I have been working at Dow Chemical

    Pros

R&D perspective: many very cool projects from short term to long term. Ability to be "deep and narrow" or "shallow and wide" depending on your area. Major focus on safety that came from manufacturing and the lab but has expanded to all areas. Time off policies are pretty flexible.Generally no time clock, or even monitoring of vacation days (which means many people don't take all of their vacation days).

    Cons

Standard big company issues - very process-oriented. Easy to hit salary cap if you can't make the jump to the next promotion level. Your experience will definitely vary depending on your position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maximum salary caps at each promotional level need to rise more dramatically./

    Pros

Good $$$ if you can put up with the pettiness of certain employees and the bullying of others.

    Cons

Management does not like recommendations for change unless it is their own agenda item. MOC's Management of Changes are recommended for every procedure but there is no follow up to make sure employees are following said MOC's/

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your employees. If you have one employee on your team that is a terror for the remainder - LISTEN - send that bully to some kind of Ethical Training and follow thru with making sure she/he is on probation for 90 days and ask the team if there has been improvement. If yes - great! If no - TERMINATION. Better to please the many who make you look good than satisfy the whims of the tyrannical bully. Manager....you are no better than your team.. (Or bully)

    Pros

Great place to gain experience....the people I worked with were great. Starting salary is great if you are an inexperienced person straight out of college.

    Cons

The salary is not so great if you are making a career change. I took a pay cut to work here, and it will be at least 3 years to make what I was making before....with that said, this company has one thing my last one didn't.....job security...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know that management can't do much as far as pay goes..but they can relay the information. Beware Dow, if you can't offer competitive pay then rest assured your people will leave for higher wages, so please, your a great place to work just need to pay more.

Great Benefits for past employees, wonderful co-workers - Unreal work loads, questionable management

    I worked at Dow Chemical

    Pros

Great opportunities to learn new skills..if you show enthusiasm, play by the rules and willing to work exhaustive hours and provide the company with real dollar returns, you will be rewarded with even more opportunities to try new skills, more work, higher expectations. How much energy do you have? You will require all of it to maintain your job for an entire career. Co-workers were great, a lot of collaboration across departments. High emphasis on safety

    Cons

They want all of your life. Don't even think about work life balance. Back in the day, benefits were much better and worth sticking it out but there's no guarantee of that happening. Restructurings happen every 3 - 5 yrs. The new 'pension' plan adopted in 2008 accrues imaginary points (not dollars) that will be valued... later.
Projects were often fast tracked to the point of failure.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

"Trial by fire" lets you see and do a lot of things, gaining the knowledge and respect you need to be effective at the role. There is a lot to do, but there is freedom to chose more interesting projects as they come up.

    Cons

"Trial by fire" means work-life balance can be impossible. When a few weeks of extra unpaid, uncommensated over time turns into a few months, it can wear on you and SOs. Training is mostly internet-based. Peer help is limited because no one seems to have time to teach or discuss. Timelines are not realistic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Walk the walk.

I worked at Dow Chemical full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great employees who like each other and try to help and look out for each other

    Cons

Management has their own agenda, make money at all cost. Do not care about employees. If management is questioned about something or put in an awkward position or called out they get mad and fire employee. Moral of working employees low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. While you are sitting in your office or in a meeting the real people are doing the work out in the field

I have been working at Dow Chemical as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Better than being unemployed, they have been really good about accommodating my often erratic scheduling needs, people are basically good people with a few exceptions.

    Cons

Pay isn't awesome, super cheap company, no chance for advancement if you aren't a superstar already or know somebody, and conversely, there are some superstars that are obviously ONLY there for who they know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the temps already. Give temps a chance to come on board and reap some of the reward for being an actual employee. Kind of stinks working at a temp for years with no 401k, sick days, etc. Not necessarily conducive to employee loyalty nor to them wanting to do their best for you.
