly females.

Expected to recover, clean, cashier, and take customers where they need to be while not leaving the front of the store.

    Restrooms are always locked.

    Price stickers are constantly wrong.

    Shelves are crooked.

Manager hates getting on the register, doesn't work any night shifts, and complains about recovery not being done right, but refuses to do it theirselves.

The pay isn't worth the stress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help your workers and do not procrastinate.

    Cons

    Managers without management training.
    Managers don't support their staff.
    District manager showing favoritism.
Managers lie to arrest people that could not honestly be identified as the thief.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers need adequate training and team management.skills.

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benifits if you are a manager are decent. Vacation is awesome if your not a store manager.

    Cons

Cant use vacation, understaffed, not enough payroll. When i do use my vaca its to give extra hours for my workers. But i dont get a day off

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are more likely to work harder when they have a day off.. more so store managers.
