I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company, one of the best at what they do. Encourage you to network within the company and provide you with a mentor. You can climb the ladder if you impress the right people- don't think it's based on skill. Will set you up for a great career when you leave, which you will.

    Cons

Horrible locations. HQ is in Midland, MI- middle of nowhere religious small town. Absolutely nothing to offer. Expect to die alone if you're single, and if you're not, your spouse won't be able to find a job and will leave anyways. Think hard about what the price of your career is.

    Advice to Management

Move the HQ to Freeport, or anywhere but Midland. Look at all employees on an even playing field.

I worked at Dow Chemical as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

There is nothing good to say

    Cons

Cut throats. Treat people (contractor) like dogs. They have no appreciation for hard workers. Even feel threatened by them.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company allows employees to set their own (reasonable) hours which was great for helping to create a good work/life balance. The pay and benefit packages are decent also.

    Cons

Pretty much everything about Dow is terrible. Management does not provide all individuals the same opportunity to succeed, rather they set some people up to do really well and stop others from being able to perform well. The training program is lacking at best which sets people up to fail. Rate and advance people based on how they are individually not compared to their peers. The current method for performance review sets people up to fail. too much middle management allows for lower level people to become lost and stuck career wise. treat ALL people with respect. too much compeition between the various project/group leaders which leads to competition and pettiness rather than a cohesive team unit.

    Advice to Management

get rid of the separate track system that divides employees rather than unifying them, respect ALL employees equally for what they can bring to the table, allow ALL employees equal access to career development opportunities rather than just the FS/FL's. If someone asks for more responsibilities and opportunities don't shun them. the rating system is terrible for Technologist/Admins.

    Pros

Used to be a good place to be, now a good place to be from.

    Cons

Doesn't care about hourly employees, too much lip service

    Advice to Management

    Get a clue

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very safe company and decent benefits.

    Cons

Worst pay on the coast, benefits not on par with similar companies. Habe to have a procedure to do everything, almost to the point of using the bathroom. Treated like children by staff and supervision.

    Advice to Management

Stop bird dogging. Let the employees work and stop the incessant "let's fix it until it's broken" route that is practiced plant wide at Dow.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time

    Pros

Continued training, lasting friendships, safe working environment

    Cons

No room for advancing, constantly transferred to other jobs, lack of adequate training for job, not valued by supervision, treated like cattle & replaceable

    Advice to Management

The only opportunity or value is placed on white collar workers. Laborers should be appreciated & not continually worried about keeping their job due to being hurt & threatened to keep quiet. Lost a lot of friends & good workers due to made up reasons. I would suggest keep your workers instead of paying wrongful termination payoffs.

I have been working at Dow Chemical as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is competitive, but being a contractor is not - no benefits, bonuses, etc. Although Kelly rep will lie to you...

    Cons

Potential dangers working in plant. Too much idle time - leaves too much room for non-work activities: surfing the Internet, facebook, and gossiping. Employees are SAP illiterate!!

    Advice to Management

Have a training plan rather than letting new employee suffer through watching someone else while they go through their day. Kelly Services is a nightmare to work with - Dow really should take a priority in knowing what Kelly Services is really doing...

    Pros

A great exposure to learning about chemicals and what they are used for. It was very insightful and educational as well and had a great time working for them. I like the different options on what shift you wanted to work. The opportunities are endless once you are brought on permanently.

    Cons

Communication is not the greatest and this is a problem that if not corrected will cause bigger problems in the future. Sometimes they find stupid excuses for getting rid of people and that's not right. Another problem is that the LT's and trainers don't communicate well with the contract workers, they go straight to the Kelly on site manager and that's not professional at all. If you are not gonna hire people on permanent or that it's not a temp to hire, please make that clear in the beginning so people don't get their hopes up thinking they will be hired on permanently. Some two faced people there that will snitch just to make themselves feel good so that they can be on the good side of LT and management, even if it is not the truth.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with the contract workers and let them know that they will not be hired on permanently no matter how long they stay on. Don't blame the contract workers if they leave the assignment when something better comes along as thy want something permanent and reliable. Don't have such high expectations on the contract workers, tends to scare people away.

    Pros

If you have a Ph.D., you will make a lot of money. If you have a Ph.D and sell your soul to be a "People Leader", you will make sickening amounts of money.

    Cons

If you don't have a Ph.D or aren't willing to kiss butt, you will top out and be miserable.

I worked at Dow Chemical full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Big company, gets away with a lot. Good people at the mid to lower levels. On commercial side you get to go to big events on the corporate card.

    Cons

CEO is a bozo. No credibility. Strategy is incoherent. Shuffles leaders, managers, and presidents every 6-12 months. Nobody ever challenges him or they are gone. Sponsor the olympics for 10 years??? YOU ARE A CHEMICAL COMPANY NOT A CONSUMER FOCUSED COMPANY. What a waste of time and $$$ Again shareholder devalue. His #2 sitting in Europe is a waste of $$ to shareholders and has never done anything to create value. No respect for women in the executive wing. Awesome women who challenged Euro weenie were shown the door. The CEO was called the worst CEO ever by Mad Money and put on the wall of shame. CEOs went nuts and put a big $ push to all his CEO cronies to get that taken down. AND THYE DID! That should say it all. Also, look at the lawsuit by the female compliance officer First, decried here. and now, try to settle. Another waste of shareholder $$.

    Advice to Management

Fire Sir Evil. Replace the entire Board of Directors (totally stuffed with cronies and people who clearly don't care about the company (they care about their $$$ and their use of the corporate jets). Develop a real strategy. Then get rid of the clueless "leaders" who have done nothing but drink the cool aid and bob their heads.'
