I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Solid scientific base, good technology in many areas. Interesting problems to work on. Good equipment albeit some of it is rapidly getting obsolete.

    Cons

Politics gets pretty bad; ranking process may be unfair. Marketing and sales are often lagging behind the competition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Judge people based on the results of their work, promote on merit. Think long term, act quickly.

I have been working at Dow Chemical as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Better than being unemployed, they have been really good about accommodating my often erratic scheduling needs, people are basically good people with a few exceptions.

    Cons

Pay isn't awesome, super cheap company, no chance for advancement if you aren't a superstar already or know somebody, and conversely, there are some superstars that are obviously ONLY there for who they know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the temps already. Give temps a chance to come on board and reap some of the reward for being an actual employee. Kind of stinks working at a temp for years with no 401k, sick days, etc. Not necessarily conducive to employee loyalty nor to them wanting to do their best for you.

I worked at Dow Chemical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very Technical environment with a lot of experts in various fields of disciplines. Good learning Platform for new hires who want to become competent in any given role.

    Cons

Too structured, managers are focused on their on ascension and focus less on employee growth. Pay is below average for a big company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on a less structured hierarchical environment and focus on building networks. Also allow flexibility for employees to grow

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to grow your career within a company. Good work life balance with a focus on the family not just the individual. Good pay with good benefits.

    Cons

There is a bit of disconnect between maintanence and operations due to one being union and one not. Work process put in place is not always follwed so jobs become over due and over budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to invest in the employees. Also keep having events at the plat so that more individuals can participate. Work on a solution to the Work Process issues.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are somewhat comparable to other companies. The flexibility in which job function you do is a pleasant feeling because if you begin to tire of the particular field you are in you are free to look for other jobs within the company. They do want you to be comfortable with your job and try to help you succed.

    Cons

Depending on your job function there may not be much help from management as upper supervision is not always knowledgeable of the department they manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should require that in order to become a leader of a department, that person should not only have management experience but also be knowledgeable of the field in which they manage.
